Jake Shimabukuro on Tour

In a way, it’s Hawaiian ukulele player Jake Shimabukuro’s live performances that first brought him international attention — in 2006, Shimabukuro’s success skyrocketed after a video of him playing The Beatles’ “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” became one of YouTube’s first massively viral videos. Ever since, he’s shared his joy of music with audiences all over the world, playing songs that range from jazz and classical to rock and bluegrass. Before he blew up, Shimabukuro was signed to a label in Japan and toured the country extensively. After starting his own label and playing more U.S. shows, he’s appeared on a number of talk shows with hosts like Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Kimmel and Carson Daly. Now, Shimabukuro tours the world frequently, often leading a versatile string trio that includes guitar and bass, though he’s also been known to groove in a quartet with drums, keys and bass. Jake Shimabukuro’s current tour takes him across the U.S. as he continues to find new ways to interact with the styles that have made him the musician he is today.

Jake Shimabukuro in Concert

Jake Shimabukuro is a Hawaiian-born, fifth-generation Japanese American ukulele player who has become known as a virtuoso musician that can jam in almost any style. Born in 1976 in Honolulu, Shimabukuro received a ukulele from his mother, a musician herself, at age four. He studied with her for years, eventually entering the Roy Sakuma Studio and taking lessons from Tami Akiyami. In the 1990s, Shimabukuro would become a member of the trio Pure Heart alongside percussionist Lopaka Colón and guitarist and singer Jon Yamasato. The group’s first album, 1999’s Pure Heart, won four Na Hoku Hanohano awards — basically the Hawaiian Grammys — including Contemporary Album of the Year, Most Promising Artist, Album of the Year and Favorite Entertainment of the Year.

Shimabukuro signed with Epic Records International, a division of Sony Music Japan, in 2002. He toured in Japan and released a number of Japan-only albums. Wanting to share his music with the U.S. as well, Shimabukuro founded Hitchhike Records and soon released 2005’s Dragon, which charted at No. 5 on Billboard’s Top World Music Albums. The following year, after his YouTube success, he released Gently Weeps, which peaked at No. 2 on the Top World Music Albums. Shimabukuro has gone on to release numerous high-charting albums.

  • Shimabukuro Best Ever!!

by Distortedmom on 3/28/14State Theatre - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

Jake Shimabukuro in concert in Portland was absolutely amazing! This is the best concert I have ever attended at the State Theater. Previous concerts have been ruined by poor sound (too loud). This concert was exceptional in every way including where I sat (orchestra). Besides being a phenomenal player, he was gracious and so happy to be able to play for all of us. He shared some personal things about being a new dad which increased the intimacy with the audience. FABULOUS!!!!!

  • A musical magician delivers a spellbinding show!

by BeePeace on 3/28/14State Theatre - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

I was vaguely familiar with Jake Shimabukuro, so didn't really know what to expect from his show. Whatever expectations I could have had were far exceeded. He is phenomenal! The skill he has on the uke is mind-boggling. At times, his fingers move so fast and the sound coming out of that instrument is so powerful, it doesn't seem real. In addition to his superb technical craft, Jake is down to earth, funny and engaging with the audience. (One note about the venue: Love State Theatre in Portland, ME, but wish the ushers/staff would do a better job of keeping people in the lobby quiet during the performance. At one point, an usher's voice could be clearly heard giving someone seat directions. What the hell?! Just disrespectful to the performer and an unnecessary distraction.) But back to the show... absolutely GO see/hear Jake Shimabukuro if you have the chance. A truly entertaining and beautiful show performed by an absolute musical magician.

  • Virtuosity on four strings

by mainelydave on 3/28/14State Theatre - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

One of the best concerts I've ever seen. Jake has a mastery of his instrument, both in technical prowess and playing with feeling. A strong, but humble stage presence. The sound was excellent. The lighting was excellent. The fog, well, a bit much.

  • Wow.

by suzgw on 3/6/14Balboa Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

This was my first experience in seeing Jake Shimabukuro live. Wow. Very personable, very appreciative of his sold out performance. As he said during his concert--people come to the performance with low expectations for a ukelele player. (i.e. ukelele = plucking, strumming strings as in the Don Ho era) I'm not sure what I was expecting; I've heard some of his pieces before...BUT to watch him play was impressive and exciting!. Who knew a ukelele could produce such wonderful melodic sounds AND rock-n-roll from its FOUR strings? Amazing. You really have to see it for yourself to believe the wonderful music Jake is creating from his instrument.

  • Jake didn't disappoint!

He makes his ukulele sing in ways that set him apart from any other artist. He left us wanting more.

  • Jake Shimabukuro was amazing!

The beauty of his music and the sound from his ukulele was absolutely amazing. I had only seen his YouTube videos before and was impressed with them, but the videos cannot compare to the experience of Jake live.

