Rick James was much more than a Super Freak

    by Jack on 4/5/24

Please go see this show!! Amazing fun music that crossed genres. I do not want to spoil surprises but Rick James was certainly more than just Punk Funk. The show builds up anticipation and hits hard when Rick discovers his Funk Soul!! Loved the costumes too!!! My family thoroughly enjoyed this show. There are complex adult themes but appropriate or 15 years old and above. Je'Caryous Johnson directed a Super Freaky Fun time and I will go see anything he produces in the future!! Stokley killed it as the Rick James, while the younger “Ricky” James was played by Kobe Brown with a mesmerizing performance!!!

    Lip sync

by AJ on 4/5/24Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

Performers gave it their all, but the sound system was so bad that the show should've been canceled. First and last time we'll be going to that venue

    Awesome

by Nate on 4/3/24Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

I thought this event was awesome and I learned something about Rick James that I never knew. The show was very exciting and educational. Everyone was amazed that the person who played Lionel Richie looked so much like him. The down side was when I bought the program guide it di not include a picture of that individual. I would love to see more shows like this.

    Great but not perfect

by Kevin on 4/3/24Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

I grew up a lover of Rick James's work and I am a fan of Stokely of Mint Condition who performed as Rick James. So it was a complete no-brainer for me to attend the play. Great play and great performances but there were issues with the sound. Certain parts of the play that the audience could not hear the vocals. But other than that, I enjoyed the play.

    Good experience

by Melly Mel on 4/3/24Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

I liked the show. I am huge fan of Rick James and I felt like Stokley was the PERFECT choice to play Rick! Only criticism that I have were the microphone and sound. If that is correct the show would be an A++++.

Technical Difficulties made the performance hard to enjoy

by Cobbie on 4/3/24Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

Going in I was up for the play. Rick James’s origin story was really compelling. The songs that Rick James wrote, produced & preformed were all that. The microphone problems throughout the play really made the play feel longer than it actually was. If I could make a suggestion it would be to use handheld microphones because they would be historically accurate as well as technically reliable. Also I would cut down on the Lionel Richie song & insert that Rick produced Eddie Murphy’s album(“party all the time”)thus the Charlie Murphy stories. The play could be a hit if they make some edits. Shout out to Ty, Rick’s daughter, Stokley Williams & the Lady who was an original Mary James Girl (Sorry I forgot your name). Thank you for sharing Rick’s story with us. When you’ve made the corrections bring the play back for a redux.

    This was not it

by SimmD on 4/2/24Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

This was by far the worst experience I have had at a play. The acting was terrible, the sound was bad. It was just an all around bad show. I was expecting top tier as I did with New Jack City, but it didn’t meet expectations at all. I hope this was just this one show and that some other city gets better. But this was definitely not worth the $170.00 I paid. Highly disappointed.

    Terrible Show

by Nika on 4/2/24Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

The sound was awful. Stokley was not singing and he was the main reason for going to the show. The show was nothing like New Jack City's production. Disappointed to say the least.

Rick James back to life !!!!

by NM on 4/2/24Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

All actors and singers were amazing especially stokley outstanding !!!! reason for 4 stars was stokley mic was going in and out during his singing performance other that was great and will definitely go to another play

    Hmmmm it wasn’t terrible

by MrMrJ on 4/2/24Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

So overall the show was enjoyable, with that being said I feel like it was to long, there were people falling asleep in the row I was in. Also there were microphone issues throughout the show, And I was somewhat let down by Stokely singing as Rick James or lack there off. And there was a lot of great singing, the mom character, the younger Rick James character and the young lady who played Tenna Marie was amazing. But I definitely wouldn’t have paid as much for tickets based on this performance

Story was interesting but production lacking

by Maurice on 4/2/24Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

Microphones did not work for many important dialog scenes or the most important songs. Really killed much of the impact.

    A 'MUST SEE EVENT'!!

by The 'Showman' on 4/2/24Shea's Performing Arts Center - Buffalo

Over the last ten years, I have traveled the country attending numerous concerts, live musicals and plays and this is "The BEST SHOW"that I have seen!! I'm not being bias because I live in and attended the show in Rick James hometown. (Buffalo NY) I can write a huge column on how great the show is, but my advice to you is to see it for yourself. You WON'T BE DISSAPOINTED!!

    BAD SOUND!

    by Yameka on 3/30/24

The production was horrible! The main character's microphone was shorted out! The show was stopped 3 times all before the first 20 minutes! I wanted a refund!
