1969 all over again--I don't want to get old--

by sinners on 8/5/09Genesee Theatre - Waukegan

I wish the movie that was on the back screen was up higher. We could not see it. And it would be have been nice to see.

    ABSOLUTELY TERRIFIC

by nolajo on 8/5/09Genesee Theatre - Waukegan

isn’t descriptive enough for everyone involved...Country Joe as the performer/emcee between acts, which were Canned Heat (Great); Big Brother & the Holding Company (who included an amazing Janis Joplin-impressionist whose last song still, literally, makes my throat hurt); AND there aren’t words-aren't-enough Jefferson Starship, who incredibly performed the Woodstock set of Jefferson Airplane with their singer, Cathy Richardson, who was simply outstanding. It was an unforgettable night...

All of the bands were amazing ,especially the lead singer for Big Brother. she had the audience on their feet halfway through her set. And Kathy the female vocals for Jefferson Starship is an amazing artist,

    Woodstock in a Theater?

    by mstang94 on 8/3/09Genesee Theatre - Waukegan

Not what I was expecting. I really wanted to see Quicksilver messenger Service. They only sang 1 of their songs, Fresh Air. There was "new" songs..... Who wants to hear NEW songs... We wanted to trip back to 1969! This was the first concert I went to that EVERY BAND (except Country Joe) opened with thier biggest hit (Aren't they supposed to save that for the Encore?) Sitting in a theater is not the way to appreciate the music of the 60's. I wanted to dance, but the old people around me did not appreciate it, they just sat staring at the stage. Needless to say, we left before Jefferson Starship was over. I hope the show they put on at Galt Airport is better, at least you get to dance in a field and drink beer, a little more like the real thing.

    "Truth lives all around us..."

by Andycat on 8/3/09Genesee Theatre - Waukegan

Look...there's nostalgia that's revisionist and nostalgia that conjures up relevance and reflective recollections. Of course, that's mostly up to who you were, who you are, and what you have become. My wife and I spent a fine four hours last Friday at the Genesee Theater dipping into our past and finding it still sweet both to the senses and the intellect. Since I'm over 60 now I don't care very much what anyone thinks of the things in my life that have sustained my spirit over the years. We read books that were written hundreds of years ago, see plays that have been performed throughout the centuries, view paintings and sculptures from antiquity. Why would it be so strange that the song-poems of our own youth may hold truths and inspiration that are alive and of value to this day? None of the bands, Canned Heat, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Quicksilver Messenger Service, The Jefferson Airplane (the "Starship" moniker is for legal purposes only in my book), or my beloved Country Joe McDonald have all their original parts. But the music, the art, is not totally about the specific individuals, but about their spirit and legacy and what slight vision of truth we may obtain. At times we strain in our culture to honor the brave, the innovators. But this night was indeed a night of honor for the entities that are continued in these bands. I'm probably an odd one, but the Quicksilver Messenger Service's first album and "Electric Music For the Mind and Body" and "I Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die" from Country Joe and the Fish were among the first entries on my IPOD. I listen to them all the time as I have for 40 + years. So this night was not a journey to a forgotten, cobwebbed past, but a chance to hear live the music that still touches my soul. It was pretty obvious that most of the older members of all the bands have known each other for years and still look to each other for those bonds that have only grown stronger despite the sure pace of time. And there was no pity or regret about the members of the bands who have already left us; they were honored by the love that showed forth in the performances. So what was especially good, memorable? Well...depending on one's age and the point in life where this music entered one's existence, there could be as many choices as there were songs and banter. Canned Heat boogied without Big Bear Bob Hite, but no one sat still for a single moment. I was incredibly impressed by Sam Andrew of Big Brother who was so obviously still entranced in the rapture of their songs as he spun the licks as if it were decades ago today. The young lady, Sara Ramos, I believe, who stood in for Janis, had not just the pipes, but also the respect that no doubt brought her to play w/Andrew, Ablin, and Getz, honoring Janis and that special, too short time past. David Freiberg, as only he can do, took Quicksilver's "Fresh Air" and "Pride of Man" and served them up to us all with energy and gusto as Gary Duncan played as only he can. Paul Kanter's choice of "Eskimo Blue Day" was stunning as Kathy Richardson gave us the strident tones needed in the polemic. But, as always, if there are any "heroes" of the Woodstock experience it is Country Joe McDonald who stands out. If there is a true patriot among us from that time, it is he. I remember when I was overseas in the Army how we listened to he and the Fish and all but prayed for an end to the war and that we were grateful that he and others stood up for the soldiers and sailors who we were at that time. How many people know how much work he has done, and continues to do, for veterans of all our foolish wars? I met him at the opening of a club in Chicago several years ago. I said to him, "Joe, I hope you have had a good life. We listened to your music in the service and it helped sustain us. You are a true patriot." And humble as is his wont, and slightly embarrassed, he said, "Well...I tried to do what I could." And in between sets, he made the a statement that reflected what was really happening at the time of Woodstock. He read the names of all the young men and women from the county in New York state where Yasgur's farm sat who were killed in the Vietnam War. I guess I had forgotten how young we once were; the far majority of the ages of the dead were 19 or 20. But I wasn't sad and didn't leave with regret. I left with the tunes running through my head, looking forward to hearing the songs again and again and again until it's my turn.

