Japanese Breakfast In Concert

Japanese Breakfast was never meant to be a full-time musical project, but Michelle Zauner's fuzzy, dreamy indie pop has captured too many ears and hearts to call it quits. Instead, the Eugene, Oregon-based artist continues to push her solo project into new sonic territory while taking it to stages around the world.

The first thing to know: Zauner is not Japanese. In creating her moniker, she's stated that she wanted to combine something very American (breakfast) with something Americans find exotic (Japanese). She was actually born in Seoul, South Korea, and grew up in Eugene, where she started learning the piano at 5 years old and the guitar at 15.

She then headed to Pennsylvania to study creative writing and film at Bryn Mawr College. It was here that she began turning her musical interests into reality with a solo project called Little Girl, Big Spoon and, in 2011, as frontwoman for the emo band Little Big League.

But already by 2013, Zauner felt creatively uninspired. So, along with friend Rachel Gagliardi, she decided to write, record, and post one song every day for the month of June onto a blog. The result was the 30-track June, featuring 28 originals and two covers (PAWS' "Sore Tummy" and Liz Phair's "Chopsticks").

Around this same time, she put Little Big League on hold and moved back to Oregon to help care for her mother, who had been diagnosed with cancer. In her home state, she found comfort in music, particularly after her mother passed away in 2014. She began writing what would become her lo-fi debut album, Psychopomp. It officially released in April 2016 on Yellow K Records. Soon after, she was signed to indie label Dead Oceans and set out on tour around the U.S., U.K., and Canada.

A little more than a year later, she returned with her sophomore album, Soft Sounds from Another Planet, a more expansive set featuring spacey electronics and crisper indie pop, all topped with Zauner's melancholic beauty. Following the release, she set out for a lengthy world tour, including stops at big festivals like Coachella and Bonnaroo.

  • Incredible

by Conner on 5/14/25Brooklyn Paramount - BrooklynRating: 5 out of 5

Japanese Breakfast was absolutely phenomenal. From the performance itself to the stage design, the show was a fantastic experience overall. It was especially cool seeing it at the Brooklyn Paramount which is a beautiful venue that contributed well to the overall aesthetic. Ginger Root, the opener, was also fantastic and put on one of the best and most entertaining performances I’ve ever seen — insanely creative, funny, and well-executed.

  • Great

Great band, loved the acoustics and the Michelle is great as always. Great show opener Ginger Root too. They really played it off!

  • Mellow

by Jeff on 5/10/25MGM Music Hall at Fenway - BostonRating: 3 out of 5

JB has very talented musicians, led by Michelle who has a strong stage presence. The crowd loved her energy, which was most evident when they played older songs. The new album, as the title suggests, is more low key. New tracks dominated the set, making for a mellow event.

  • Great Performance, So-So Sound

by CF on 5/10/25MGM Music Hall at Fenway - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

The performance was great from beginning to end, but the sound quality could have been better. The first two numbers were quieter ones and the sound was OK, but the third song (Honey Water) was a more upbeat number and the vocals were almost impossible to make out, and that's how it stayed until sometime around the middle of the show, when things were better but still not ideal—overall a little too loud and slightly distorted to my ears. I've been to many other shows at the MGM Music Hall in which the sound quality was quite good, so I know it's not just the venue. Advice to sound engineer: maybe take off your headphones sometimes and just listen to what everyone else is hearing. The opener, Ginger Root, was also great, but again, the sound could have been mixed better and was a little muddy sounding.

  • Fantastic performance and opener

by Megan C on 5/7/25The Salt Shed Indoors (Shed) - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

The set design, energy level, stage presence, and vocals of Japanese Breakfast was so memorable and amazing. She really know what she is doing. Her performance was still upbeat and enlivening despite many of her songs being sad and slower. Her opener, Ginger Root, was also so incredibly dynamic and fun.

  • Sonic beauty

There really is no way to describe how Japanese Breakfast feels and sounds live. Don't get me wrong, their recorded works are beautiful and get me in ways. I can't describe, but their sound live?! Immaculate and precious. Will see them for every tour I can. :)

  • Great show, not great sound

by All Ears on 5/3/25The Fillmore Charlotte - CharlotteRating: 4 out of 5

Went to see Japanese Breakfast and was treated with Ginger Root! First time at the Fillmore and I loved the venue. Reminds me of some smaller ones in NYC and Boston. Ginger Root was new to me and I was very pleased. Echos of Talking Heads and great fun with the live video, plus the sound mixing was pro. I love JB when I hear them recorded, but the sound was really uneven; sometime the instruments drowned out her voice and other times, the opposite. And not clear. Energy for days, though, so you can't help but dance and sing along. By the way... it was soooo cold in there, even with all the people. Good thing I bought a hoodie at the merch table. Overall, fun was had and the crowd was a bunch of cool people. Much love, just not happy with JB's sound mixing.

  • Japanese breakfast With Ginger Root.

