About

Over the course of his five-decade career, Jeff Beck has proven himself one of music's most versatile, skilled and influential guitarists, making important contributions to rock, heavy metal, jazz and even electronic music. Beck found his first work as a musician playing with Screaming Lord Sutch and the Tridents in the early '60s. In 1965, Beck joined the Yardbirds, replacing lead guitarist Eric Clapton. After a two-year stint with the Yardbirds, Beck formed a new band, The Jeff Beck Group, featuring vocalist Rod Stewart. The group's gritty, rough sound helped pave the way for future hard rock/heavy metal bands. By the mid-'70s, Beck had changed directions musically, recording the ground-breaking jazz-fusion albums Blow By Blow and Wired (in collaboration with keyboardist Jan Hammer). Beck reemerged in the '80s with There and Back and Flash, featuring the Grammy Award-winning track "Escape." Beck won another Grammy for Best Rock Instrumental with his 1989 release Jeff Beck's Guitar Shop with Terry Bozzio and Tony Hymas. In the early '90s Beck released Crazy Legs, a tribute to rockabilly singer Gene Vincent and guitarist Cliff Gallup, followed by Who Else! in 1999. The song "Dirty Mind" from the 2001 album You Had It Coming won Beck his third Grammy. On the 2003 release Jeff, Beck continued to break new ground, collaborating with trip-hop artist David Torn, the electronic group Apollo 440 and a 40-piece orchestra.

  • This is a tour you should not miss

by HeGe on 4/17/10Nob Hill Masonic Auditorium - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

I had not been listening to Jeff Beck for the last 20 years, I liked his music in the past, but I had never seen him live. So I went to the concert mainly to "tick off" one of the last great guitar players around from my list. I was mighty surprised about how well Jeff sounded. A georgous and clean sound, his style is still truly unique, and his technique is as smooth as ever. The band was great, as well as the acoustics of the Nob Hill Masonic. I have to admit I don´t remember all the details of the evening, like the songs (but all are songs you would recognize), because I was so amazed by Jeff. I can´t remember a concert that would have touched me as much as this for many, many years. Awesome!

  • Jeff is THE MAN!

by DCLG on 4/17/10Nob Hill Masonic Auditorium - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

Mr. Jeff Beck's command of the Stratocaster is simply amazing!... Nice to see/hear him in a smaller venue, and his backing band of seasoned Pros were spot on as well! Great show... A+

  • Jeff Beck-A great sonic journey on the front edge.

by Gtrjones on 4/17/10Nob Hill Masonic Auditorium - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

This guy is still as fresh as ever. Bringing an amazingly tight band(he makes them earn their keep) and seamlessly changing moods and attitudes. He's always saying something with his guitar. He takes the expression of the instrument to a different level. He also seems to be having a good time doing it. I believe most people would enjoy this. Even folks who do not traditionally like instrumental performances may enjoy this. A great sonic journey.

  • Jeff Beck was absolutely FANTASTIC & UNFORGETTABLE

JEFF BECK IS THE GREATEST GUITAR PLAYER IN THE WORLD..THERE IS NO ONE THAT EVEN COMES CLOSE .........

  • Phenomenal!

by PLHAL on 4/17/10Nob Hill Masonic Auditorium - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

Jeff Beck's San Francisco's 4/16/2010 concert was nothing less than phenomenal! His ability with the guitar is incredible. Having heard most ot the guitar greats over the past 40 years I can honestly say that no one was, or is at, Jeff's present level with respect to skill and innovation. Having last seen Jeff in the early 70's I am sorry that I have missed any of his concerts between now and then. His band was execptional. The drummer and keyboardist rank among the best as well. I am going to go on line this morning to see if I can catch another Jeff Beck concert in the US while he is here! Thanks Jeff!

  • Jeff was good, venue was not

by Kjjs on 4/17/10Nob Hill Masonic Auditorium - San FranciscoRating: 3 out of 5

I only saw his face and playing about 5 times, his back was too us nearly the whole time. i do not like the new bassist, she is too much of a show off and shouldn't sing. I see Jeff everytime he is here and this wasn't my favorite show for sure.

