About

JIMMY CLIFF IN CONCERT:

Before there was Bob Marley there was Jimmy Cliff, the reggae pioneer widely credited with breaking the genre into the mainstream with his acting and soundtrack contributions to the classic 1972 Jamaican film The Harder They Come.  More than four decades  later Cliff continues to be at the genre's vanguard, taking home the Best Reggae Album Grammy in 2013 for Rebirth, his first new album in eight years. Whether he's lending his iconic high tenor to protest songs like "Vietnam" or inciting sing-alongs with his beloved cover of Cat Stevens' "Wild World," Cliff never fails to electrify audiences with his authentic performances, and his upcoming tour dates will be no exception.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Jamaican-born Jimmy Cliff began writing songs while still in primary school, scoring his first hit at just 14 with local favorite "Hurricane Hattie." After releasing several more regional hits in the early '60s, Cliff hit the big time with his 1968 international debut LP Hard Road to Travel. His reputation received another boost in 1972 with his starring role in Jamaican film classic The Harder They Come, which introduced global audiences to reggae via his iconic soundtrack contributions. Over his long and storied career, Cliff has released more than 30 albums and received numerous awards and honors, including induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2013, his album Rebirth received a Grammy award for Best Reggae Album, cementing his place as one of the genre's living legends and paving the way for continued touring.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"The show was fantastic! Jimmy Cliff just doesn't stop! He and the band had so much energy, and he told so many great stories, it was an amazing experience!"

"Jimmy hasn't lost a step! He did several encores, danced around the stage and offered his gracious love and compassion as the audience totally embraced him."

"Jimmy took the audience through a complete retrospective of his career, from before The Harder They Come up to the present, and the audience was really appreciative, bringing him back for 3 encores"

    Jimmy Cliff: in the groove

by Pizzadave on 7/31/10Oregon Zoo - Portland

A very nice, solid set had everyone standing and rocking. The zoo's new beverage (beer/wine) concession set-up made for long, slow lines. Not so good.

    Jimmy Cliff was Unbelivable!

by nikiid on 7/27/10Oregon Zoo - Portland

The Jimmy Cliff concert was an absolutely amazing concert. It had been a very long time since Jimmy had last visited Portland and the welcome he recieved showed it! 3 encores was not enough for the crowd at the Zoo concert and the age group from 3 to 93. The concert started off with a bright young artist Trevor Hill. Having never heard of him I was very impressed. He was really good and the 2 piece backing band never missed a beat. For a 3 piece group I thought I was listening to a 6 piece group. It was a really nice blend of reggae, rock and alternative and enjoyed by all!! Rock and Reggae on Trevor Hill. Jimmy was in stellar shape and performance. He pranced and danced around on stage like a young rastafarian and sang all the great hits and added new ones. In particular was his song about "Afganistan" and how it was becoming another Vietnam! The crowd went wild when he sang "Harder They Come:" and the show was so exciting and just fun. His backing band was extremely young and very talented and they surprised everyone with a nice african drumming towards the end. This was truly a 5 star show and one you should not have missed

    Jimmy Cliff tru Rasta!

by ladywizz on 7/26/10Oregon Zoo - Portland

The phone survey took away from the introduction and ahhh of the birds that were flying overhead. Maybe doing this before the introduction or inbetween the first act and the second

    Jimmy Cliff

by CLBPDX on 7/25/10Oregon Zoo - Portland

It was a great show! The warm-up act was v good (Trevor Hall) and set a great tone for the show. Jimmy's band was very tight and had a relaxed feel to them. Jimmy was high energy and sent out a great vibe! He wore these fabulous gold shoes and danced, along with us, for 90+ minutes. Would recommend this concert to everyone. We saw it outside on a warm summer night and it was a fabulous setting for the show.

I could have danced all night! Jimmy Cliff rocks!

    by thoreau88 on 7/25/10Oregon Zoo - Portland

Almost no one could sit down the whole time. Even us old fogies. If he can still move like that, at his age, we ought to still be able to boogie for a couple of hours!

What a great concert! Jimmy and his 9 piece band were high energy reggae. Jimmy sang great and showed some awesome dance moves as well. "By the Rivers of Babylon" was incredible with fantastic drumming. He shared his love of planet Earth and the people of Earth with the audience. What a great show!

    Oh what a night!

by Allythejamaican on 7/24/10Oregon Zoo - Portland

What can I say... I had an awesome night. As a Jamaican living in Portland, it is a rare treat to actually go to a Jamaican concert. I was never a huge fan of all types of reggae whilst living in Jamaica-but I had my favorites- Jimmy Cliff being one of them. It was actually my first time seeing him live, and what an experience it was. He is the consummate performer, and I loved the fact that he sang all his classics. I will definitely be looking out for Jimmy Cliff concerts again, hopefully he will return to Oregon soon. Oh what nostalgia. After the opening act where I was standing in the back, I headed up to the front by the stage so I could really get in the groove. I was not disappointed. The entire crowd was on their feet, and when it was over, I, we all wanted more.... People clearly love this man and his message.

    Jimmy Cliff for all ages

by Cherifell on 7/24/10Oregon Zoo - Portland

FUN! The mini bird show was a nice distraction from the sun. The 3 man band opener was REALLY good. We took mom (see pic) & even she liked it. It was her first concert and she'd never heard reggea before. I think it put her at ease to see the young families enjoying the great music of Jimmy Cliff and singing along. For those who are first timers to zoo concerts I recommend arriving by 4pm so you can sit under the trees in the highest tear or to the extreme left so you can catch some shade up front and so you don't just see jiggling derrieres the whole concert!

    Dead on Departure

by dmbones on 7/24/10Oregon Zoo - Portland

Jimmy Cliff killed thousands in a bloodless foray at the Portland Zoo concert. I come to sing as much as I can get away with, but Jimmy's unique and wonderful voice outdid all us crooners. Before the show was half over, I'd nearly lost my voice trying to respond in kind to this incredible singer. He continued to encourage each in the singing crowd to give it up, only to effortlessly glide on top of all our best call and response. I went away hoarse, but Jimmy was still as clear as a bell by show's end. Surrounding the music was Jimmy's innate mysticism, a combination of personal revelation and voodoo tradition, that lent a feeling of being in the presence of a connection to something big and bright.

    Incredible energy

by cronegirl on 7/24/10Oregon Zoo - Portland

This was a wonderful show on a beautiful day...Jimmy Cliff still putting on a vibrant show...with lots of energy as well as promoting peace and care for our planet. The man has still 'got it' and surprised me how much he's still got it. A lot of that era's artists are still good but their energies are not as high with age...he just made the smiles and good stuff keep coming...many rivers to cross...yes...thank jah...and all the powers that be...happy night!