Great venue if you have premium seating, you have to get there early to jockey for a spot great sounds and great view from all around the salt shed

  • I’m never gonna forget this

by Ilse on 5/3/25The Salt Shed Indoors (Shed) - ChicagoRating: 5 out of 5

The attention to security was amazing. The band was fantastic and I’ll never forget it. The lighting was fantastic and the overall vibes were great. I went to the Wednesday show and the Friday show. Also I was able to hand off a handmade rug to JBrekkies crew which made my month! My only complaint being the check inand safety check. For a sold out show, when there are people waiting for 7+ hours the way that the line should release is in the order of how the people waited. And then after the first 50 people then open up the 3 lanes as a free for all. Both times, people that didn’t wait the full 8 hours as we did got better views. Like at least the first 10 people should get to go in without a problem. Also the 1st night the security bag check went really fast on a day I had multiple things in hand. The second day I literally only had my phone. I was questioned about why it was the only thing I had and the older gentleman made our line go through the bars multiple times including myself. Therefore pushing me to not be able to get the standing space I was hoping for. Also the security came to get us from the outside lane late and let a giant group of people get in front of us when they showed up at the time of the show not the many hours earlier. Letting them almost think they were getting early access. If there is such a thing as early access. Let me know! I’ll pay it. I’m 5 feet tall and almost never get to enjoy concerts because I can’t see which is the reason I wait so long. Also with not having screens for the back of the room to see- I couldn’t trust that I’d see it from any angle.

  • Aches and drunks

by GenGen on 4/30/25The Fillmore Charlotte - CharlotteRating: 4 out of 5

Seeing Ginger Root for the first time was magnificent; the energy and clever jokes were absolutely delightful. Japanese Breakfast was as expected, dreamy vibes at an all time high 😌 My only complaint( minus the one star) is the venue. Maybe I’m just too old to be standing in one place, shoulder to shoulder with strangers for three hours. I even made sure to wear my comfy shoes. There was also a few people that were being inappropriately drunk, spilling their drinks on the floor and our feet :/ pushing us and talking loudly (it’s a concert not a coffee shop) If I’m financially able to purchase the “seating” section, I’ll definitely buy them in a heartbeat. TIL next time

  • Great concert!

First time to listen Japanese Breakfast. Great concert with nice set up.

  • A Blind Guys POV

    by thecaneman430 on 4/29/25Tabernacle - AtlantaRating: 4 out of 5

There were too many lights on the Jbreakie performance. I am a blind/ vi person, and the lights are painful. Let’s chill out with that, please! The price of merch was a bit much. $45 for a T-shirt is outrageous when the other band is charging $25. Other than those gripes, the show was awesome! It was a lot of fun and worth the price of the ticket.

  • Spectacle

by Hazel on 4/29/25Tabernacle - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

Very amicable staff and crowd was welcoming. Ginger Root brought some funk to open up the show and Japanese Breakfast brought the energy and beauty of music to their performance. Immense aura!!

  • Traveled 6 hours for this show, well worth it.

by Ryan on 4/27/25South Side Ballroom - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

Perfect set list, band was amazing, stage props and lighting were magnificent. If I could do it over I would have been first In line and put us right by the stage or at this venue spent the extra money for the rail seats. My wife at 5’ couldn’t see the stage at all so we kept moving around to get a better view. overall fantastic experience.

  • Perfection

by dj on 4/27/25South Side Ballroom - DallasRating: 5 out of 5

What a great show! Ginger Root, the opener, did not disappoint. A good portion of the audience was here to see them. Their quirky songs and live video were a lot of fun, and you could tell they are genuine JB fans. Michelle Z and JB killed it. They opened with Here is Someone and Orlando in Love, and they hit everything from Melancholy. The highlights for me were Magic Mountain and Paprika. Intensity and energy. The lighting and “big ol’ clam” made for great visuals. Sound was clean and the whole show was polished.

  • Punch up the middle

by JDallasScene on 4/27/25South Side Ballroom - DallasRating: 3 out of 5

Anticipating a Japanese Breakfast performance comes with unknowns. The creativity, the pure vocal, the crowd enthusiasm can be tempered by the sameness, the consistency in key and tempo in execution that approaches blandness. All of this was present in the Dallas show with the opening revealing what is good about JP, the middle moving you to disinterest, and the end/encore having you scream “where has this JP been the last 45 minutes.” Exasperating but still worth it.

Outstanding venue. Crowd was fantastic. Japanese Breakfast is tremendous. First time to see. Perfect show. I've listened to them on Pandora all weekend. In my happy place

  • Concert Great… audience not so much

by J Money on 11/3/23The Fillmore Philadelphia - PhiladelphiaRating: 5 out of 5

The Japanese Breakfast concert was great. We paid extra for VIP but stood next to incredibly rude people who yacked loudly through the entire show. What is the protocol for dealing with this? We politely asked them to go to the bar because they were loud but they refused. They acted like we were the rude people when we just wanted to enjoy the music but they wouldn’t stop talking/shouting to hear each other above the music. After the show they verbally confronted us on our way out and “rationalized” that they paid the same amount to be there. Not sure if that meant that they had every right to be obnoxious? Sounds like they confused a concert ticket for a cover charge at a bar. I feel like the Filmore should be responsible for keeping their guests’ noise levels to a reasonable level. Perhaps they could patrol a little. It almost got ugly but we walked away. It left a really bad taste. Especially since we paid more to be out of the crowd.

  • LOUSY OPENING

by breakfast fan 1 on 11/3/23The Fillmore Philadelphia - PhiladelphiaRating: 2 out of 5

our headliner was excellent, fun and the lyrics sounded great. all in costume for Halloween night too. the opening act we THOUGHT was coming canceled, and we were not updated beforehand in any way... and the replacement band was AWFUL. I would have arrived late just to muss that. also the warm up comedian was equally terrible. not funny, raunchy, gross and demeaning to the audience.
