About

Best known by the moniker Iron & Wine, Samuel Beam's stunning acoustic guitar and quiet voice once again made waves with the release of Ghost on Ghost, his fifth studio album. This largely experimental record delves into the supposedly disparate worlds of pop, R&B and jazz, meanwhile proving the singer's impressive versatility. The accompanying tour schedule included several appearances throughout the United States, as well as a handful in Australia. As usual, Iron & Wine showed no problems selling tickets, with fans anxious to experience both new singles and classic tracks. Ghost on Ghost came as a welcome followup to Kiss Each Other Clean, which similarly represented a departure from Beam's typical acoustic style.

Beam's musical endeavors as Iron & Wine began in 2002, when he released his first album, The Creek Drank The Cradle. This entire collection was recorded in Beam's home studio and mainly featured vocals, acoustic guitar, slide guitar and the banjo. Iron & Wine later followed up with Our Endless Numbered Days, which was recorded in a professional studio. Later albums included 2007's The Shepherd's Dog and the 2011 release Kiss Each Other Clean, which peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 charts. Following the release of these later albums, Beam took part in multiple concert series, showing off a live voice that was just as gentle as what fans had heard on their favorite Iron & Wine albums. Although a handful of different instruments are incorporated into the Ghost on Ghost promotional tour in hopes of better reflecting Beam's journey into jazz and pop, the same poignant feel of this brilliant musician's tracks is always maintained for the sake of dedicated listeners.

  • Amazing as always!

by Lenny80 on 6/28/14Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom - Hampton BeachRating: 5 out of 5

This was the third time I have seen Sam Beam in concert and he is amazing! He is beyond talented and has a smooth voice that can sing any tune. True talent is when a musician does not need a band behind him or her, when they can stand on the stage with just their voice and a guitar magic can happen, and it did as always for Iron & Wine.

  • Would Go See Iron and Wine Again!

by SuperfanBK on 6/28/14Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom - Hampton BeachRating: 5 out of 5

Iron and Wine played a large variety of old and new material that was spot on to the original recordings. They performed for around two hours with Sam doing an acoustic set in the middle for around 30 minutes. During this break for the band, Sam took requests and interacted with the audience, cracking jokes and giving some history on his music. With all respect to the rest of the band, this was the highlight of the evening. Sam's vocals and guitar playing were impeccable, astonishing and mesmerizing. I would highly recommend seeing Iron and Wine to any of their fans or anyone who is into moden day folk music.

  • Best show by Sam yet!

Great venue and even better music. I've traveled to see Sam in Ontario and Ohio....this had BY FAR been his best show yet!

The band was amazing!!! But the venue had chairs laid out instead of an open floor and there was no room to dance and groove. When people tried to dance in the walkways, they were asked to go back to their seats. Even the singer mentioned he enjoyed seeing people grooving as much as it could happen. But it wasn't really accomplished.

  • Wonderful Acoustic Set- but missed some favorites!

by Beachie75 on 6/28/14Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom - Hampton BeachRating: 4 out of 5

I have been listening to Iron and Wine for 10 years, and have always missed out on his shows. When the I saw an ad on FB for a show 30 minutes from home, I was pumped! The Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom was the perfect venue for an intimate show like this. Staff was great, cocktail service was perfect, and we had great seats. The opener- Secret Sisters, was something to sit through, and I was antsy to see Sam Beam! He started off with 5 or 6 newer songs I didn't even recognize, and was accompanied by a band. His voice was amazing though, either soft enough to sleep to, or giving me chills. He was a little guy with big hair and a long beard, and he interacted with the audience throughout. When he gave the band a break and played a few acoustic songs, just him and the guitar, that's when the magic happened! He took audience requests, and among them played Upward Over the Mountain, Trapeze Swinger, and Sea and the Rhythm. I strongly preferred the older stuff without the band, but seeing those few songs made the whole thing worth it. The encore was some random song I didn't know, and he didn't play Bird Stealing Bread, Sodom South Georgia, or his most famous song, Such Great Heights!! I was really disappointed by this, and wanted to hear more of the older stuff. Still, the acoustic set made the show worthwhile and I would still recommend this show to others!

This was one of the best shows I have ever seen. Iron and Wine was fantastic. The music was beautiful, the whole show was enchanting. The atmosphere was great and I cannot say enough good things.

Awesome. A lot in part that the audience was respectful and wanted to hear great tunes.

  • Iron & Wine...Sam Beam

Superb, perfect performance. I wish it was a smaller venue but that is just my preference.

  • Everything I Expected + More!

by AspenR on 4/1/14William a Egan Civic and Convention Center - AnchorageRating: 5 out of 5

Sam was totally perfect. The performance was acoustic and he only had 1 other guy playing backup instruments. There was no setlist, which I was super stoked about, he just joked around and asked the crowd what we wanted to hear and we yelled songs out. He played a good mix of old and new. Amazing voice, amazing songs. If you are an Iron & Wine fan you have to see him live!

Iron & Wine is a great act. Sam Beam had a very approachable stage presence. He took new approaches to some of his older songs and played a wide variety of new songs. His stripped-down presentation with only one accompanist on about half the songs, solo the remainder, suited the venue very well.

  • Iron & Wine is a must see.

The show was so amazing, he had a great sense of humor and the quality of the music was astounding. I was very impressed. My boyfriend and I really enjoyed it.

  • Amazing-Sam Beam was the bomb!

by Darmsala on 3/31/14William a Egan Civic and Convention Center - AnchorageRating: 5 out of 5

My favorite song what the one about Georgia. This concert was every bit as wonderful as I had expected! I cannot believe I missed him when he played at UAA. I will not miss him the next time.

The avenue seemed more supportive of a faster-paced dance concert but this music was slow and raw. Forcing most of the audience to stand kept people energetic and interactive but it wasn't that sort of show. Seats would have made the experience more enjoyable and appreciated.

  • Iron and Wine at the Egan

by AlaskaTeacher on 3/31/14William a Egan Civic and Convention Center - AnchorageRating: 2 out of 5

Iron and Wine was excellent as expected, but the venue kind of blew. Maybe it's me getting older, but his music is mellow and meant to be enjoyed in a comfortable setting by adults; preferably sitting down and with a drink in your hand, not standing around dancing (his music is not dance music). At this event, you could have either stood around with a significant amount of teenagers (who mostly never heard of Iron and Wine, but came out only because it was a concert on a Friday night) and sit uncomfortably in the back of the room. Would it really have killed anyone if they allowed the 21+ adults in the room to bring their drinks in. In addition to reducing the sound quality, holding it at the Egan felt as if we were all crammed together in a high school gym.

  • No frills just good music

by Anonymous on 3/31/14William a Egan Civic and Convention Center - AnchorageRating: 5 out of 5

Just a man with a guitar. This was an awesome show in an intimate setting. Sam is very personable and down to earth. We had a lot of fun, felt more like a jam session than a concert which was great. Thanks for the entertainment it was memorable for sure.

Amazing show, amazing voice and a great venue. He had a great personality and interaction with the crowd. Only wish he would have told more stories about the songs but I understand we were not on Vh1 storytellers.

  • Sam Beam Acoustic

I really miss the big band shows, but I love listening to Iron and Wine regardless. This was definitely not the best of his shows that I've been to, but again, it was still Iron and Wine. Opening act wasn't great, but she did have a beautiful voice. i won't linger on that though. Although it wasn't my best Iron and Wine experience, ultimately I'm glad I went.
