About

"NEW JACK CITY LIVE, transports audiences to metropolis-Harlem, NY where they bear witness to the journey of the infamous Nino Brown, a drug lord who, when caught in the crossfires of the dangerous drug game, must decide what's most important: friendship, money, or total domination. Balancing betrayal between friends, lovers, and ultimately generational hardships, this riveting rendition of the time-honored movie will have everyone leaving the theatre wondering "Am I my brother's keeper?"

Set to the soundtrack of some of the most quintessential songs from the film, NEW JACK CITY LIVE will give audiences across the nation an opportunity to relive all their favorite, intense, heart-pounding moments from the blockbuster movie as they experience classic theater storytelling as shared through the culturally astute lens of four-time national championship playwright and NAACP Trailblazer Award recipient, Je'Caryous Johnson."

I would like to say that I really enjoyed the play. The cast did a great job. Treach did an awesome job playing Nino. Allen Payne of course did awesome playing his original character. Flex as pookie was to funny. Wish they would have done 2 shows in Jacksonville fl. Im glad i got a chance to experience the talents of the cast as they recaptured the movie as a great play.

The show itself was great! The producers did a great job of re-enacting the movie….everything lined up perfectly and there were a few comedy scenes that I really enjoyed! I would love to see other shows from this group

    Understanding Art

    by Tasha on 5/1/23

The play was done very well. The work that goes into pulling off such a huge lift definitely showed. Continuing to push through issues and Situations that were beyond your control show’s extreme professionalism. The audio was not in the greatest shape. But bringing 2023 technology to a building that is from the 1800’s can pose a challenge. All of the actors and singers did amazing. And I hope next time you will come to Sacramento. Great Job!

    Unfortunately left during intermission

    by Mel on 4/28/23Paramount Theatre-Oakland - Oakland

Sound quality was very poor. We could barely hear the actors. And too many people were allowed to walk in waaaaaaay past the start of the show. They were literally walking in and standing in the aisles an hour into the show. Too distracting!

    Eh

by L0vely11 on 4/27/23Orpheum Theatre - Los Angeles

It was an okay experience. My friends and I paid for close seats and had to sit in the very back because the usher was unable to locate our seats. First he told us we were in the wrong area and our seats were on the other side. We go to the other side and was told we were un the wrong section and that our seats were on the side we just came from. Mind you, the show had already started. We show the ushers our tickets and she explained the seating, letting us know that three of us would be on one side and one of our friends would be sitting alone because her seat was an odd number smh. So we were seated in the very back so that our party wouldn't be separated and because the older usher couldn't find our seats.

    I want my money back

    by Jean on 4/26/23Paramount Theatre-Oakland - Oakland

The actor's did a good job. The sound system was Terrible!!! The actor's microphones worked on and off. .When there was music while the actors were speaking you couldn't hear their voices clearly. The adjustments to the storyline was okay, but not what I expected, particularly the 2nd act.

The play was great, however the microphone went out a few times. That’s my only complaint

The show was great. Just wish Flex Alexander and Big daddy Kane was there I really wanted to see them. But the other 2 actors (fill-ins) were great.

    Excellent production and cast

    by Jenn on 4/26/23Paramount Theatre-Oakland - Oakland

The show was fabulous!!! We really enjoyed the sets for all the scenes. You couldn't have picked better actors for all the roles. The costumes and music were on point. I do have to comment that the Paramount Theatre needs to make major improvements in their sound system. The mics weren't working or would constantly cut in and out. I am glad I sat up in the front so I could at least hear when the actors were speaking but those in the back missed out on a lot. For that I make zero stars to the Paramount Theatre. I highly recommend attending this show......well worth it!

    Worst play ever

    by N on 4/26/23Paramount Theatre-Oakland - Oakland

The play did not start on time 30 minutes behind schedule time. The sound was horrible you could not hear anything they had problems with their microphones the audience had to keep yelling to turn the mics up. The male singers could not sing at all. The whole show was a waste of money and my time.

    by Jackie on 4/26/23Paramount Theatre-Oakland - Oakland

I think it would’ve been better had they not had the microphone issue. It was true to the movie and great comedic energy

    My Humble Opinion

    by Tina on 4/26/23Paramount Theatre-Oakland - Oakland

The play was awesome. Je'Caryious captured New Jack in a way for those who were too young to remember or were not born yet, could still follow along with a complete understanding of the movie. Allen Payne was a pleasure to see, but it was Treach and Pookie who kept me entertained!!!! Now as for the audience, Oaklanders need to learn how to sit and respect art, all the movement that was going on throughout the show was shameful, esp. because these people were full grown adults acting like children, with the constant up and down disruption.

    The microphones were TERRIBLE

    by Play on 4/26/23Paramount Theatre-Oakland - Oakland

It would've been very nice if you could hear what they were saying. Microphones were either going in and out or just completely out.

    No expectations

    by M1y on 4/26/23Paramount Theatre-Oakland - Oakland

When we bought tickets ($100 each) we didn’t expect a Broadway show. It was for those who were living in adolescence early 90’s. A little slow in parts. Overall something to do for date night.