  • Jeff Beck stretches time.

by Rippah on 4/17/10Nob Hill Masonic Auditorium - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

Time cages us in. Time is our tormentor as our to-do lists grow and grow. But, Jeff Beck can release us from the shackles of time, and free our minds to travel with him into the cosmos. What an incredible journey last night! Jeff Beck took us on a strange and beautiful pilgrimage at the Masonic Auditorium that was like living in a dream. Yeah, OK, but how? When you use modern software to mix music, you can zoom into the beat and see who is right on the beat and who is sloppy, barely missing. It is rare and incredible when a great musician has perfect timing. Well, JB is soooo freakin' good, that he can play off the beat intentionally in an amount that you cannot pick up consciously, but registers on a subconscious level. Mr. Beck can then incrementally advance that space between his note and the beat in such small amounts that he seems to be stretching time itself. Jeff Beck is the master of playing rhythms that are practically impossible. JB is constantly messing with the timing of his music, applying lightening-like speed and incredible patience. Time is our way of maintaining order in the chaos of our universe. But, Jeff Beck is stretching time itself! Nothing feels more liberating to the soul than a Jeff Beck concert. Last night at the Masonic was all joy.

  • Jeff Beck gave a master class with class

by xam1 on 4/17/10Nob Hill Masonic Auditorium - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

I felt completely honored to be in attendance at last night's Jeff Beck's show. Beck is a true master of his craft and he left no doubt that his skill is still at an apex. The ensemble of players were exemplary, the music choice varied and nuanced. I resolved to never miss another show as long as he will grace the stage.

  • Jeff Beck Shreds!

Awesome show. Jeff's playing was sublime. He can make you cry one second and then shreds your soul the next! The Masonic Auditorium was the pefect venue. intimate and great sound. Glad I made the show!

  • Jeff Beck still rules!

by gramparocker on 4/17/10Nob Hill Masonic Auditorium - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

This concert is right at the top! Just amazing-the whole band rocks. Tal gets to show case her bass skills, Vinnie as always a super energy drummer, and of course Jason Rebello on keyboards-hope they all stay together for more concerts.

  • MAGNIFICENT!!

by Roadhog on 4/17/10Nob Hill Masonic Auditorium - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

SF soundly welcomed the Guv'ner and he strongly responded. After an extended standing ovation which seemed to move him, he amped-up the show even more. The Masonic Center is an acoustically perfect venue. I hope a "live" recording will come out of this night.

  • Jeff Beck, guitar king

by Shocko on 4/17/10Nob Hill Masonic Auditorium - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

once again, another excellent Jeff Beck concert. the guitar king rocked the Masonic last night. beautiful rendition of Over the Rainbow along with a hot version of Sly Stone's "take you Higher" and a killer version of the Beatles "Day in the Life" I was blown away...

  • Beck is still the best!

by Silletto on 4/17/10Nob Hill Masonic Auditorium - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

I've seen Jeff Beck 7 times dating back to the early 70's. The last time was at the Paramount in Oakland. I didn't think he could ever top himself but he did. The pure emotion combined with his masterful technique and soulful grooves was absolutely amazing. Jeff always plays his best when he has the best backing band. This new line up was unbelievable. Narada Michael Walden is one of the best drummers out there. I don't remember the bass player's name, but she more than filled Tal's shoes. She had a non stop groove and was extremely versitile playing upright on some of the orchestral pieces and has a great voice. I loved the tribute to Les Paul in the encore too. If you are interested in seeing the best guitarist alive today, you have to catch Jeff Beck!

  • Beck revitalized!

by marksil on 4/17/10Nob Hill Masonic Auditorium - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

I've never seen Jeff Beck so happy and involved both with his band and his audience. I think he finally realizes the depth of love and admiration his fans have for him,. last night was about Jeff Beck as Pied piper, and we would follow him anywhere. "A Day In The Life" just slayed! Brought my 18 year old son, he was thoroughly amazed! Good time had by all.

  • Fabulous, Fabulous, Fabulous, Fabulous, Fabulous.

by PapaBear415 on 4/17/10Nob Hill Masonic Auditorium - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

There were approximately 3,000 people in the Masonic Centre on Nob Hill last night, (which means that 4,270,000 missed the concert of a lifetime), and I am betting every single one will remember this night for the rest of their lives. I know I will. Beck was masterful, the band was tight and inventive at the same time, the sound crew excelled. The master played like the guitar god that he is, never wasting a single note, never abusing that ground-breaking, innovative technique that is his own. He is simply a virtuoso who knows his sound and produces it to stunning effect on every single number. The man has few words, and frankly doesn't need them. It was a priviledge to be there.

  • Jeff Beck

by Docchames on 4/17/10Nob Hill Masonic Auditorium - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

A true Rock Relic ! A premium virtuoso. Never a sell out to commercialism. Fateful to his craft. Seemingly effortless either with a pic or his fingers....all over the neck.

