Jake Shimabukuro on Tour
In a way, itās Hawaiian ukulele player Jake Shimabukuroās live performances that first brought him international attention ā in 2006, Shimabukuroās success skyrocketed after a video of him playing The Beatlesā āWhile My Guitar Gently Weepsā became one of YouTubeās first massively viral videos. Ever since, heās shared his joy of music with audiences all over the world, playing songs that range from jazz and classical to rock and bluegrass. Before he blew up, Shimabukuro was signed to a label in Japan and toured the country extensively. After starting his own label and playing more U.S. shows, heās appeared on a number of talk shows with hosts like Conan OāBrien, Jimmy Kimmel and Carson Daly. Now, Shimabukuro tours the world frequently, often leading a versatile string trio that includes guitar and bass, though heās also been known to groove in a quartet with drums, keys and bass. Jake Shimabukuroās current tour takes him across the U.S. as he continues to find new ways to interact with the styles that have made him the musician he is today.Ā
Jake Shimabukuro in Concert
Jake Shimabukuro is a Hawaiian-born, fifth-generation Japanese American ukulele player who has become known as a virtuoso musician that can jam in almost any style. Born in 1976 in Honolulu, Shimabukuro received a ukulele from his mother, a musician herself, at age four. He studied with her for years, eventually entering the Roy Sakuma Studio and taking lessons from Tami Akiyami. In the 1990s, Shimabukuro would become a member of the trio Pure Heart alongside percussionist Lopaka Colón and guitarist and singer Jon Yamasato. The groupās first album, 1999ās Pure Heart, won four Na Hoku Hanohano awards ā basically the Hawaiian Grammys ā including Contemporary Album of the Year, Most Promising Artist, Album of the Year and Favorite Entertainment of the Year.
Shimabukuro signed with Epic Records International, a division of Sony Music Japan, in 2002. He toured in Japan and released a number of Japan-only albums. Wanting to share his music with the U.S. as well, Shimabukuro founded Hitchhike Records and soon released 2005ās Dragon, which charted at No. 5 on Billboardās Top World Music Albums. The following year, after his YouTube success, he released Gently Weeps, which peaked at No. 2 on the Top World Music Albums. Shimabukuro has gone on to release numerous high-charting albums.Ā

It was Wonderfull to see live music once again. Jake was EXCELLENT. The Uptown Theater was first rate
Never disappoints. A true musician with ingenuity and style. Mild mannered and humble. Will be seeing his performance when ever we can.
Have followed Jake over a decade. Still the humble young man we met so long ago. Can not believe he can perform a such high level aver the years.
My fourth. How is it he just gets better when he was already the best. Playing with bass and cellist augmented the concert and Jakeās energy. Some classics mixed with new material.
Jake is an amazing artist and entertainer! My husband and I had a great time and would highly recommend. Looking forward to seeing Jake again!
Jakes show was wonderful. It was a very moving experience and the Uptown theatre is awesome. We had a great time.
We loved this show! Jake is amazing. As my son said, āHis hands move so quickly, there are sparks!ā This was my 4th or 5th time seeing him in concert and I would go again!
Just fantastic. Thunderstorm Artis opened and Jake was amazing as usual. The Birchmere was phenomenal.
Jake and his crew were amazing. All I could think some times when he was playing is how fast are his hands moving! He is a consummate master of technique and artistry when it comes to the ukulele.
This was our first time visiting the theater. It is a great venue.
From the warm up act, to Jake & his accompanying bass & beatbox musicians, the talent was superb!
Jake is an immense talent and a great guy. The only thing about shows like these is you get zero info on what he's performing and with whom when you have to buy tickets. I miss programs too.
I took my 12 yo grand daughter, who is a budding Ukulele player. We sat in the second row and were overjoyed to be a part of this riveting show. The musicians expressed sincere heart and talent. What a great example of real sharing for a 12 yo. Joy is a circle.
Took my son, who is a big Jake fan. What a fantastic experience. Jake is on another level. Made a wonderful memory
Jake Shimabukuro is unreal. You may not believe that a ukulele player could put on such a show that would rate such a description but it's true. I've seen Jake at least 4 times and this was his best yet. The guy just never makes a mistake. He's the nicest guy you'll every meet. He is the best there is at his craft. He is humble. Try to name someone else that's the best at what they do that's this nice and this humble. I can't do it. Bottom line, you need to find a way to see Jake whenever you can. The Carolina Theatre in Durham is a wonderful place. Don't miss him the next time he comes there.
Amazing sets and music and a great performer! Highly recommend going to see him
Jake has added as an introductory performer a soloist from Hawaii named Thunderstorm Artis, who has an excellent voice and some good original material. Also Jake is playing with an excellent percussionist and an excellent bass player, again both from Hawaii. As always, Jake performed brilliantly on his ukulele. Truly a night to remember!
Besides superb performance by Jake, I was very moved by Jake's humbleness and gratitude towards everyone involved with the performance. I am glad that he is slowly known to general public. I would love to listen to him in Hawaii, my favorite place. I wish he played more traditional Hawaiian music.
Jake is undoubtedly the most amazing ukulele player! The sounds that he gets from that instrument are unbelievable! If I hadnāt heard them with my own ears I wouldnāt believe. High energy, positive, and most enjoyable. I will be making sure to catch Jake whenever I am able.
