Jacob Collier In Concert
Jacob Collier has long had a voice and talent far beyond his years. The North London, England-based vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, arranger, composer, producer, and all-around music theory prodigy has music in his blood — literally. Collier's mother, Susan, is a music teacher, conductor, and violinist at London's Royal Academy of Music, the same place his grandfather taught. As a kid, Jacob attended The Purcell School for Young Musicians and performed in productions of Mozart's The Magic Flute and Benjamin Britten's The Turn of the Screw.
But it wasn't until Collier began experimenting on his own that his music career took off. At age 17, he began uploading complex music videos that showed every vocal and instrumental part of a song, including keys, strings, percussion, and even as many as 14 vocal harmonies. These impressive videos, featuring covers of songs by artists like Stevie Wonder, Burt Bacharach, and George Gershwin, quickly went viral, enough to get the attention of legendary musician Quincy Jones. Around the same time, a PhD student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Media Lab began working with Collier on a one-man multimedia experience to capture all of his talents at once in a live setting.
By 2015, the then 20-year-old was ready to debut his technologically stunning show, featuring effects like 3D video loops and a vocal harmonizer, in London. Soon after, he took the show to Switzerland's Montreux Jazz Festival, where he opened for Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea, and then onward to stages across the globe.
Already a master performer, Collier soon got to work on his debut album, In My Room, which came out in summer 2016. Just like his shows, the album was all Jacob — he wrote, arranged, played every instrument, and recorded the entire album on his own, all in his family's London home. The following year, two of the covers featured on the album, Stevie Wonder's "You and I" and ‘The Flintstones' theme song "Flintstones," won Grammy Awards for Best Arrangement.
After two-and-half grueling years on the road, including collaborations and performances with orchestras from around the world, Collier took time to work on his follow-up release. He announced that his second album would actually be a four-volume set, with the first volume, Djesse (Vol. 1) appearing in late 2018. Stay tuned for plenty more music from this unstoppable phenom.
Jacob Collier was absolutely amazing. His talent is off the charts. E really enjoyed this concert!
Collier was dynamic and engaged the audience. He's a great performer. I was familiar with only a few of his pieces and found his compositions interesting. However, I am a believer that sometimes "less is more."His thesis is that layers of sound and complexity help him create mood. I would disagree. He played some melodies that I think would have created an even stronger emotion/mood if they had been simpler and more stripped down. Overall, though, I'm glad I went. Kimbra was his warm-up. She was meh. Lacked energy and music wasn't very good.
Amazing concert! Great musicianship from Jacob of course, but also all the musicians and singers. Could not have asked for a better concert experience.
What an ahhhhhmazing experience & collection of young musicians led by the brilliant musical genius Jacob Collier!!! Every artist on-stage shared exceptional talent & energy!! I will forever see his show anywhere anytime!
Opening act was not my cup of tea but it was interesting and unique. Jacob was awesome!
So much energy. His shows have gotten quite fancy.
I’ve been following Jacob Collier’s work on you tube since I first saw him with Snarky Puppy singing “Don’t You Know”. I saw him live at the Van Buren in Phoenix before covid and bought tickets for the following year but it was cancelled (covid). So, this was my first chance to see him perform. One thing you can count on with Jacob is every show will be new and different. I cannot wait for his return to Phoenix!! Check out his ingenious productions on You tube, unlike anything else.
Jacob Collier is one of the most versatile music theorists, musicians, and singers I've ever heard. He's always interesting and backed by a talented band. His vocals range timbres and styles. He played all the instruments on the stage: piano, keyboard, electric guitar, acoustic guitar, bass guitar, and drums. There was even a Vocoder-like synthesizer. Conducting the audience in multiple singalongs with various harmonizations is his unique strength. The songs were quite good.
Jacob is not only an incredible musician but a wonderful performer. He is completely himself on stage and is so welcoming and inspiring. Easily, his is one of the best concerts I’ve been to. I think everyone should see him at least once in their lives.