    Money well spent!!!!!!!

by Tooncie on 8/3/09Genesee Theatre - Waukegan

Loved Country Joe, as always. He really kept the show together. Canned Heat was a great start to the show. It felt like they never skipped a beat. Big Brother was great, I just have a hard time with anyone trying to step into the shoes of Janis. Quicksilver was a disappointment, as I think that their first album was the best, and they had no need for a female vocalist. She had a shrill voice that detracted from their performance. Jefferson Starship was really good, and I loved the performance of Cathy Richardson. She was actually one of the best parts of the show considering that she was born the year of Woodstock. She really has a feel for the era. It was great to see people like Sam Andrews, Paul Kantner, David Frieberg and Country Joe. That took me back to my younger years, and I would like to see shows with them more often. I spent many evenings in my teens watching these men who have become "Legends" at venues like the Electric Theater, Aragon, Filmore West, Family Dog, and Festivals in the Midwest.

I closed my eyes and was transported back to 1969

by SuzyOne on 8/3/09Genesee Theatre - Waukegan

As soon as Canned Heat started playing, you got over the fact that almost everyone in the audience was as old as you are. Everyone was there for the music and memories.

    HOW

by patsom on 8/3/09Genesee Theatre - Waukegan

Fantastic! Canned Heat and Cathy Richardson in particular were unbelievable (as always!). Everyone was great, it was fun to be at and I would go again in a minute! It was a great venue but should have started at 8 because it was a rush from the NW side of Chicago after work but worth the effort. Great music, great atmosphere, and just a fun night! Love the Genesee but the ushers get a little upset if you stand by the door with a drink listening to the music!? It would be great to have a speaker in the bar area at the Genesee because I missed a song I wanted to hear and would have abandoned my drink to go hear it! All in all, I hope they keep playing and I would go again! (come to the Chicago area!!!!)

    heros- mixed bag

by wandering on 8/2/09Genesee Theatre - Waukegan

Country Joes was delightful, fine music, good vibes. Canned heat was spectacular- they would be worth hearing alone- and the next act also was good. The last two acts, unfortunately were very disappointing- Jefferson Starship was especially disappointing insofar as it was their act that was most anticipated. The vocal-music mix was distorted, so the words were almost impossible to hear, and to add to that the number of songs played were few.

    Missing Acts

by raguzzap on 8/1/09Genesee Theatre - Waukegan

The concert I attended in Waukegan (40 miles from Chicago) was somewhat of a dissapointment due to line up changes. Ten Years After or Mountain did not play. Instead Quicksilver Messenger showed up, who to my knowledge, was not part of Woodstock 69? Maybe it was the concert's marketing, which confused me as to which bands would play and where....

    The music rocked

by DGOLFERD on 8/1/09Genesee Theatre - Waukegan

I really enjoyed the music. I was disappointed at the turnout. There were many empty seats. The concert was excellant and deserved a full house. The crowd that was there really got into the music. Canned Heat rocked! Cathy Richardson was very enjoyable singing with Jefferson Starship. Sophia Ramos was awesome singing the Janis Joplin tunes with Big Brother and the Holding Company. There was a projection behind the bands of the trailer for the 40th anniversary Director's cut of the movie which looped throughout the show. It would've been nice to see something besides that video... over and over for 4 hours. As I said earlier, the music rocked. If there had been more production tying it to the original event it might've been awesome.

    Hero's of Woodstock

    by iPilot1 on 8/1/09Genesee Theatre - Waukegan

3 1/2 hours +, endless intrumental bridges, few hits played, Starship was the mainliner and they played just one hit. Mostly a dreary event punctuated by a few brilliant individual performances, but not enough to be able to recommend it.

    A blast from the past

by EarthWoman on 8/1/09Genesee Theatre - Waukegan

My husband and I had so much fun at the Hero's of Woodstock event at the Genessee theater in Waukegan IL. The music was great. The bands were fun to listen to and it wasn't too loud. Big Brother and the Holding Company was out of this world. The new lead singer (sang just like Janis or better) was unbelievable. I would highly recommend this venue to anyone of our age or actually any age!!!

by LAELD on 8/1/09Genesee Theatre - Waukegan

It was a heck of a drive with the construction, but well worth the trip! The bands are still rocking after 40 years. Had some new young blood especially Big Brother and the Holding Company. Their guitarist, and Janis stand in was totally awesome.

    Ultra-Geezer Rock

by Vooodooo on 8/1/09Genesee Theatre - Waukegan

I enjoyed this concert however it really reminds you how old you've gotten. Big Brother and the Holding Company stole the show with their incredible Janis replacement (Wow what a voice!!) Canned Heat were also still able to rock after 40 years. I have to say I was never really a Jefferson Airplane, Starship, Rocket Launcher (or whatever else they called themselves through the years) fan, and Quicksilver Messanger seemed kind of like the originators of what became the Dave Matthews Band i.e. songs that wander around and go nowhere.
