About

Best known by the moniker Iron & Wine, Samuel Beam's stunning acoustic guitar and quiet voice once again made waves with the release of Ghost on Ghost, his fifth studio album. This largely experimental record delves into the supposedly disparate worlds of pop, R&B and jazz, meanwhile proving the singer's impressive versatility. The accompanying tour schedule included several appearances throughout the United States, as well as a handful in Australia. As usual, Iron & Wine showed no problems selling tickets, with fans anxious to experience both new singles and classic tracks. Ghost on Ghost came as a welcome followup to Kiss Each Other Clean, which similarly represented a departure from Beam's typical acoustic style.

Beam's musical endeavors as Iron & Wine began in 2002, when he released his first album, The Creek Drank The Cradle. This entire collection was recorded in Beam's home studio and mainly featured vocals, acoustic guitar, slide guitar and the banjo. Iron & Wine later followed up with Our Endless Numbered Days, which was recorded in a professional studio. Later albums included 2007's The Shepherd's Dog and the 2011 release Kiss Each Other Clean, which peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 charts. Following the release of these later albums, Beam took part in multiple concert series, showing off a live voice that was just as gentle as what fans had heard on their favorite Iron & Wine albums. Although a handful of different instruments are incorporated into the Ghost on Ghost promotional tour in hopes of better reflecting Beam's journey into jazz and pop, the same poignant feel of this brilliant musician's tracks is always maintained for the sake of dedicated listeners.

Samuel Beam puts on a great show!

by bumbobrown on 11/19/10Florida Theatre Jacksonville - Jacksonville

This venue's acoustics really added to Sam's great voice and guitar... This is the best show I've seen.. He sounds even better live and he has a great sense of humor. The Florida Theatre was the perfect fit and everyone was helpful. I am so glad I went :)

    Blew me away

by shpongleboooooo on 11/18/10Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

I've been a fan of Iron and wine for quite some time now and have never been let down by his voice on his albums, to see him live is awe inspiring. He was so down to earth and lighthearted. After beautifully singing "Flightless bird, American mouth" a capela he said "I wrote that about vampires, very inspiring" and then he let out a chuckle. I would absolutely see him again and again. I enjoyed the new upbeat music he showcased, but hope he doesn't stray too far from his folk roots.

    Honestly, I Was Disappointed

    by BoSouth24 on 11/18/10Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

I've been an Iron and Wine fan for a number of years now, and was really looking forward to finally having the opportunity to catch Sam and co. live. However, I was a little bit disappointed in the decision by him and the band to reinterpret the songs. The band played well, and I enjoyed a number of the elements involved, but I think the overall performance was a bit bland and the execution of the reinterpretation of the songs didn't quite do it for me.

    Sam is backI

by LocalNative on 11/18/10Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

Samuel Beam finally came back to Georgia after a four year absence. Sam seemed happy to be performing for us and was very friendly. Sam started out with acoustics of many of his old hits and then brought out a band to do a new take on his old hits and to also introduce some new songs. This show was unforgettable. I have never been so in awe of a performer. If you have not seen Samuel live you must do so.

Great music, even though I didn't know all of his songs. Very down to earth and funny between sets. Very talented, beautiful voice!

Iron and Wine @ Variety Playhouse was great

by Marktreefrog on 11/18/10Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

My favorite band at a great venue. I don't know why they still play small venues like this but they do so I will enjoy the intimate setting.

    Way different for him...

    by jdash1 on 11/18/10Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

This show was amazing solely because he changed up most of his songs. In the beginning, he played a couple songs on the acoustic, but then brought out a band and played some of his older stuff with them. He changed the songs to the point where it was hard to recognize which song it was, but they were all so good that it didn't matter. I wasn't focusing on whether or not I knew what song it was, I was just listening to the music. Incredible.

    So-so

by rltt on 11/18/10Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

Samuel Beam seemed intent on re-working almost all the compositions - making for some nice jams - but missing were any of the familiar sounding favorites ("I figure you have all the records"). A mix of standard tunes and re-arrangements would have been been better received.

