About

JD McPherson In Concert

A JD McPherson concert is a rolling, tumbling, stomping, rumbling rock 'n' roll revival. When McPherson and his band hit the stage, his old-school R&B and first-gen rock 'n' roll influences really come to the fore, helping to make every show a party.

With his fire-breathing band helping him amp up the excitement, McPherson generates the kind of sound that makes it impossible for fans to sit still. So don't be surprised if people are jumping around and bopping up and down, even if it's a sit-down venue.

Whether McPherson and the boys are banging out his albums' most popular tunes — like "North Side Gal," "Let the Good Times Roll," and "Why Lady Why" — or serving up the occasional cover of classic tunes from some of his heroes, such as Nick Lowe's "Rome Wasn't Built in a Day," Billy Boy Arnold's "I Wish You Would," or Chuck Berry's "Run Rudolph Run," it's impossible to resist their good-time vibes.

JD McPherson Background

JD McPherson started stirring up buzz in 2012 with his debut album, Signs and Signifiers, on Rounder Records, though the record first appeared on a smaller label two years earlier. Once a wider audience caught on to McPherson's raw, roots-conscious mix of 1950s/early '60s R&B, rock 'n' roll, and blues influences, McPherson's debut made its way to the top of Billboard's Heatseekers chart.

Since McPherson grew up in a rural part of Oklahoma, free from the distractions of city life, he spent his youth focusing on the old-school sounds he loved and learned how to channel them into something all his own. His second record, 2015's Let the Good Times Roll, pierced the Top 20 on the Rock Albums chart, earning him even more attention. For his third LP, 2017's Undivided Heart & Soul, McPherson modernized his approach a bit while still staying in touch with his musical roots.

    Somehow better than last time!

by DJTastyCakes on 3/2/15Bowery Ballroom - New York

I saw these guys play at the Bell House in Brooklyn in the summer of 2014, and they tore the roof off the joint. Improbably, they were even better this time around, perhaps because the new record hasn't been out very long. The band members are all very skilled, and they've been playing together for some time, and they are sharp.

Band was great. A lot of heart . Never boring. Up beat thru out the show. It was a throw back to when Rock & Roll was starting out and the energy never stopped.

    Rip-Snortin' Good Time!

by Anonymous on 8/20/13Birchmere - Alexandria

JD McPherson and gang absolutely tore it up! It's so inspiring to see people so passionate about their music. If you weren't at least bouncing along to that "sweet rock & roll," I'm concerned for your well being. I was so happy to be part of such a responsive audience especially learning that this was the opening show for their tour; McPherson thanked us profusely. Really, really spectacular performance!

JD McPherson Is A Must See!

    by Suecat1122 on 8/19/13Birchmere - Alexandria

Venue was great. Band even better! Thoroughly enjoyed Andy Paxon as well. He is a young, talented musician who is definitely going places. I'm not sure what I have to say about JD McPherson will do them justice. The band is PHENOMENAL! So nice to see the recurrence of Jazz, Big Band, Blues and Swing. Best live performance I have seen in years.

Great music - almost a great show

by bluesartist on 8/19/13Birchmere - Alexandria

JD is a terrific songwriter and player, with a great voice and an ability to grab the backbone of old time rock and roll and give it a new shape. He's got a really good band - everyone is a standout, but his bass player absolutely has both the chops and the style. The only downside to the show was JD's persona. He never really looks like he is having a good time. He plays guitar like he is doing it because he can't hit anybody. He needs to learn that most of the members of an audience aren't going to have fun unless they see the performer having fun. That said - I would definitely go see him again.

JD McPherson is the real deal - Awesome+++++

by 1954Steve on 10/11/12The Horseshoe Tavern - Toronto

My whole family were so looking forward to this performance. We were not disappointed...JD McPherson told the audience he was suffering from a cold - I cannot wait to see him - and his magnificent backing musicians when JD is fully fit!! I doubt any one in the audience noticed anything other than a VERY highly accomplished musician with a range of Genre that makes it very difficult for anybody to 'pigeon hole' him. The range was (I believe) Rock and Roll, Rockabilly, Country, Jazz, Swing - with a few more thrown in. He was exactly what I was expecting - AMAZING. Please come back to Toronto JD and bring all those musicians with you. The venue was also extraordinary - the feeling of closeness to the performers was amazing... If JD did have a cold - then we will all probably catch it!! This guy - and Jimmy Sutton are going to be huge. Take every opportunity to attend this performance - just to say one day that I saw JD when he was playing relatively small venues. I am counting the days until we next see him live.

    McPherson was amazing!

by Koturi83 on 10/7/12Duck Room at Blueberry Hill - St Louis

It's been said that JD McPherson's music "is engineered to revive your faith in rock & roll." It's true. What a great entertainer, great band, phenomenal music! Only complaint: the opening act (which wasn't good) played for an hour.

JD McPherson and band rocked it!

by Swillsy on 6/29/12Fine Line Music Cafe - Minneapolis

On Fire! JD McPherson puts on one hell of a show. Stage presence, vocals, instrumentals, and energy were all top notch. The night opened with one great act, and finished with a bang so loud you'd think the 50's had already taken over! Can't wait to see JD again at the Minnesota State Fair.

J.D. McPherson at the Brighton Music Hall

by SCrafts on 5/12/12Brighton Music Hall - Brighton, Massachusetts

I first got wind of J.D. last year. The former Oklahoma art teacher has been making waves in the rockabilly music world. J.D. writes, sings, and plays the guitar. Jimmy Sutton plays the upright bass and produced J.D.'s record, "Signs and Signifiers" (which originally came out on Jimmy's label "Hi Style Records". The band has now signed with Rounder and the CD has been re-released on that label). Alex Hall, who played drums on the record, was the keyboardist at this show. Additionally, there was a drummer and sax player. Opening the show was a delightful young band called "Lucius". Although J.D. is small in stature, he is a giant when he gets on stage. He is soft spoken, but can belt out a tune as well as any of the R&B greats from the 50s. The set consisted mostly of music from his record. J.D. has a unique approach to his music, mainly consisting of original tunes. It's got a retro and familiar feeling to it but with many modern touches thrown in. With J.D. and Jimmy at the front of the stage, it was non-stop excitement and energy. The size of the club was perfect because this band clearly was playing for the very appreciative crowd. J.D. McPherson has been getting rave reviews in music publications all over the world and will be appearing on Conan in June. If you get a chance to see this band.... DO IT!

JD McPherson & Band brought down the house

by JGildy on 4/21/12Mercury Lounge - New York

Second time I've seen these guys perform and they did NOT disappoint. Raw, energetic talent and strait up FUN. They get down, they rock, they roll. Great venue for them I think- and the crowd's energy was awesome too- Only thing I'd say is it was a little cramped for dancing- which is a no brainer when you see these guys. We did anyway!!! If you don't feel like dancing at a JD McPherson show, you're clearly dead inside. LOVE this band, and great show.
