Jake Shimabukuro on Tour

In a way, it’s Hawaiian ukulele player Jake Shimabukuro’s live performances that first brought him international attention — in 2006, Shimabukuro’s success skyrocketed after a video of him playing The Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” became one of YouTube’s first massively viral videos. Ever since, he’s shared his joy of music with audiences all over the world, playing songs that range from jazz and classical to rock and bluegrass. Before he blew up, Shimabukuro was signed to a label in Japan and toured the country extensively. After starting his own label and playing more U.S. shows, he’s appeared on a number of talk shows with hosts like Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Kimmel and Carson Daly. Now, Shimabukuro tours the world frequently, often leading a versatile string trio that includes guitar and bass, though he’s also been known to groove in a quartet with drums, keys and bass. Jake Shimabukuro’s current tour takes him across the U.S. as he continues to find new ways to interact with the styles that have made him the musician he is today.

Jake Shimabukuro in Concert

Jake Shimabukuro is a Hawaiian-born, fifth-generation Japanese American ukulele player who has become known as a virtuoso musician that can jam in almost any style. Born in 1976 in Honolulu, Shimabukuro received a ukulele from his mother, a musician herself, at age four. He studied with her for years, eventually entering the Roy Sakuma Studio and taking lessons from Tami Akiyami. In the 1990s, Shimabukuro would become a member of the trio Pure Heart alongside percussionist Lopaka Colón and guitarist and singer Jon Yamasato. The group’s first album, 1999’s Pure Heart, won four Na Hoku Hanohano awards — basically the Hawaiian Grammys — including Contemporary Album of the Year, Most Promising Artist, Album of the Year and Favorite Entertainment of the Year.

Shimabukuro signed with Epic Records International, a division of Sony Music Japan, in 2002. He toured in Japan and released a number of Japan-only albums. Wanting to share his music with the U.S. as well, Shimabukuro founded Hitchhike Records and soon released 2005’s Dragon, which charted at No. 5 on Billboard’s Top World Music Albums. The following year, after his YouTube success, he released Gently Weeps, which peaked at No. 2 on the Top World Music Albums. Shimabukuro has gone on to release numerous high-charting albums.

  • Jake just keeps getting better!

by Frank on 8/4/19Hoyt Sherman Place - Des MoinesRating: 5 out of 5

The music, as always, was aesthetically and technically excellent. Absolutely beautiful and compelling! This is my third time seeing Jake in person. Before the first, his Youtube videos influenced me to change from a guitar player who started with a baritone ukulele to a ukulele player who also plays the guitar. And I love playing in combos; Jake's leadership of his combo is the thing that impressed me most about this concert. Jake always expresses his appreciation of everyone who helps make his concerts happen; in a sense, he transforms them into members of his extended family. But he is going beyond that with his combo, two world class studio musicians who have been touring with Jake for awhile. These three guys are so focused on supporting the other two to go beyond their best that the results are continuously remarkable and exponentially improving. And they clearly love working together. Jake promised a Trio album in the future and I look forward to the release with extreme excitement.

Great concert by a great and very humble human being. Mr. Shimabukuro is truly a gentleman in every sense of the word, and the greatest ukulele player ever. This is my 10th time to see him, and I sincerely hope the venue has a return date for him very soon.

Jake was unbelievable! He was also so very friendly and accessible and took pictures with our family and signed a CD. Humphrey’s was a great venue.

  • Jake!

by Oh hi on 7/17/19Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

Performance was awesome! Go to see Jake Shimabukuro whenever I get the chance, whether in Hawaii or here at home in San Diego. Venue seating a bit too close with the folding chairs. Venue refreshment prices high.

  • Who Knew

by E. B. on 7/17/19Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

We had center seats ,3d row. It was amazing. The only drawback was the seating arrangements. So crammed together, the whole row had to exit for us to get into our seats. I felt like I was on an airplane flight. Everything else was super. The hotel, the dinner and the venue. I love Humphrey's..the seats no so much.

  • Awesome

This is our 2nd time taking our 8 year old ukulele-playing daughter to see Jake. Not only is Jake a talented and extremely entertaining performer (his ukulele playing is out-of-this-world awesome), his personality and positivity make him an ideal role model for all, especially for children.

  • A night with Jake

by theater mavin on 7/17/19Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

Jake and friends provide a superior entertainment experience. His music sings with the brightness and purity unrivaled by most musicians. Song selection and audience interaction make for a night of wonderful intimacy and friendship. Jake is a master by any definition. We are lucky that Humphries is one of his "homes". I'm already looking forward to the next concert.

  • Absolutely AMAZING and Talented Best Ukulele player!!

by Kukana on 7/17/19Humphreys Concerts By the Bay - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

We have been following Jake mature as an ukulele player right after he left True Heart. He used to play as a young teenager in the parking lot at Borders on Kauai, HI where we lived for 20 years and we would fly interisland to hear him annually at the Honolulu Ukulele Festival that Roy Sukuma puts on for free every July. Jake still amazes us growing in his talent of styles. The 3 some this time was outstanding! We are flying off from Point Loma to Oahu this morning to go hear him again this Sunday at 2019 Honolulu Ukulele Festival sponsored by Roy Sukuma A Hui Ho and MAHALOs to Jake!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jake is a great performance and Ukulele master! What a fun concert! Glad it was such an intimate venue... because he should be playing to larger audiences and next time I wouldn’t have such a good seat!

If you enjoy music and want to see a musician take a ukulele to it’s limit, you owe it to yourself to see Jake. Besides being the finest ukuleleist I have ever seen, he is a wonderful man who took time after the show to sign some autographs. If I could give him more stars, I would!!

  • Genius

Always amazing to see Jake play, and experiencing it in a smaller venue like the Wonder Bar made it even better!

by Roman on 3/5/19Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft LauderdaleRating: 5 out of 5

I have been a fan of Jake for about 7 years. This was my first opportunity to see him live. The venue was fantastic as it allowed for an intimate experience. The energy of Jake and his band mates was also great. Look forward to seeing them again!

  • Jake rocks!!!!

by J. H. on 2/27/19Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft LauderdaleRating: 5 out of 5

Jake's performance is outstanding. An auditory delight to hear him in person. His performance is incredible. Reasonably priced tickets. His taking time to meet with fans before and after his concert is something you don't see with other artist. He took time to talk with my son and play his ukulele with him while encouraging him to follow his passions. Very awesome. Thank you Jake!!!

  • Fantastic Concert! The YoYo Ma of the ukulele.

by O. R. on 2/26/19Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft LauderdaleRating: 5 out of 5

At first I was disappointed that it wasn't just Jake, but with the addition of the two other performers it was one of the best concerts that I have ever attended.

Do yourself a favor - find where Jake will be playing in your town and buy tickets! He’s been called the “Jimi Hendrix of the ukulele,” and it’s not an exaggeration. A great night filled with amazing, rocking, touching music played by incredible musicians.
