Jethro Tull on Tour

Ian Anderson — Jethro Tull's flautist, vocalist and guitarist — leads the band's live shows. With bold charisma, he pairs his instrumental work with mesmerizing, full-bodied dance moves that match the band's dramatic musical intricacies. Anderson's bandmates also ably channel the emotional arcs of Jethro Tull's arrangements, creating a concert experience that can feel like a lot like a theater production. The band toured heavily for decades after forming in 1968, appearing at high-profile events such as the Isle of Wight Festival, and became known for elaborate stage setups and costumes. In 2018, Anderson celebrated the band's half-century existence with a tour dubbed 50 Years of Jethro Tull.

Jethro Tull in Concert

The legendary prog band played their first concert in London at the iconic Marquee Club on February 2, 1968. The gig was a long time coming: Prior to cofounding the group, Anderson had been performing with several other acts, including the John Evan Band. However, once his fledgling group's booking agency suggested the name Jethro Tull — in reference to a real-life English agriculturist — the band was off to the races.

Chart and sales success came early and often. Jethro Tull's second album, 1969's Stand Up, hit No. 1 in the UK and was certified gold, while 1971's landmark Aqualung went triple-platinum and 1972's Thick as a Brick topped the U.S. charts. As their career progressed, the band evolved along with musical trends and embraced styles such as hard rock, synth-rock and metal (in addition to the usual mix of folk, blues and rock). That penchant for progress also paid off: In 1988, Jethro Tull won the inaugural Hard Rock/Metal Grammy Award, and the 1987 album Crest of a Knave won Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance Vocal or Instrumental. Recent years have seen the release of archival live albums and hits collections, both of which illuminate the band's deep catalog.

Not bad for an Old Fart

by Tinkman on 6/5/10Mizner Park Amphitheater - Boca Raton

Incredible! The band, sound and performance was excellent. Far better then expected. Anderson performed as he did 30 years ago. Was disappointed he did not do Thick as a Brick (cut version) but played a great selection up to the curfew. Great venue.

    Jethro Tull 41 years on..

by IanJ on 6/5/10Mizner Park Amphitheater - Boca Raton

First saw them in 69 in Leicester, England. Ian Anderson still has that wicked grin on his face, and Martin Barre still plays great guitar. Great venue - not too big, and nobody cared when it rained a bit as it was over 80 degrees. All the great tunes from Stand Up and Aqualung plus some folk rock from Tales from the Wood. Fabulous music night. Turned around to see the Iron Maiden band members sitting behind me! They had been rehearsing locally for their US tour starting next week, and decided to come out to see the Tull. Very nice, down to earth guys.

JETHRO TULL RULES... AND ROCKS ON

by hojo22 on 6/5/10Mizner Park Amphitheater - Boca Raton

This was an awesome show. Both Ian's were amazing. A true flashback.. Ian Anderson has not lost a bit of his craft since the late 60's. He is some performer. The music was amazing, the riffs put me back in the 60's and yes, I do remember them. The energy from the band was high and the guitar player was way cool. This was one of the best shows I have seen this year. My wife loved it too, we both grew up with this music and still love it. Comments from the crowd were good too as everyone loved Mott the Hoople who was that some said. This was a total retro show with class and high caliber music. This is one not to miss, Jethro Tull were very gracious and numerous times thanked the crowd for coming. I like that. Thanks for playing... Boca was a good venue and the crowd well behaved. Frozen Yogurt outside topped off the evening. JETHRO TULL RULES...

Tull hit Florida like a hurricane!

by FanSInce1975 on 6/5/10Mizner Park Amphitheater - Boca Raton

I stopped counting my Tull shows after 20, and give last night's show all "5" stars. Clearly Ian and Martin will pack-it-in long before they ever hit the stage unprepared or lackluster. The 6-4 Boca Raton show was stellar, shooting out like a cannon with the opener, Cross-Eyed Mary. The only song that played a tad weak was the blues number, Beggar's Farm, but as song #2 I don't think the sound mix had been brought under control yet. Aqualung had Ian's 'singing out of a bottle' feedback, and Martin's Top 25 Guitar Solos Of All Time, restored. The ballons were back (but no Cheerio). Locomotive Breath needs the train whistle, and Songs From The Wood needs Ian's giant cymbals-- but now I'm talking to the die-hard fan's. All in all, people left in stunned disbelief at how great Tull still is!! Thanks for not forgetting the Florida fan's, even if it was just for one show.

    My trip to Boca

by bolts1 on 6/5/10Mizner Park Amphitheater - Boca Raton

My son and I drove from Melbourne to Boca. We both had a wonderful time. The venue was nice and Jethro Tull was magnificent! Every member of the band is an outstanding musician!

    Not as good as before

by LauderdaleBill on 6/5/10Mizner Park Amphitheater - Boca Raton

I love Ian, but unfortunately, his voice ain't what it used to be. I saw him years ago, and he was as good as anyone, including the Stones, McCartney, the Who, Floyd, or the rest of them. Twenty some years ago he was an incredible showman. Tonight there was no set, lighting as average, and maybe the venue was not the best.

