Jethro Tull on Tour

Ian Anderson — Jethro Tull's flautist, vocalist and guitarist — leads the band's live shows. With bold charisma, he pairs his instrumental work with mesmerizing, full-bodied dance moves that match the band's dramatic musical intricacies. Anderson's bandmates also ably channel the emotional arcs of Jethro Tull's arrangements, creating a concert experience that can feel like a lot like a theater production. The band toured heavily for decades after forming in 1968, appearing at high-profile events such as the Isle of Wight Festival, and became known for elaborate stage setups and costumes. In 2018, Anderson celebrated the band's half-century existence with a tour dubbed 50 Years of Jethro Tull.

Jethro Tull in Concert

The legendary prog band played their first concert in London at the iconic Marquee Club on February 2, 1968. The gig was a long time coming: Prior to cofounding the group, Anderson had been performing with several other acts, including the John Evan Band. However, once his fledgling group's booking agency suggested the name Jethro Tull — in reference to a real-life English agriculturist — the band was off to the races.

Chart and sales success came early and often. Jethro Tull's second album, 1969's Stand Up, hit No. 1 in the UK and was certified gold, while 1971's landmark Aqualung went triple-platinum and 1972's Thick as a Brick topped the U.S. charts. As their career progressed, the band evolved along with musical trends and embraced styles such as hard rock, synth-rock and metal (in addition to the usual mix of folk, blues and rock). That penchant for progress also paid off: In 1988, Jethro Tull won the inaugural Hard Rock/Metal Grammy Award, and the 1987 album Crest of a Knave won Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance Vocal or Instrumental. Recent years have seen the release of archival live albums and hits collections, both of which illuminate the band's deep catalog.

Ian Anderson is still an excellent performer with his flute and his voice. It was a very good and entertaining concert. Enjoyable from beginning to end.

    Utterly Fantastic!

by Crow on 11/8/23The Palace Theatre Albany - Albany

Jethro Tull has so many epic hits; you only wished it could have gone on a bit longer. Event parking was less than a five-minute walk to the Palace's Extraordinary Historic and Artful venue. Everything just seemed to flow making the evening all that much better. It was a great pleasure to attend.

Good musicianship, vocals not so much.

by Sleepyjoe1960 on 11/8/23The Palace Theatre Albany - Albany

I was very excited about this show and had high hopes. Music wise everyone was on point. Ian Anderson's vocals were rough. I understand he's 74 years old, and with that being said, I saw Paul McCartney 3 days before his 80th birthday and he was spot on. The show opened and his vocals started out well but quickly diminished. I did enjoy the show, the stage effects and the banter. Just wished the vocals were a tad better

    A stellar musician.

by ferretgrrl on 11/8/23The Palace Theatre Albany - Albany

Ian Anderson is an amazing musician. He is 76 but he can still rock and roll! He has been having problems with his voice for many years, but his flute playing and the quality of the music is still a 10/10.

    Brilliant experience

    by TAK on 11/8/23

Granted, this was the first time I'd seen Jethro Tull in concert, but I was not disappointed. I really enjoyed listening to him play. Some of the vocals were hard to make out, but overall, I was very glad that I went and had the experience of listening to the band play.

    Strong flute weak vocals

by Ziti on 11/8/23The Palace Theatre Albany - Albany

This was my first Tull concert and being billed as 7 Decades, I was expecting mostly material from the early days. Instead, they played mostly unfamiliar tracks from newer albums. Ian’s flute playing was amazing, the real highlight of the show. His vocals were weak and got worse as the show went on. I think Ian should stick to playing his flute and perhaps leave the vocals to others. I sure wish I had seen them in their hey day, save your money.

    Amazing shook the Palace theater

by Tull Fan 73 on 11/8/23The Palace Theatre Albany - Albany

Seen Tull on four previous occasions, and they didn't dissapoint! One of the best rock bands in history. Played the best mix of songs I've ever heard at a Tull concert. Everything from early Tull to the latest. Songs like ,We used to know, Dark Ages, locomotive breath, zealot gene, and the newer wold unchained, navigators, and hunt by numbers. As a flute player, I can tell you Ian truly has the Puff to turn that flute into a snarling snorting living rock beast! LOVED IT! Thanks Gentlemen for all the years of TULL.

    Get off my lawn

by Not for me on 11/8/23The Palace Theatre Albany - Albany

This show was the equivalent of a crotchety old man yelling at kids to get off his lawn. Strictly enforced cell phone ban because “it’s distracting”, but a balloon bouncing around the audience was fine. We touched on how he says Christmas and not happy holidays. We also got some info on the Eagles stealing his music with a dig during his song referencing the “holiday inn”. And lest you forget, he mentioned their merchandise no less than 3 times. It felt like a money grab rather than a true desire to connect with audiences again.

    Worst concert ever

by Highly disappointed on 11/8/23The Palace Theatre Albany - Albany

I have to tell you it’s been years since I’ve seen Jethro Tull. I wish I would’ve left it at that because seeing this concert has disappointed me so much I know we’re all getting older, but the sound was horrible. The instrumentals were great. The vocals were horrible the show was more like a Dramatic folk medley of just bad music . So disappointed.

    Brought me back in time....

by Titsche on 11/8/23The Palace Theatre Albany - Albany

This band includes some very talented musicians, especially the lead guitar player. Ian Anderson still plays the flute without missing a note. Even his voice sounded great. I wish they had played more older Jethro Tull songs.

    Disappointed

by Long time fan on 11/8/23The Palace Theatre Albany - Albany

When a tour is called “Decades” it is natural for the ticket buyer to expect the show to be filled with hits from their extensive catalog. That was not the case at the Jethro Tull show at the palace. The show was filled with obscure songs with only a few hits sprinkled in. The 2 song encore consisted of Aqualung and Locomotive Breath. The band did alternate versions of these songs that were completely different than the versions we have loved for years. I was so disappointed with this show that I actually started thinking that bands should post the songs they are planning on playing before a ticket is bought. During the 70’s to 90’s I must have scene Jethro Tull 20 times. This was by far the worst show I have ever seen.

Too Loud and Little of 7 Decades

by Big Fan on 11/8/23The Palace Theatre Albany - Albany

Ian’s voice was lacking but he can still Play that flute. His band was exceptional with the lead guitar and drummer outstanding. The sound was deafening and not necessary. I really wanted to hear more of the 7 decades but came away disappointed.

Cute rememberance of what Tull was

by D Art on 11/8/23The Palace Theatre Albany - Albany

Cute. The three classic tull songs were good made me think that Jethro Tull wasn't as great since the 80s began. Although the Christmas album is quite good. Trajectly they decided not to play their hits. The new stuff doesn't really compare. Many in the audience were older than Ian Anderson at 76 that's amazing. In our sunset years give us just a bit more if what we came for. People got uncomfortable and really bored looking for the hits. Play more than 3. Maybe 5 or 6 spread out in beginning, middle and end. Nice to see and sad thinking about their glory days. I think they peaked in 1978

Time for Ian Anderson to retire

by Jonathan on 11/7/23Beacon Theatre - New York

I have never been more disappointed by a concert in my life. I had been waiting literally 40 years to see Jethro Tull I’m concert and now wish I hadn’t bought the tickets Ian Anderson’s voice was horrific. He literally *barked* out the higher notes because he couldn’t hit them. It felt like being at a high school battle of the bands where the lead singer was going through puberty. I honestly feel like I got ripped off. The music itself was great, but that didn’t even remotely make up for the horrendous vocals. Don’t waste your money if they’re coming to a venue near you. Seriously, don’t.
