About Jackie Greene

Jackie Greene on Tour

Americana and roots-rock warrior Jackie Greene is a musician’s musician - a restless singer-songwriter and consummate collaborator who’s spent most of his adult life on the road. Since releasing his 2002 debut album, Gone Wanderin’, in his early twenties, Greene has been a permanent fixture in roots, blues, and jam-rock circles. The California-born artist thrives on stage, whether he’s wielding a guitar - churning out fiery licks at a neck-breaking pace - or settling down in front of the keys for a smoky, soulful ballad. Greene has toured alongside heavy hitters like B.B. King, Mark Knopfler, Susan Tedeschi, Huey Lewis and Taj Mahal. In between his solo gigs, Greene became a regular member of Phil Lesh & Friends, played in Trigger Hippy with Joan Osborne, and joined the Black Crowes as lead guitarist in 2013. He’s since come around full circle, getting back to his folk-y roots with intimate solo recordings and acoustic live sets - several of which have been preserved on record.

About Jackie Greene

Jackie Greene has helped keep rock ‘n’ roll alive and kicking well into the 21st century. Born Chris Nelson in Salinas, California, on November 27, 1980 (Jimi Hendrix’s birthday!), Greene grew up outside of Sacramento, where he gravitated toward music from a young age. As a kid, he took to the piano, first motivated to learn the classical melodies from Disney’s Fantasia, before discovering Ray Charles. Digging through the old records of his parents, he further expanded his influences to blues icons Mississippi John Hurt and Muddy Waters. As a teen, he picked up the guitar, trying to emulate six-string specialists like Buddy Guy and Eric Clapton. But it was Bob Dylan and Tom Waits who inspired Greene to start writing his own songs, and he began playing open-mic gigs at Sacramento bars and coffee shops right out of high school. Greene honed his skills on those small stages, where he also learned how to command a crowd. His first studio was his garage and his first record deal came with local indie label Dig Music. Greene’s first album, Gone Wanderin’, highlighted the multi-instrumentalist’s bluesy, Bob Dylan-esque appeal - harmonica and all - and it earned him a 2003 California Music Award for Best Blues/Roots Album. From there, his career took off: He released a string of acclaimed solo albums, joined Phil Lesh & Friends, and contributed the song “I Will Never Let You Go” to the Academy Award-winning Best Original Score for the film Brokeback Mountain. He began the 2010s mostly devoted to more collaborations: He was a member of the short-lived Trigger Hippy (alongside Black Crowes drummer Steve Gorman and singer-songwriter Joan Osborne) and stepped into the role as lead guitarist for the Black Crowes until they called it quits in 2015. That same year, Greene returned with his first solo album in five years, Back to Birth, a robust, roots-oriented set that balances blistering blues guitar with tender, thoughtful songwriting. Since, he’s continued to dig further into classic Americana, bluegrass, folk and Delta blues as he tirelessly brings it to stages across the country - both on his own and with his many legendary friends.

  • Jackie Greene continues to excel!!

    by Deano4885 on 10/23/10The Ark - Ann ArborRating: 5 out of 5

Jackie Greene is a phenomenally talented musician, gifted vocalist and delightful song writer. Anybody who has not seen Jackie perform is cheating themselves out of a top notch entertainment experience. Jackie's talent really shines through when you evaluate the quality of his arrangements - the individual voices of his band's instrumentation are interwoven as a part of a complete story that is delightful to hear. Don't miss the next time he makes his way east and holds a jam session at the Ark.

  • Jackie Greene is an amazing artist!!

    by ccm217 on 10/23/10The Ark - Ann ArborRating: 5 out of 5

Jackie is such a truly talented artist. He is amazing to watch perform. He relates to his audience and gives a wonderful show. Clearly is more into his art than he is to being a star, though a star he should be. His fans will agree. I'm so glad that I saw his show. I am a relatively new fan but am now a permanent fan. Will watch for anytime that he comes back to Michigan.

  • Jackie Greene at the Ark

by Anonymous on 10/22/10The Ark - Ann ArborRating: 3 out of 5

I gave it 3 stars, but Jackie Greene himself was 5 stars. The venue was terrible for this style of concert. The crowd was stuffy and very pretentious. Singing along with the artist was frowned upon. Jackie Greene would have been better to just sing to a mirror. You had to purchase a membership in order to purchase alcohol which I found ridiculous. I will never attend another show at the Ark. Hopefully Jackie Greene will play somewhere different when he comes to Michigan. a word of note. Apache Relay, a band from Nashville opened and they were really good. I highly recommend them.

  • Truly a special show

    by atlanta8473 on 10/18/10Masquerade - AtlantaRating: 5 out of 5

Atlanta needs to come out and see this guy Jackie Greene if he ever comes back. He toured all Summer with Gov't Mule, but he did not come to ATL because DMB did a double bill with Gov't Mule in ATL. I blame this unfortunate event as the reason why only about 30-40 people in ATL even know who Jackie Greene is. He is a singular talent, and he put on a special show.

