Jesus Christ Superstar on Tour

The musical-theater version of composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice's hit 1970 rock opera gets the passionate revival it has long deserved when the Regent's Park Open Air Theatre's production of Jesus Christ Superstar comes to the United States. The show's 50th Anniversary Tour offers an emotionally resonant, hard-rocking experience that debuted in London in 2016. Director Timothy Sheader and choreographer Drew McOnie's cutting-edge production won a Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival and the BBC Radio 2 Audience Award for Best Musical at the Evening Standard Theatre Awards. The 50th Anniversary Tour marks the first major revival of Jesus Christ Superstar in nearly a decade.

Jesus Christ Superstar Background

Jesus Christ Superstar originated as a high-concept rock opera with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice in 1970 and sold more than 7 million copies by 1983. Their account of Jesus' last week of life made its Broadway debut as a musical in 1971, dazzling audiences with its stirringly maximal music and minimal dialogue. Two film adaptations followed, in 1973 and 1999, and NBC aired a live concert version, starring John Legend as Jesus, on April 1 (Easter Sunday), 2018.

"This is not your grandmother's Superstar," Catey Sullivan wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times when Timothy Sheader directed the musical in Chicago in 2018. "Drew McOnie's choreography has the explosive feel of barely contained ecstasy, filled with flailing movements that evoke old time tent revivals where snake handlers spoke in tongues and miraculously cured the sick."

The 50th Anniversary Tour production of Jesus Christ Superstar stars actor-singer-songwriter Aaron La Vigne as Jesus, actor-poet James Delisco Beeks as Judas and Jenna Rubaii as Mary Magdalene. You'll shout hallelujah! during the onstage rock band's renditions of "This Jesus Must Die," "I Don't Know How to Love Him" and "Superstar." And when one of the Pharisees sings, "One thing I'll say for him, Jesus is cool," you will take him at his word.

    Not Super, but Good

by Not Amused on 11/7/19Hollywood Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

I've been wanting to see JCS since I was a kid and last week was my 1st opportunity. The overall production was well done and I enjoyed it. The Good: The cast had great voices and the choreography was fantastic as it had a little of Twyla Tharp feel to it. The Not So Good: 90 Minutes from start to finish without intermission! Because of this, it seemed 'rushed' and you really didn't get to understand the characters. The only other 'gripe' I have is that all singing characters had hand-held microphones. This was to give the show a 'concert' feeling to it and all it did for me was distract. While I appreciate they were trying to give the show a more 'hip' feel to it, it fell flat for me and, again, it took away from the characters. Overall, the experience was good and I'm glad I got to see it for the 50th anniversary. P.S.- Leave your children home unless they have a good understanding of what they're about to see. There's nothing more distracting than a parent having to explain what is going on the stage during the performance.

    Spectacular

by L. W. on 11/7/19Hollywood Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

Judas’s Voice and acting was amazing. The supporting cast, costumes, choreography was 5 Stars. I was amazed how good it was! So glad we went! First time seeing the show- full of life, music and entertainment. The mob against Jesus made me think of the division mob like arena of today. Evil vs Good. This play is so accurate in its display of hate today. Chilling!

    Epic Performance!!

by Janet on 11/6/19Hollywood Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

I had seen this rock opera in the 70s so hoped it would be half as good as it was then. It was a hundred times better with the updated costumes, amazing vocals and captivating choreography. Our seats were fantastic in this beautiful venue. FANTASTIC!!!!

Great music - couldn't hear words clearly

by T. on 11/6/19Hollywood Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

I"m not sure if it was a speaker, mic or singing problem at the Pantages. I love this play and have seen it a few times over the years. I loved the energy and everyone seemed to sing very well. I knew all the lyrics by heart but the 5 other people with me had not seen it. They all had the same issue that you just couldn't make out what was being said in much of the songs. That is very disappointing. Again, not sure what caused that problem but for the money spent we should have had been sound.

    good show

by bxb on 11/6/19Hollywood Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

ticket only on the phone app - kinda annoying, but we'll roll with it. Parking was at a $$$ close lot, could have found cheaper, so watch for those. Seat was an aisle in center Mezzanine, had a good view. I've never seen the show, only the music, so it was new to me. It seemed like maybe a 'modern' interpretation, but I had nothing to compare it to, if it had ever been different. The major (ie well known) songs wer rendered well, but the final one (Jesus Christ Superstar) seemed a bit... weak. Like it was not resounding or forceful or fortissimo. Good, but not outstanding. I'm glad I saw it, now I have to pull out the music and review that with the show images in my head.

    Modern Version

by The Roop on 11/6/19Hollywood Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

I did not particularly like the modern version. Would have preferred the classic version and without the electric guitar and heavy metal music.

    Pantages-Never a disappointment

by Dallas on 11/6/19Hollywood Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

I love the ambiance of the Pantages. It reminds me of the theatres in the West End. Smaller and more intimate. With the larger venues there is more of a disconnect. It's easy to get in and out of the theatre although parking is quite pricey in that areas. Overall, the Pantages is my favorite LA area venue. Jesus Christ Superstar was outstanding. I read a review in the LA Times that was not too flattering, but he was all wrong. Good thing I don't let critics ruin my choice of entertainment.

    Pleasantly Surprised

by Oldhatman on 11/6/19Hollywood Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

Our first time to see this musical was a pleasant surprise. The unique stage layout was very intriguing and well executed. We had a hard time hearing some of the lyrics and would suggest looking up the words to the songs ahead of time to get a better understanding of their content.

    Not as expected.

by Adelite on 11/6/19Hollywood Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

The show was more like a very loud live concert than a stage play that I was expecting.

    Fantastic Show

by Slindo on 11/6/19Hollywood Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

Entire show was fantastic. Truly first class entertainment from the performers to the band to the stage production. Very surprised how much I enjoyed the show. 90 minutes with no intermission was perfect and left me wanting more.

    very good

by r. v. on 11/6/19Hollywood Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

I enjoyed the JC Superstar very much but it wasn't the WOW I expected. There was too much darkness and it was distracting. There were moments that did wow me but not enough of those.

    50 years and still incredible!

by T. C. on 11/6/19Hollywood Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

Hard to believe this musical is 50 years old! I had seen the 1973 movie as a teenager (and a few dozen times since!) but had yet to see it performed on stage. What an amazing production!! I had to stop myself from singing along!

Webber and Rice at their best

by shron17 on 11/6/19Hollywood Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

JCSS is one of my very favorites shows that I have now seen three times. This particular cast, staging, performance was so good that I have also booked it again in San Diego next week. I'm still singing the songs three days later! The Pantages is iconic. What a beautiful theatre!!

    Amazing production

by RW on 11/6/19Hollywood Pantages Theatre - Los Angeles

The set and lighting were inspired. Having the orchestra on stage, above the action, rather than beneath the stage in the pit, was genius. The music was performed beautifully. The cast was fantastic. The performances that stood out to me were Judas, Pilot, Caiaphas, and Christ. They not only played the role, but brought it to life. Great production. I would definitely see it again and recommend it to anyone.
