About

J. Roddy Walston is a force of nature. If his hits like Heavy Bells is are a war cry, then the deep cuts like Boys Can Never Tell are a tactical cosmic retreat. For some, his music is a form of religion, psychedelic in its intensity, transformative in its grip on the body, shaking loose something primal that's been buried too long. It's not about thinking, It's about moving, feeling, surrendering. His influences are a riot of contradictions: Kurt Cobain's fury, Nilsson's fractured sweetness, Zeppelin's power, and somewhere in there a perverted nod to William Onyeabor's lonely calculator funk. Critics try to box him in, but Walston can't be contained--he does chaos, and his live shows do damage, but fortunately his songs can pay the tab. Catch him and his band before he burns it all down again.

  • Insanely Good Live

by Twister53 on 11/14/13The Newport Music Hall - ColumbusRating: 5 out of 5

Watching J Roddy shake, tremor, and roll all over stage as he pounds away on his piano, hair flying, head beating, voice strained to the point of breaking (while in key), all while the Business gives great riffs and solos of the garage rock/blues is worth 100 times the cost of admission. This venue was perfect. I saw him in a small club a year ago, and it was great. But a small theatre with general admission only and good acoustics was perfect for what these guys bring, and they bring it all. This was the best show I've seen in years.

  • J. Roddy Walston and the Business in KC

by GreasySteve on 7/15/11The Record Bar - Kansas CityRating: 5 out of 5

If you love The Stones, The Faces, The Black Crows, Jerry Lee Lewis, bourbon whiskey, fatback bacon, rare steak, grandma's fried chicken, cold beer, unbridled passion, or throwing rocks at windows in abandoned buildings, then you will love this band live and their new record. When I describe their stuff and this show to people, I first ask if they can imagine what drinking a pint of really good moonshine mixed with freshly squeezed cider over the course of 90 minutes would SOUND like. Basically, it is amazing, fire-hot, sincere as your grandparents letters from during the war, and on the verge of strapping 15 gross of lit bottle-rockets to your hind-parts when your hair is on fire. I haven't seen a show this good in a club in more that 12 years.

  • J. Roddy Walston and the Business is PHENOMENAL!!

I'm considering myself lucky for having the chance to see J. Roddy Walston and the business open for Shooter Jennings. I drove three hours to see Shooter and after J. Roddy finished their set we both turned to each other and said, "Well that alone was worth the trip!". They put on one high energy hell of a rock n' roll show, that's for sure. I love the mix of the pounding piano in with many of their songs. I was thoroughly blown away and that just doesn't happen very often with an opening act!! I picked up their latest album while we were there and I have been listening to it non-stop ever since and pimping it to all of my friends. I'm like a one man street team... I just wish they were hitting a street nearby soon!