Run...run...run to see Jake perform! He plays the ukulele like no one else. You will be amazed, delighted, enchanted, moved and astonished!

  • Great, but...

    by 1TBW on 2/22/14Balboa Theatre - San DiegoRating: 4 out of 5

My wife and I REALLY enjoyed the concert but there were a few distractions. 1.) The light show...ughhh Not needed at all. I don't need to see Jake go from red to green to orange to blue. It was distracting...just put him in good lighting and leave it alone. 2.) The bass player....he was WAY over modulated and drowned out Jake's playing. Very annoying. Again, not needed....we came to hear Jake, not a bass player.

  • An exceptional show

cozy venue and excellent sound system made Jake Shimabukuro rock the crowd with his mesmerizing ukulele music. we'll definitely attend again....the one thing I wish he had done is play a very short hawaian music just to give us a taste...it was really beyond awesome what we experienced that night at his concert

  • Jake was awesome!

by ukelover on 2/22/14Balboa Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

Jake put on a great performance in SanDiego. What he can do with a ukulele is incredible. Hearing him in concert last year in Santa Clarita prompted me to start taking ukulele lessons which I am enjoying. I also liked the addition of the bass player with some of the songs this year.

  • Jake was mind blowing!

    by Lolly5 on 2/22/14Balboa Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

His passion for music is unmistakable. His talent is amazing. How does he create those wondrous sounds from just 4 strings? His bassist is truly an artist and great blend with Jake's intricate skills. Would love to see this again!!

  • Jake is amazing!

Second time I've seen Jake Shimabukuro. Took my whole family this time and they all loved the show as much as I did. He is an incredible performer and a nice, humble guy. You won't believe he can get SO much music out of that little instrument!

  • Terrific event!

by SusieA on 2/22/14Balboa Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

I knew little about Jake Shimabukuro, and the ukelele, prior to the concert. Now I'm a huge fan of both!

He's amazing! I wasn't familiar with his songs. He is so entertaining. Seems so humble and like a really nice guy too.

  • Review of Jake Shimabukuro show and meet and greet

by MKJOFDM on 2/22/14Balboa Theatre - San DiegoRating: 4 out of 5

Would recommend the show as Jake was incredible. But, the meet and greet was terribly disorganized, and no one seemed to know what was going on. The meet and greet info was supposed to be released 14 days before, but prekindle didn't get the info out until the afternoon of the day of the event. The actual meet and greet with Jake was fine, but the delivery of the items promised for the SWAG bag and other gifts was a dismal failure. No one seemed to know where the bags were, and those of us who paid over $220 per ticket had to wait for well more than an hour after the event was over to get the bag. The T shirts were not available in large and are supposed to be mailed. The other contents of the bag were meaningless - a cheap soda/beer can holder and rubber bracelet and decal. The one year membership to Uke Nation was completely missing, and I suspect the 'special gift' from Jake was also missing. Would never do that again, especially since there was a meet and greet for free after the show. Some people that paid for the meet and greet could not wait the hour+ after the show and had to leave without anything.

  • Jake rocks!

by Sydneysfriend on 2/22/14Balboa Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

What a concert! Jake worked with a bass guitarist for part of the show-excellent, then it was Jake Jake Jake. He made the venue seem intimate even though it was sold out and packed. After the concert he had a meet and greet and all these children with ukeleles came to meet with him. It was a two hour drive for my friend and I to get there, but it was worth the drive The music is still in my head days after the concert.

  • Jake is very talented !

by Randymoto on 2/22/14Balboa Theatre - San DiegoRating: 4 out of 5

We enjoyed the program. Our thought is that the bassist was not necessary. We would have liked to see a few of the older Hawiian traditional songs. But Jake can make the uke sing.

  • by RenaultLad on 2/22/14Balboa Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

Unless you have heard or seen Jake perform, you won't be prepared for the incredible music coming from a Ukelele. If possible, reserve seats close to the stage so you can enjoy the sweet sounds and watch Jake's hands as he moves one hand up and down the fret board while the other finds individual strings without ever missing a note.

  • Jake Shimabukuro lit up the stage!!

by cwbrighteyes on 2/22/14Balboa Theatre - San DiegoRating: 5 out of 5

Jake's unbelievable energy and talent on the ukulele made for an unforgettable night for my husband and I. The wide variety of styles he can play on one instrument is mind blowing: classical, electric rock n roll, traditional Hawaiian, you name it, he can play it. Jake's humble personality and childlike smile kept us smiling throughout the entire performance. We were teary eyed as well for many of the songs as his music envokes a nostalgic happiness and a feeling of being blessed you get to attend such an incredible show. We can't wait to see him play again. We love you Jake!!!!!
