We went to this Songwriters Showcase mainly to see John Ford Coley, since I had loved his and Dan Seals' music since the '70's. I didn't even really pay attention to who else would be playing with him. We were wonderfully surprised by the music of Byron Hill and Will Nance -- we had not seen/heard them before and both are very talented musicians, singers, and songwriters. John Ford Coley was great and sang many of the hits that he wrote or co-wrote and he and Dan had recorded together. He ended his part of the show with Todd Rundgren's "Light of the World", a great favorite for many of us. Jim Parker was his usual insufferable self, and, of course, we had to listen to the thousandth rendition of that godforsaken "Chicken Truck" song he co-wrote with John Anderson. The other songs he sang we had not heard before, however, and were for the most part tolerable.
(We greatly appreciate Jim's hosting the showcases but wish he would not perform every single month, thereby making room for another songwriter (besides himself) to perform and introducing us to more of these talented folks who we may or may not already be familiar with, as well as sparing us from listening to him sing time after time. His voice ain't that great!). The opening "songwriter"/performer, Don Gallardo, was awful. His songs were boring and not well-written, his guitar work bland, and his voice only mediocre. Usually the opening acts are local musicians, but most of the ones we have seen in the past have been far superior to this guy.
