She had not sang in a while, but you could not tell! This was the first time I have seen her and I was amazed at the purity of her vocals!
The best voice of her generation gave us a simple but simply terrific recital. Backed by a trio of Maestros on piano, bass, and drums, her voice was an orchestra of vocal intruments. From Scat to Standard she was flawless. The audience was a little meek and her repartee was limited but witty. She is a sexy and sensous Scorpio who seems to truly "feel" the songs as she sings them. The producers of the show need a lesson or two in promoting a Jazz concert. The advertising was thin and the marketing effort was nearly non-existent. This in a University town where she could have filled up a venue thrice this size. Tip to the local producers: make a buzz when you bring a star to town. I hope that she comes back. I will still try to catch her in NYC or LA or anywhere in between next time I get the chance.
I did not much about Jane and it was great a surprise. Extraordinary voice. How can she sing like that so easily.
Jane Monheit at her best. I highly recommend seeing her at the Birchmere!
The Birchmere is one of the premier venues in the country and Jane Monheit is one of the premier vocalists. Not only does she have a beautiful voice, incredible range, and complete control, she pays attention to the lyrics, giving them real, personal meaning. And on top of all that, she interacts with the audience in a sincere, relaxed manner. It's so refreshing to see a vocalist that doesn't rely on a troupe of dancers, glitzy costumes and pyrotechnics. She just sings with her trio of piano, bass, and drums. She is not to be missed.
Short but very satisfying set at the Birchmere! Jane is funny, self-deprecating, thoroughly professional and yet relaxed. Her band, especially bass player Neal Miner, are tight and talented, and Jane's voice is rich and warm and fluid; her vocal improvisations are melodic and musically interesting (three of the four people in our group are musicians, and found many reasons to appreciate this evening). Arrangements (largely by pianist Michael Kanan) made familiar tunes new. Nice set list, and a performance of "Sleigh Ride" in response to an audience member's request -- very generous of Jane and the band. We'll absolutely be back when she returns to the DC area.
Great Show! Great venue, too. I loved Jane's personality. Her voice is amazing! This was our first time seeing Jane, and we'll definitely be back.
Jane Monheit and the Reading Pops lived up to every thing I expected. A fan of Jane Monheit for 9 years, this was my first chance to see and hear her live in concert. And it was good. The sound mix was off and that prevented a truly amazing event, it was good enough to be an enjoyable afternoon. When singing only with her combo and the sound problem was not there you could appreciate her amazing voice. I would do it again.
Jane was amazing! She is beautiful, does a great show and was there to meet with audience members after the show. Her voice was wonderful -what a gift.
Jane Monheit's muscial mastery and control are unarguable. However, there is little personality, emotion or creativity in her execution. She needs to take more risks stylistically and going for the big note. The RACC venue is intimate but had overbooked which required the annoyance of changed seating from what was purchased. Fortunately, the alternate seats were nearly comparable, averting disaster.
All I can say is that the concert was too short.. I mean that in the best way possible. I could listen to her and watch her work a song for hours. The full orchestra thing was ok, but my favorite is when she works with her combo. What an amazing range she has.
Jane Monheit put on a stellar display of self-confidence born of recent motherhood, scatting talent borne of music theory devotion and a jesting love of her band and audience. The repertoire was a mix or more modern pop songs off her recent record, pieces she wants to record in the future and classics from her decade-long recording career. Pianist Michael Canaan is second in star status as only his chops competed with hers. His swift and thoughtful voicings supported her on ballads and tore up solos, almost stealing Monheit's thunder. Her comic ad libs and waiting to greet fans for an autograph make her a star-in-waiting for a larger audience.
What a crystal clear voice. Set lasted about 1.5 hrs. Could have listened another 2 hours.
Monheit is an excellent singer. During her performance she displayed impressive versatility. She interpreted some jazz standards, some contemporary numbers and even a Brazilian tune. Her backing trio (bass, keyboards, drums) were all talented musicians. They have an unmistakable chemistry and a very nice sound. A consummate performer and artist, Monheit puts on an entertaining show.
Amazing voice!! Amazing talent!! Simply stunning!!! Go see her if you get the chance...if not, buy her albums! You won't be disappointed!
Jane's performance was great! Her band was the best! She sang continuously for 1-1/2 hrs; a mix of Jazz and ballads. I would have liked to have had an intermission, but that was OK. I have 3 of her CD's so I knew most of the songs; I am planning on buying her new CD soon.
My husband and I have seen Jane 5 times; she and her band never disappoint. She is so down to earth and her voice is so pure. We love her!