  • virtuoso at the guitar

by yasgin on 4/17/10Nob Hill Masonic Auditorium - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

first off, masonic center at nob hill has great acoustics and is an intimate venue. third time seeing jeff beck, first time at the warfield, second time at the fox in oakland. this show was the best sounding of the three. as to the music, set list was great going from hard rock to standards played by the one and only jeff beck. new drummer michael narada walden brought a deeper sound, an interesting counterpoint to vinnie colaiuta more nimble but still powerful drumming. i personally missed tal wilkenfeld on bass, her pastorious like playing worked better with jeff's guitar. new bassist rhonda smith did have deep chops, but her poppier bass style sometimes overwhelmed the sound of the music. her vocal adds were a plus, however. it seemed this time there was no featured vocalist, to do 'people get ready', the band did it as an instrumental number which was great, but with the mike set up there in front, it seemed that they had planned for a vocalist. overall, an outstanding show jeff beck does not disappoint, he plays enough of his regular stuff while incorporating new things like his version of 'nessum dorma' towards the end of his set. and again, the masonic is a great place to see a show.

  • Jeff Beck / Nob Hill msonic Auditorium / SF, CA

by 40YearFan on 4/17/10Nob Hill Masonic Auditorium - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

3100 fans from 12 to 70 what more can you say, Oh, two encores. I have been going to show all over the country since 1966 and this was one of the best. Jeff Beck is a true artist, he doesn't just play guitar, he makes the guitar talk and come to life. It was well worth the wait and if I ever get a chance will go to see him again and again.

  • Excellent show by a rock god!

by larryf on 4/17/10Nob Hill Masonic Auditorium - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

So there he was...Jeff Beck...rock god....at exactlty 9PM sauntering out onto the stage...Cool!.....we were like 20 feet from the stage, to the left of the stage, watching his backside while he played, but what the heck....20 feet away. Occasionally he'd turn around and glance our way...crowd goes crazy!!..haha!ha!....I'm not sure what song he started with..I think I recognized Freeway Jam.....He did 'People Get Ready...'Wanna Take you higher'.....Naranda Michael Walden the drummer is awesome....His bass player was awesome...he had a couple of keyboardist..they were cool....He did 'Somewhere over the Rainbow', and after the second encore he played 'Goodbye Pork Pie Hat'...my favorite song he does...thank you... Overall, it was very cool!!....Packed hose...

  • JEFF BECK IN OAKLAND 2009

    by DETROITPOET77 on 4/12/10FOX THEATRE - OAKLANDRating: 5 out of 5

long story short.... ALL MUSICIANS must immediately turn in their instruments! They must turn them over to the THE MINISTRY OF CULTURE.....to be disposed in the Vacant Foundries in Pittsburgh & melted down into other viable chunks of metal to be utilized for by Crucible Sculptress into other viable ART FORMS. This wasn't music, it was some other ENTITY that just came alive and enveloped me......at other concerts you only hear notes and beats.....this was another beast.....like a musical damn BLOB......... There is no comparison in modern times! After going through every emotion known to man in the first three songs i was thereafter emotionally drained. My brain froze went into distant memories. His hands were playing on parts of the fret board designed for LOW sounds and I am hearing hummingbirds! His hand is on the frets for the high notes & I am hearing Whale songs. Chords were making me laugh out loud like I was at Robin Williams morphing into Mork....flat out mime jokes.......but the most amazing aspect....was the music penetrating my damn bones....like a Detroit's January Wind Chilled Northerly....but NOT JUST THAT.....& with an UPSHOT energy drink... I actually felt the notes in my fingertips...the very tips of my fingers were vibrating & tingling & stinging (yup stinging like a Pete Townsend Windmill!)at the same frequency as the notes....the exact frequency as the notes! I have NEVER had that happen in my life! At first I was like thinking it was just a nerve thing....and then i just listened to my body respond & it was REAL! If I wasn't innately holy I would have freaked out....... Oh.....and smoked my cigar before the concert at a bus stop on Broadway......got up.....walked a block.....and who was getting out of their car.....none other than TAL! i came about 10 feet from her.....closer than anyone was in the concert.....she was with some guys so i left her alone......so she wouldn't be bugged by some crazed fan! We were standing on the same corner! I was just thinking I would run into her.....like someone mentioned on his web site blog the other day.....i had just read that....and it was happening to me.....this fan ran into Tal right before the show right outside the place.....it foretold what i was about to experience.......pure chance?! I don't think so! WOW! I am converted!