I don't think I will ever get to experience a concert like that again! Unless its from Jacob Collier ;). the only thing I didn't enjoy was the opener, but it was short, and gave me some time to get merch, so I'm not upset about it. Traveled all the way from Tulsa to Dallas for it and would definitely do it again!
The main concert meaning Jacob Collier and musicians was incredible. I saw him do a solo concert 8 years ago but this was on a different level. He never stops impressing me with his talent on whatever instrument he plays and his vocal skills are unreal. The opening act I could have done without. Her songs are 2 or 3 chords and voice had so much effect that it sounded fake
Child prodigy doin his thing. Had a blast. Toyota is reasonable on drinks surprisingly
I went to the concert in Charlotte NC (May 3rd) and also Irving, TX (May 13th). I find myself thinking that Jacob needs two different style concerts. In front of me in Texas sat an older gentleman and his wife (who he dragged to the concert because she had dragged him to many concerts so this one she came for him.) To my right was a high school music teacher and behind me two more music teachers. I went out of my way to ask their opinions. None of those around me at both concerts cared for Kimbra, the opening act. The lyrics were hard to understand in Charlotte (bad mixing?) They were a little better in Texas where her manner of dress was immodest and according to the older gentleman in front of me lamented it was "not my style."The older gentleman in front of me even said "It is beneath Jacob to have her for an opening act"and another quote was "I felt she needed medical attention."(half jokingly) The point was that the people around me AND others whom I spoke to were expecting something different when attending a Jacob Collier concert. They had musical genius in their expectations and hearing/listening to him. A couple agreed with me when I said "I enjoyed the end of his concert the most."Jacob came on strong and great. I think all enjoyed the audience participation. I just think there are musical professionals who want to more be exposed to and possibly learn more. I am sure they would enjoy a masterclass by him with songs that exhibit that musical genius. I enjoyed both of his concerts and I think all of the YouTube videos that I watched beforehand caused myself as well as the others I spoke with to expect something a little different. He is one incredible human being and a true gift to the musical world.
Why only 4 stars. The warmup act was too long. The dead time between warmup act and Jacob Collier was WAY too long. 5 stars. Thoroughly enjoyed Jacob’s act!!! 5 stars. The event staff were very courteous, friendly, professional and helpful from beginning to end of my visit.
If you EVER get the chance to see him, buy the tickets and just go. JC is a generational talent. His band was incredible. The vocal harmonies he creates with the other musicians/vocalists are insane. His music is almost impossible to describe because of it's virtuosity. It is something like a cross between Frank Zappa, the Lemon Pipers, and a tent revival. I know how crazy that sounds, but I don't know how else to describe it. The music is unexpectedly inventive, wonderfully melodic, and with seemingly boundless energy JC draws in his enthusiastic crowd to participate in these massive choir-like sing-alongs. I've never seen anything like it. Just go. It was absolutely wonderful.
The music was amazing, the energy was fantastic, and there was a lot of interaction with the audience.
Jacob’s music speaks for itself; incredibly progressive and interesting. His band was spot-on and delivered. Toyota Music Factory was an excellent venue to experience this show. Overall my expectations were exceeded.
This wasn't just an amazingly mind blowing musical experience, Jacob Collier and band are also consummate showpeople! 11 out of 10, would recommend!
I went wanting to experience the amazing talent that Jacob Collier is. He did not disappoint. While the opening act was perhaps a bit long, Kimbra was entertaining and engaging. It takes a lot of talent for one person to play an hour + set with variety and energy. Then Jacob came on and it was nonstop brilliance. He immediately engaged the Texas crowd with a brief Deep In the Heart of Texas take. He went on to play through a wide range of his tunes and covers, all of which showcased his multi instrumental chops, harmonic genius and soulful connection with the crowd. There were multiple crowd choir experiences and a show stopping 20 minute encore. I left walking on air. Magic, magic, magic, Thank you Jason for the experience.
Blew my expectations, he is so entertaining!! Hope to see him again soon.
