About

Jay Z 4:44 Tour

Though his musical endeavors as an artist, label exec and producer provide the foundation for Jay-Z's empire, he's also a successful serial entrepreneur. He's made his mark in the fashion world with his Rocawear clothing line, and he's branched into the sports world -- first as a part owner of the Brooklyn Nets of the NBA, then as the owner of the Roc Nation sports and entertainment agency. As he rapped in one song, "I'm not a businessman / I'm a business, man."

Jay-Z's rise came from humble beginnings. He and his three siblings grew up in a housing project in Brooklyn's Bedford Stuyvesant neighborhood, and he was raised by his single mother after his father left when he was 11 years old. His early lyrics refer to a life rife with gun violence and drug dealing, and he's claimed that he turned to hip hop as a way out of poverty.

Carter began to get noticed as a rapper in 1989, when he joined an older performer and mentor named Jaz-O to record a song titled "The Originators," which landed them on an episode of  Yo! MTV Raps. Around this time, Carter began to perform as Jay-Z out of respect for Jaz-O and as a nod to his childhood nickname "Jazzy."

After bouncing around in relative obscurity, Jay-Z and two friends, Damon Dash and Kareem Burke, took things into their own hands by creating their own label, Roc-A-Fella Records, in 1996. Jay-Z's first album, "Reasonable Doubt," was released that June, and immediately established him as a star-in-the-making.

From there, it seemed Jay-Z could do no wrong. He's sold more than 50 million albums worldwide, amassed 17 Grammy Awards, and has become known as one of the greatest rappers ever. He married Beyonce Knowles in 2008, and Forbes has ranked the pair Hollywood's top-earning couple.
Jay-Z's concerts regularly sell out, with fans scooping up tickets to see a true living legend who can command an audience with or without a huge stage production. In fact, his early Magna Carter shows were one of his most stripped-down productions, but nonetheless generated consistent raves from fans and critics alike.

    Jay-Z was amazing!

by Jkinzly on 10/11/09The Bank of Kentucky Center - Highland Heights

After seeing Kayne West last year, I assumed this show would be over-produced and Jay-Z wouldn't be personable. Having said that, we still went because we love his music. I was pleasantly surprised with his stage presence and professionalism, while still captivating the audience with his amazing beats and lyrics. I loved the live band that played along with him too! The lights and background were also amazing. Overall - this show gets an A+ in my book!

Can't wait til the next one!

by MissMonie on 10/11/09The Bank of Kentucky Center - Highland Heights

As expected, Jigga did his thing! He gets even better every time I see him. I am amazed at what he can do alone on the stage and keep the crowd hyped and on their feet! My husband and I have been waiting for him to come close to Cincy and he finally did! We would love to see what he does in the NYC.

by OneLeezy on 10/11/09The Bank of Kentucky Center - Highland Heights

I had high expectations for this concert and Jay-Z met them all. He was on time and put on a great show. The energy in the building was amazing. The best concert I've ever been too. The sound system was great and you could hear clearly. He is the best at this craft and it showed. Worth every dollar spent.

The Greatest Rapper of All Time

by Lewis30 on 10/11/09The Bank of Kentucky Center - Highland Heights

This was a great show!!! N.E.R.D. did a great job of getting the crowd hype. Jay Z and his band took performing to another level. However, as a grown man, the only issue I had was the enourmous amount of weed being smoked within the crowd. Nevertheless, I would go again, even if I had to endure another 'contact."

by Desiree156 on 10/11/09Bryce Jordan Center - University Park

Jay-Z was amazing in concert!!! He is the GREATEST! My seats were really close to the stage, so I had a GREAT experience! I cannot describe in words how it felt to be there. He performed all of his greatest hits...even though there were so many more that I would have wanted him to perform...but the night had to end. I am so glad I had opportunity to see him in concert...it was once in a lifetime event! If I could, I would definitely go see him again!!!! I luv you Jay-Z!!!!!! :)

Jay-Z put on a great show but if you have been to a Hov show before you will expect a lot more from him. He didnt do one song from Reasonable Doubt, Vol.1 ,Blueprint 2, and American Gangster. It is a ton of classics on all those albums that he nornally performs, all in all it was a great show, Ive come to expect more from Hov.

Jay Z and N.E.R.D. were awesome!!

by MamaMia3 on 10/11/09The Bank of Kentucky Center - Highland Heights

We really enjoyed the concert. Both N.E.R.D. and Jay Z put on a fabulous show. I was amazed at how fast JayZ could rap, and wondered when he found time to breathe! He never stopped, only walked off the stage for a little sip of somethin once. I love N.E.R.D. because even tho Pharell has hit it big, they are still keepin it real. They reminded me of a cool azz garage band. They even invited people up on stage. I loved the whole show!

    JAY Z WAS GREAT!!

by TB81AB on 10/11/09The Bank of Kentucky Center - Highland Heights

The concert was the best rap concert I have ever attended. Jay z was GREAT!! You could understand all the words he said (with some rappers they tend to scream at you) He was interpersonal with the crowd, and he did ALL his greatest hits, even some not released from previous albums. Tickets were afforable. I WOULD GO AGAIN IF I COULD!!!!

    Awesome

by Anonymous on 10/11/09The Bank of Kentucky Center - Highland Heights

This was, by far, the best concert I've ever attended. Jay delivers a live performance unrivaled by any other rap performer. He was engaging and funny. Two great aspects stand out; first he performed songs from almost all of his albums (third song on the set list was U Don't Know from the original Blueprint). Second, he cut the beat and freestyled several times reminding us that he doesn't need elaborate production to show off his musical skill. The show was high energy, the dual drummers were fantastic and his hype man was great. The best surprise was N.E.R.D. performing a lot from the Seeing Sounds album that dropped earlier this year.

    Unforgetable, unbelieveable!

by JonnycBaby on 10/11/09Bryce Jordan Center - University Park

I paid $30 for student tickets to see what I consider the greatest rapper the world has known. This concert was unreal. Jay-Z did a great job, i can't believe he is nearly 39, I would have never guessed with how energetic he is. I'll probably never forget this concert, it was so inspirational. The best part was the ending where he just gave so much love to the crowd. Jay-Z just started calling out fans by what they were wearing. He even let one young lady fan sing. He ended off the show to a crowd of college students with "Forever Young". It was a perfect ending. The best part was Jay-Z giving so much love and respect to the crowd, and saying how he really appreciated everyone. This is what makes him the greatest rapper, he never forgets where he came from.
