About

Best known by the moniker Iron & Wine, Samuel Beam's stunning acoustic guitar and quiet voice once again made waves with the release of Ghost on Ghost, his fifth studio album. This largely experimental record delves into the supposedly disparate worlds of pop, R&B and jazz, meanwhile proving the singer's impressive versatility. The accompanying tour schedule included several appearances throughout the United States, as well as a handful in Australia. As usual, Iron & Wine showed no problems selling tickets, with fans anxious to experience both new singles and classic tracks. Ghost on Ghost came as a welcome followup to Kiss Each Other Clean, which similarly represented a departure from Beam's typical acoustic style.

Beam's musical endeavors as Iron & Wine began in 2002, when he released his first album, The Creek Drank The Cradle. This entire collection was recorded in Beam's home studio and mainly featured vocals, acoustic guitar, slide guitar and the banjo. Iron & Wine later followed up with Our Endless Numbered Days, which was recorded in a professional studio. Later albums included 2007's The Shepherd's Dog and the 2011 release Kiss Each Other Clean, which peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 charts. Following the release of these later albums, Beam took part in multiple concert series, showing off a live voice that was just as gentle as what fans had heard on their favorite Iron & Wine albums. Although a handful of different instruments are incorporated into the Ghost on Ghost promotional tour in hopes of better reflecting Beam's journey into jazz and pop, the same poignant feel of this brilliant musician's tracks is always maintained for the sake of dedicated listeners.

by mattdeckerrrrr on 2/2/11Radio City Music Hall - New YorkRating: 1 out of 5

being a huge fan of iron and wine i was extremely disappointed with this weeks show. When i think of iron and wine i think beautiful melodies, intricate guitar parts with intertwining melodies and harmonies, simplicity at its best with a very intimate vibe. The show this week was the complete opposite of that. A sax section with sam strumming away on a sg backed with distortion, not to mention a rhythm section that sounded like a berklee project band. im all about trying new things but iron and wine was no longer this artful, intimate experience but rather a washed up top forty version of this. I still love his music and always will but i would have liked to have heard something that at least rang art and not a mediocre adult contemporary pop act. i almost walked out.

Great show! Loved the songs! Iron and Wine did not disappoint. Samuel blew me away with the encore. Well done!

This show was not very good. The full band made it sound like a cruise ship cover band at one point. Stick with what made you popular in the first place and stop selling out to big record labels. Maybe try to avoid until he does an acoustic tour.

  • Edie over Iron and Wine

by Bachi on 2/1/11Radio City Music Hall - New YorkRating: 3 out of 5

He forgot his lyrics not once but twice. SMH That bunch of musicians were awful and did not seem to have ever worked with each other ever. They didnt jam ..they made one horrid static sound when they all played together. Where they smoking something? 1st and possibly the last time I see Iron and Wine. I paid too much money for a unshaven hipster who acts all pretentious and oh so pleased with himself. He was too uptight while playing half the time towards the end. No variations in verse etc. Edie was the best thing there even though the "twilight crowd" did not ackowledge it. Sam has talent and has a great voice however he could have done better.

  • Sam Beam, the musical genius

by coral5 on 2/1/11Radio City Music Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Sam Beam (Iron & Wine) is my favorite artist I know of. Most of the concert had a new groovy twist to his usual amazing guitar playing and melodically perfect voice. Plus, he is charismatic and fun to listen to speaking inbetween songs. His encore was just amazing! Seven minutes of his beautiful song with no one on stage but himself. :D This new cd is just lovely!

  • Iron & Wine live = waste of your money!

by Anonymous on 2/1/11Radio City Music Hall - New YorkRating: 2 out of 5

I love Iron & Wine, and I was so excited to see them perform this past saturday at R.C.M.H., but unfortunately, they aren't good live at all! They tried to speed up the tempo on all of their songs, which sounded awkward and didn't give the audience what they wanted, which was their greatest songs played how we know them and love them! I found myself barely engaged the entire concert and was only too ready to leave when it was over. It's a shame, but I still love the band, just won't ever go to a live show again.

Disappointed that he did not sing his popular songs and did not sing most of his older songs that made him popular.

  • Amazing Show...Minus the Opening Act

by may1388 on 2/1/11Radio City Music Hall - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

Iron and Wine was AMAZING. Sam Beam is by far one of the most talented human beings I have ever witnessed. He put on quite a show by mixing it up a little bit. I deduct a star for the opening act, Edie Brickell. I think she's smoked one too many joints in her day.

  • Iron & Wine - Phenomenal

by IronAndWineRCMH on 2/1/11Radio City Music Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

We ended up switching seats at the last minute; ended up front row center. The first few songs were just Sam, his sister Sara, and a few others playing extremely mellow tracks. After that, he brought out a brass section that helped give the rest of the show a more lively feel. For the encore, he came out alone and played The Trapeze Swinger; those eight minutes were surreal.

  • disappointing

by camembert547 on 1/31/11Radio City Music Hall - New YorkRating: 1 out of 5

Edie Brickell first part was very nice, but, Iron and WIne was very disappointing. The sound was not good, you could hear the guitar but not the voice, the guy seemed not at ease with the public, made several mistakes, was not nice with his band and obviously they all needed to rehearse more. I enjoy very much I&W from his records (old and very new) but on stage, not at all. May be the guy is not ready yet for big audiences. I almost left in the middle (other did left). Too bad as my expectations were high, but this ended as one of the most disappointing concerts since months.

Amazing. The Acoustics are great! There isn't a bad seat in the house when it sounds so good.

  • Iron & Wine: Remixed

by jenivirgo1 on 1/31/11Radio City Music Hall - New YorkRating: 3 out of 5

Being a huge fan of Sam Beam, I found this show to be quite a treat. However, the less-than-ardent fan probably didn't come away with the same feeling. Similar to the recent performances of the Counting Crows and Bob Dylan, Iron & Wine decided to update and re-orchestrate many of their most notable songs. Fever Dream was unrecognizable and for me quite interesting to hear and Cinder and Smoke may be even more superb with the horn section, fast pace and 70's-esque vibe, but the rest of the remixing left me a bit cold. All in all, if you're a big fan, this tour is not to be missed. If you're seeing them for the first time, await a more intimate venue that highlights just Sam and his guitar.