Jethro Tull -- Diverse and Entertaining

by BJ4083 on 6/5/10Mizner Park Amphitheater - Boca Raton

I figured I had to see Jethro Tull once in my life, and this was it. They did not disappoint. Starting off with cross-eyed Mary, they rolled into some other early songs, including Beggar's Farm, New Day Yesterday, and Nothing is Easy. These songs represent my favorite records by the band -- This Was... and Stand Up. Late in the set, they covered perhaps their most famous record, Aqualung, and they did a fine job on those songs. They were certainly the crowd favorites. As the band played, I was struck by the diversity of their set -- blues, folk, progressive, and even baroque. The band has a great sound -- really great tone from their instruments, dynamic, tight playing, and fantastic musicianship all around. Ian Anderson gets a big fat tone from his flute. However, his voice sounded nasal and weak, and not as rich as I remember from the early records. It sounded OK with some songs, but not others. Nevertheless, he was very entertaining, as I expected. The opening band with Ian Hunter was fine, but the crowd didn't get into it until he started playing songs they knew, beginning with Sweet Jane and then finishing with his hit "All the Way from Memphis". Some in the crowd wanted him to come out for an encore and play "All the Young Dudes", but I guess he felt he was done. Overall, it was a fine concert. I didn't mind the occasional rain, but I did mind the crowded seats at the amphitheater. They line the chairs up with no space in between them, and you are squeezed in between your neighbors. For over $60 a ticket, I expect more than this.

Jethro Tull puts on a great show.

by Mampam on 6/5/10Mizner Park Amphitheater - Boca Raton

Ian Anderson is a talented flute player and his voice shows some wear. The band held together on long jazzy songs. First act- Ian Hunter was OK. Lacking in something. All and All a Very enjoyable evening.

    Best one ever!

by flarogue7 on 6/5/10Mizner Park Amphitheater - Boca Raton

Let me start off by saying I have been a Tull fan since the 70's. But keeping that in mind, it was an outstanding concert. Ian Hunter was the warm up band and he is a great songwriter and musician, but not thrilling. But Tull was great! I took my girlfriend for the first time she has seen Tull and she was amazed. The music was flawless and the stage show as always entertaining. The only two things I have to say bad about the concert was a slight rain dampened the event but kept the temperatures down. The only other criticism I have is with the venue which the seating was confusing to many people. I didn't have a problem but there were people around me that couldn't find the right seats.

Martin Barre and Jethro Tull band Classic Staple

by JAZZULES on 6/5/10Mizner Park Amphitheater - Boca Raton

It was a real treat witnessing this concert, having been a fan since 1969 as a student at the University of California and hearing Martin Barre who's blend of Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton blues with baroque complexties from the band had everyone standing up. Martin's solo on his Paul Reed Smith 513 Electric to Locomative Breath was a classic guitar. The night was filled with classical, folk, jazz and art rock. Songs from Stand-Up,Aqualung,Thick as a Brick,Living in the Past and Benefit were clear, crisp and good enough to make you change your religion. Thanks to all the band for giving south florida their personal best. Oh by the way, Iron Maiden sat with me along with Ian Jamison and Mimi.

Jethro Tull and Ian Hunter in Boca Raton

by Anonymous on 6/5/10Mizner Park Amphitheater - Boca Raton

Ian Hunter didn't do "Dudes"--I want my money back! I think Ian blew out his voice on "All The Way From Memphis". Tull was excellent. Ian Anderson can still sing (unlike Ian Hunter), and he is as theatrical and animated as ever. The rest of the band sounded great too.

    Tull does not disappoint

by Erasmus69 on 6/5/10Mizner Park Amphitheater - Boca Raton

Martin Barre's guitar work was and still is phenomenal. Perry on drums and Goodier on bass were powerful and driving where necessary and O'hara on keyboards, accordion and instruments of exotic origins was spot on perfect. Ian Anderson is, of course, a virtuoso of the highest magnitude. Blending musical styles and influences covering rock, blues, jazz, classical, Elizabethan and middle-eastern he kept us all on our feet utterly mesmerized with his performance and showmanship. Tull rocks! Don't miss it!!

Jethro Tull brought back great memories!

by MrMike101 on 6/5/10Mizner Park Amphitheater - Boca Raton

Jethro Tull was as good as in the 70's. Venue was good, great acoustic. The seating was disorganized, but managed to fine our seats. I would recommend to friends.

Jethro Tull was brilliant as usual

by DTM714 on 6/5/10Mizner Park Amphitheater - Boca Raton

Great show! Could have done without the rain. No bother. The show must go on! The TULL set started around 9:20pm, after it appeared that the people in charge of the show would not let the Ian Hunter Band perform an encore. Ian Hunter started at 8:05pm (5 mins. late maybe?) Tull began their set with Cross-Eyed Mary and then Beggar's Farm. A surprise for me. I thought what next? Dahrma for One? They played a lot of older stuff like Nothing is Easy, A New Day Yesterday, My God, Songs From the Wood and Jack in the Green. Budapest was the youngest "TULL" song that was played. They finished the set with Aqualung. Locomotive Breath was the encore. Along with the incomparable mainstays of Ian Anderson, Martin “Lancelot” Barre and Doane Perry, David Goodier on Bass and John O’Hara on keys , excellent musicians in their one right, put on one heck of a show. If you are TULL fan, you must go to this show. An extra bonus for me was finally being able to see Ian Hunter in concert. Thumbs Up from this TULL fan!

I'm 52 and Jethro Tull was a favorite of mine in the 70's. I was disappointed not at the quality of the music but at the song choices. They really got carried away with the Irish folk stuff in the middle and ended up not playing some of their most rocken songs.

    Much better than I expected!

by CSE2 on 6/5/10Mizner Park Amphitheater - Boca Raton

Last time I saw Jethro Tull was 1975, and I didn't know what to expect now. It was just great. Ian Anderson, Martin Barre and company haven't lost a thing and really seemed to be having fun. Anderson's banter between songs was entertaining and he interspersed big name material with beautiful new songs.
