    We thoroughly enjoyed the show

by foreversasfarasillgo on 1/6/13Von Braun Center Playhouse - Huntsville

Wynn Varble, Deborah Allen, Aaron Barker... It was a show full of amazingly talented songwriters. I always love to see these songwriter showcases for the intimate setting and hearing the stories behind our favorite hits. This show did not disappoint. We thoroughly enjoyed it and are looking forward to many more..

This was my 7th or 8th Songwriter showcase. The talent assembled at these shows is always amazing. That these shows aren't sold out every time amazes me, if people only knew what they were missing. I've NEVER been disappointed . Always good variety, at the shows, and from show to show. I'll go to every one my work schedule allows.

We've been to a number of these events and this one was as good as it gets! Roxie was a hoot and John Ford Coley [without England Dan] was great. Took me back to the 70's. Byron was very good and it was fun to hear some tunes I hadn't heard before, and of course Jim "chicken truck" Parker always lends his special picking and singing to a delightful evening. Prices of food and drink are very reasonable.

This is the second time I attended a Jim Parkers Songwriters Series at the Playhouse and enjoyed this casual event both times. I'll be back in 2012 for more.

    Best one yet!

by Tuffyb on 9/6/11Von Braun Center Playhouse - Huntsville

This show was the best Songwriters Showcase we have been to yet and we've been attending these for quite a few years. I was so thrilled to see Marshall Chapman again after 33 years (I last saw her at the Univ. of Tenn. in about 1978, when she was just beginning her music career). She looks and sounds better than she did as a younger woman and her ruminations and songs are still as delightful as ever. I am so happy for her success as a musician and writer. (The woman must know everybody in the music business!) This was our introduction to Matraca Berg, who has a voice as beautiful as she is and writes shockingly insightful and intelligent lyrics. Tommy Womack is an original and entertaining performer. Jim Parker reduced the number of songs he played and sang (although we did of course have to listen to another rendition of the unfortunate "Chicken Truck") and allowed some young performers to showcase their talents, which we thought was very generous of him, and we enjoyed hearing them sing.

    Amazing songwriters and musicians

by Anonymous on 5/9/11Von Braun Center Playhouse - Huntsville

I took my wife to this show for her birthday after hearing great things about it from some coworkers. We had a wonderful time. The audience is relatively small, so it's quite intimate. All the songwriters/musicians were so good. I loved hearing the stories behind the songs they wrote. I highly recommend anyone who loves music to go to one of these shows. I know we will certainly be attending another one soon.

Up close and personal by so much talent is a fantastic way to go. It was fun and and enjoyable to hear the stories but also to hear the songs.

    Mostly Brilliant

by Tuffyb on 1/9/11Von Braun Center Playhouse - Huntsville

We went to this Songwriters Showcase mainly to see John Ford Coley, since I had loved his and Dan Seals' music since the '70's. I didn't even really pay attention to who else would be playing with him. We were wonderfully surprised by the music of Byron Hill and Will Nance -- we had not seen/heard them before and both are very talented musicians, singers, and songwriters. John Ford Coley was great and sang many of the hits that he wrote or co-wrote and he and Dan had recorded together. He ended his part of the show with Todd Rundgren's "Light of the World", a great favorite for many of us. Jim Parker was his usual insufferable self, and, of course, we had to listen to the thousandth rendition of that godforsaken "Chicken Truck" song he co-wrote with John Anderson. The other songs he sang we had not heard before, however, and were for the most part tolerable. (We greatly appreciate Jim's hosting the showcases but wish he would not perform every single month, thereby making room for another songwriter (besides himself) to perform and introducing us to more of these talented folks who we may or may not already be familiar with, as well as sparing us from listening to him sing time after time. His voice ain't that great!). The opening "songwriter"/performer, Don Gallardo, was awful. His songs were boring and not well-written, his guitar work bland, and his voice only mediocre. Usually the opening acts are local musicians, but most of the ones we have seen in the past have been far superior to this guy.