  • Jackie Greene did not disappoint!

by dlam on 10/18/10Masquerade - AtlantaRating: 4 out of 5

Jackie Greene was fantastic this past Saturday. I was slightly bummed at the choice of venues, however, and hope that if he graces Atlanta again, he'll play somewhere else. Nothing against the Masquerade, it just didn't fit. Jackie and his band were wonderful, though, and I was impressed and greatly entertained. I hope he makes it back to the East coast soon!

AWESOME show! Go see him as soon as you can, soon you will not be able to see him so close in bar and will have to pay much more to see him.

  • Jackie Greene is Fabulous!

I've seen him many times and once again, he doesn't disappoint! The acoustic set was absolutely fantastic!!

  • Jackie Greene at Paradise Rock Club

by LpnBoston on 10/11/10Paradise Rock Club - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

Loved it!!! EXCEPTIONAL ACOUSTIC set opener!!!! Music to my ears. Jackie Greene is so enjoyable to listen to. I suggest to anyone who has not seen him are missing out on some excellent talent. He reminds me of both Dylans ,more like Jacob vocally and Bob with lyrical talent. His voice is is crisp and refreshing. Sound was excellent at the Paradise such a great venue to see a show.

  • Hits it on All Notes

by slydeways on 10/11/10Paradise Rock Club - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

The Paradise has gone through a major remodel and for me the big question always is the sound. There were a number of good pockets but the large beams did create gaps. Overall though, was pleasantly surprised. As for Jackie Greene; I have heard him with Warren Haynes/Govt Mule a number of times and recently with Levon Helm at one of his famous Midnight Rambles. This was the first time catching a full show with him with his band. Talented is not sufficient to describe him. There is a musical maturity to both his playing and presence that I first observed when he has sat in with seasoned giants. He knows his place and it is obvious, he is a student first and appreciates the art of learning. Likewise, it was clear with his own band: he was the teacher- guiding them through what seems to be an increasingly-complex musical road. He shares the gifts gained from the other artists with his own bandmates, without an ounce of arrogance in the process. Vocally, he is far beyond what I thought. He has and knows his own sound, and sings with exceptional poise and comfort. He emits an understanding of emotion as if he has lived through the pain or confusion those who penned some of his selections a generation or two before he was born, felt. Again, a maturity to his presentation. I often needed to remind myself how young he is. A young man who exudes the wisom and depth of a Dylan or Garcia. As far as a show: well, the crowd was into it form the first note; often accompanying on vocals from start to finish. They were familiar with his pieces as well as the several Grateful Dead/Band genre tunes in his set list. First set was acoustic: a real treat, second was with his full band. In my opinion, there is no one out there like him. One of my new favorites. He will modestly become one of the top artists of his generation so get out to hear him now while you can catch him in a small, intimate venue!

  • Jackie rocks!

by docrick on 10/10/10Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORKRating: 5 out of 5

Some performers just have "it", and Jackie's got it in spades. The music just comes out of him. Great performances all night, really consistent energy. Crowd really into it and he felt it. Great comfy venue to see an artist. His singing, harmonica and guitar performances, and song choices were impeccable. His artistry and instrumental skills have really evolved from when I first saw him. Phil's influence really heartwarming: acoustic set, then electric; little riffs leading into songs; song teases during jams (ie. Bird Song during Speedway), and lots of jammin! Great stuff!

  • Not To Be Missed

by Anonymous on 10/10/10Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORKRating: 5 out of 5

Great performance as usual. I could've listened all night. If you haven't seen Jackie's talent, you should see him next time he's in town. You'll be happy you did!

by Anonymous on 10/10/10Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORKRating: 5 out of 5

i last saw Jackie in August when he opened for Gov't Mule - that show was a throwaway - this show was the reason we go see live music!!

  • absolutely great!

    by teeny5 on 10/10/10Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORKRating: 5 out of 5

Loved the show. Jackie Greene is so talented and not bad to look at either! His own music is awesome and the Dead songs he played were great too. He even has a Jerry-doll on the stage with his band.

Jackie is always great, but this little intimate show was incredible. The venue was great too. Jackie never disappoints.

  • Jackie Greene casts his spell

by MrODog on 3/5/10Varsity Theater - MinneapolisRating: 5 out of 5

Jackie Greene was spot-on. His little trio rocked the joint, with subtle drumming, scorching electric guitar and crafted and nuanced accustic guitar. It was solid music for two hours, with brief, easy-going banter between tunes, and a short intermiision. Jackie was personable and funny. The song selection was broad and diverse, with covers of Dylan and John Fogherty as well as Jackie's standards. It was a cool show with a tight band that had great rapport .

  • Jackie Greene is amazing!

by Anonymous on 3/5/10Varsity Theater - MinneapolisRating: 5 out of 5

Jackie is one of the most talented musicians I have ever heard. Seeing Jackie perform live, I am reminded that someday he will be a legend comparable to Dylan.
