About

JIMMY CLIFF IN CONCERT:

Before there was Bob Marley there was Jimmy Cliff, the reggae pioneer widely credited with breaking the genre into the mainstream with his acting and soundtrack contributions to the classic 1972 Jamaican film The Harder They Come.  More than four decades  later Cliff continues to be at the genre's vanguard, taking home the Best Reggae Album Grammy in 2013 for Rebirth, his first new album in eight years. Whether he's lending his iconic high tenor to protest songs like "Vietnam" or inciting sing-alongs with his beloved cover of Cat Stevens' "Wild World," Cliff never fails to electrify audiences with his authentic performances, and his upcoming tour dates will be no exception.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Jamaican-born Jimmy Cliff began writing songs while still in primary school, scoring his first hit at just 14 with local favorite "Hurricane Hattie." After releasing several more regional hits in the early '60s, Cliff hit the big time with his 1968 international debut LP Hard Road to Travel. His reputation received another boost in 1972 with his starring role in Jamaican film classic The Harder They Come, which introduced global audiences to reggae via his iconic soundtrack contributions. Over his long and storied career, Cliff has released more than 30 albums and received numerous awards and honors, including induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2013, his album Rebirth received a Grammy award for Best Reggae Album, cementing his place as one of the genre's living legends and paving the way for continued touring.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Jimmy took the audience through a complete retrospective of his career, from before The Harder They Come up to the present, and the audience was really appreciative, bringing him back for 3 encores"

    First Reggae Concert

by rockcanyon on 7/23/14Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

This was my first Reggae concert. Jimmy Cliff was the headliner. I never heard Jimmy Cliff's music before the concert and to be frank, I am not sure if I like Jimmy's style of Reggae. I listened to a few of his songs and 30 minutes prior to when the concert was suppose to end, I left early. However, the opening act Don Carlo was great and Shaggy was okay. Shaggy performed a medley of his hits such as Boombastic but Shaggy spent to much time telling the audience to get on their feet and let's party. Just sing. If it wasn't for Don Carlo, the concert would have been a bust.

Thank you, Jimmy Cliff and Don Carlos!

    by Camila28 on 7/23/14Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Jimmy Cliff was amazing, and so was Don Carlos, as usual. Shaggy was a clown and barely played any of his own music. He didn't fit in this concert, which is why I rated it 4 stars overall.

Jimmy Cliff is an absolute master of his craft!

by MariachiReggae on 7/23/14Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

One of the best shows yet. Jimmy Cliff's voice was very soulful and the band had a clear tight sound. The Homina Homina Kid (Shaggy), and Don Carlos were great too.

by JohnRobbieTheCat on 7/22/14The Fillmore - San Francisco

66 years old and the guy rocked close to two hour set with no breaks. Super high energy and great set list. Mostly the classics with a few great ones off his new album. So glad I got to see this reggae legend.

The show was great! Jimmy Cliff has amazing energy for a 67 year old! He kept the audience on their feet singing, dancing and clapping for almost the entire show! Many Rivers to Cross gave me goosebumps and brought tears to my eyes! He still has an incredible voice!

    Jimmy Cliff is an allstar

    by ticketmastersucks123 on 7/21/14Montalvo - Saratoga

Jimmy Cliff is epic. The show was great - he has tons of energy. The show was maybe a little over produced - I would like to see a little more gritty and more roots - had a more modern vs old school reggae feel. If you have never seen him before I would I highly recommend.

    Gimme Jimmy!

by MusicNevahStop on 7/21/14Montalvo - Saratoga

My 12 year old son, who loves Bob Marley, was excited to see Jimmy Cliff. I saw Marley on his last tour in Oakland, it was the highlight of my life, and I saw Peter Tosh in SF too. But I was not expecting that much from an aging Cliff, just a run-through of his old songs. I couldn't have been more wrong. Jimmy proved to be both ageless and timeless as he hit the ground running and never let up. It wasn't just a retrospective, it was a reggae history lesson. He started with the early sounds AND moves ("ska"), went on to play some of his bigger hits ("rock steady") like I've never heard them, songs from "The Harder They Come" and then a "memorial" song from "Uncle Bob" ("We are just playing around..." he says, to be clear that he's not trying to be Bob or take credit for him, although someone with a bigger ego could have.) Few realize that Jimmy was the original reggae trailblazer, that he actually launched the careers of Desmond Dekker and Bob Marley, but he was very humble about that even when mentioning it in his retrospective/history. He also played his smash hits "Reggae Nights" and "Hakuna Matata" from the Lion King. He was all over the stage the entire show, really put out to keep the crowd engaged, and we left feeling as though we had witnessed a true legend of international proportions, enroute to his European tour. If you like reggae, check out the original King while you still can: Jimmy Cliff.

    Jimmy Cliff at Saratoga

by Georgesboy on 7/21/14Montalvo - Saratoga

Jimmy Cliff is one of the all time great performers and songwriters in the history of Jamaican music. He gave a great concert. He moved very well for a man of his age and his voice was as strong as ever.

    Jimmy Cliff - Awesome show!

by BobbyP60 on 10/6/13House of Blues Boston - Boston

I've been a fan for years, and this is the first time I saw Jimmy Cliff live. Awesome show, high energy and the crowd was really with Jimmy the entire time. Thrilled to have been there. House of Blues is a great venue in Boston for music. On the floor, ten feet from the stage.

    Jimmy Cliff - Legend

by Jessielew on 10/2/13Webster Hall - New York

Great venue to see a great man who has still got the voice even in his later years! We were in the Big Apple on a 50th Birthday trip for my hubby and was given the tickets as a surprise by our kids - it was definitely one of the highlights of our trip.