    Sam Beam is a magician

by lolramen on 11/18/10Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

Show was absolutely amazing. Opening act (Nomo) was good, but nothing like Sam Beam on the acoustic guitar. Once the band came out it was still real good, but not as amazing to me. They also did upbeat versions of his slower songs, which was really cool and a great change of pace. Only one encore, which was a disappointed, as I was especially hoping for him to come back out without the band, but hey, can't always get what ya want. Overall an absolutely amazing experience, and I will see him again every chance I get.

This was one of the most enjoyable concerts I have ever been to. The venue was delightful as well; creating a very unique intimate atmosphere with the performers. I will be seeing him again for sure next time he is back in Atlanta!

    Stellar show...

by Anonymous on 11/18/10Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

The opener was definitely entertaining and I can never get enough of Sam singing with just his guitar. The only thing that would have made it better, was if they sang some of Rosie's songs, too. Maybe next time =)

    Iron & Wine

by CaseyLH on 11/18/10Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

The new stuff he played, which was practically the entire show, was awful. The band he played with definitely brought down the quality of the show.

Iron & Wine - worth getting sick for...

by diehardkavorka on 11/18/10Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

Iron & Wine at the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta was a date I had circled on my calendar. Sadly, a stomach bug leveled me almost immediately as the concert started. I ended up leaving early and missing the majority of the concert, but the 45 minutes that I saw (or heard, from the restroom) was divine. I can't wait for them to come back to town so I can see a full show next time! Damn stomach bug... Oh, and my apologies to any concert-goer that night that had to follow me into the restroom. :(

    1/2 good, 1/2 awful

by ironandboxwine on 11/18/10The Pageant - St Louis

half of this show was good, half of it was awful. Sam solo was amazing, Sam and band had moments of being very good, and the new songs sounded great. Before this show, I would hear about how an arrangement of a song can change the sound, but did not know really what the arrangement meant (i know it seems like common sense). I now know what an arrangement means to a song. Some of the arrangements were just horrible. The band was not in sync, needed practice, lots. Sam should have recognized this and just shut it down about 25 minutes remaining in the show and just went back to solo acoustic, it would have been a good end to a much anticipated show, instead I really think the applause at the end were cheers of happiness that the mess was over, and people can go back to their ipods and listen to the songs as they are to sound.

Sam Beam Needs To Drop The Band!

by jofox22 on 11/15/10The Pageant - St Louis

Iron and Wine fans know that Sam Beam is a folk artist. They know how he sounds, and want him to keep that sound. Folk is what he is all about, and this concert left me feeling let down and disappointed. At the beginning of the show, Sam announces he has a new band. Great. That's just what he needs, some band to unnecessarily back him up, when he all he needs to do to wow an audience is his voice and a guitar. Although he did play the first three or four songs acoustic and solo, the rest of the show with the band really didn't portray what Iron and Wine is all about, and left a bad taste in my mouth. Overall, disappointed in this show.

Iron and Wine, or Sam Beam, displayed a great stage presence. His voice is something I could listen to for hours without growing tired.

Sam Beam is a phenomenal performer. He built on his performance from solo all the way to band jam session. Also, he is just a sweet human being. Loved the show.

Well worth the 4 hour drive!

by classicrckr09 on 11/15/10The Pageant - St Louis

Living in KCMO, I had to drive 4 hours to STL to see this man's seemingly endless talent. It was well worth the gas and loss of sleep and I would have been happy with a show where Sam Beam simply played his choice of songs in a nice intimate environment (which is what I expected). He went above my expectations and took some of his hits and modified them... adding a new experience to the same songs us fans have listened to thousands of times over. I absolutely loved the show, but if I had to pull one criticism out of it I'd say I would have liked a little more variety amongst the setlist. However, I will never forget this show and I will never regret driving across the state of Missouri to experience two hours of this man's awe-inspiring talent.

Sammy Beam is my all time love

by MeMe25 on 11/15/10The Pageant - St Louis

Great show just because it was Sam. He changed up a lot of the classics which was interesting and a once in a lifetime thing... but sometimes I wished I could just hear the originals. The first half of the show was MIND BLOWING.
