About

Best known by the moniker Iron & Wine, Samuel Beam's stunning acoustic guitar and quiet voice once again made waves with the release of Ghost on Ghost, his fifth studio album. This largely experimental record delves into the supposedly disparate worlds of pop, R&B and jazz, meanwhile proving the singer's impressive versatility. The accompanying tour schedule included several appearances throughout the United States, as well as a handful in Australia. As usual, Iron & Wine showed no problems selling tickets, with fans anxious to experience both new singles and classic tracks. Ghost on Ghost came as a welcome followup to Kiss Each Other Clean, which similarly represented a departure from Beam's typical acoustic style.

Beam's musical endeavors as Iron & Wine began in 2002, when he released his first album, The Creek Drank The Cradle. This entire collection was recorded in Beam's home studio and mainly featured vocals, acoustic guitar, slide guitar and the banjo. Iron & Wine later followed up with Our Endless Numbered Days, which was recorded in a professional studio. Later albums included 2007's The Shepherd's Dog and the 2011 release Kiss Each Other Clean, which peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 charts. Following the release of these later albums, Beam took part in multiple concert series, showing off a live voice that was just as gentle as what fans had heard on their favorite Iron & Wine albums. Although a handful of different instruments are incorporated into the Ghost on Ghost promotional tour in hopes of better reflecting Beam's journey into jazz and pop, the same poignant feel of this brilliant musician's tracks is always maintained for the sake of dedicated listeners.

  • Flightless Bird - Spectacular Show!

by CodiB on 4/21/11State Theatre - PortlandRating: 5 out of 5

They opened with Boy with a Coin and ended with Flightless Bird. Fever Dream somewhere in the middle as well as In my Lady's House, which were both amazing! The lighting and atmosphere for the concert was very fitting. They interact with the crowd really well and have very funny comments between songs, puts everyone right at ease. I had to get back for an exam the next day and it was well worth it! I can't wait for them to come back to Maine! This band is a must see!

I'd never been to this venue, but it was nice scale for the show. I stood in the front, about two people back from the front and had a great view. The Low Anthem's set was short and sweet, but still full of soul. Sam Beam was energetic and seemed to really be having a good time at his first Maine show. I was a little surprised at the size of the band (11 pieces!) because it felt a little like Beam was the ringmaster of this big circus that the tour is. But each piece did have its place and the layers of sound they produced were amazing. As he notes, many of the songs have been played with and given fuller arrangements and a more rock-y feel, which is fine, but not the best if you are an iron & wine purist. I would have also liked to have seen The Trapeze Swinger, but there's always next time. After the show I got a setlist, so that was a plus. The next day, I saw him in Boston, where he performed the same core songs but switched a few of them around and threw some others in. Very consistent performances, personable and humble, despite his rising fame.

  • Iron & Wine + State Theatre = great!

    by Jenn55 on 4/21/11State Theatre - PortlandRating: 4 out of 5

They were amazing. The band consisted of 11 people, and they were all great. The background singers were relevant. The horn section, also amazing!

Mostly a really great set. (The rotating lights shining into the audience were kind of painful.) That said, Sam tinkered with the tunes enough to make them perfectly recognizable, but even better than the recordings. What great musicianship from the entire band and Mr. Beam! After seeing him live, I have an even higher opinion of his talent. This latest phase is a bit Baroque for Iron & Wine, but every note from every instrument (including voices) was contributing perfectly to the whole. Swirling psychic goodness!

  • Iron&Wine - Atmospheric!

by JeffMcC on 4/20/11State Theatre - PortlandRating: 4 out of 5

So, not knowing much about these guys prior to the concert, I would have to say they blew me away. Their grasp of rhythm, driving beats, and dynamics combined with a very nuanced but precise orchestration of the 12 contributors in the band was exhilarating. Each song has a unique atmosphere, with sniffs of of Pink Floyd, Radiohead, and even Phish floating you from song to song, verse to verse. Great concert.

  • From acoustic masterpieces to electrified wonder

Sam Beam's craftsmanship in song writing and performing has evolved to level where I believe that he may as well be one of the taproots of the burgeoning musical realm rising from the cinders of an industry burnt asunder by disposable talent and performances. A performance that had my attention and left me inspired.

  • Unfortunate performance

by brettx on 4/20/11State Theatre - PortlandRating: 2 out of 5

Look, I have all of Iron and Wine's stuff. And I appreciate that they came up to Maine. But the show was just not what I was looking for. There were about 12 musicians on stage. That's fine for some of the newer songs, but the wall of sound coming at us didn't work at all for most of the older stuff. And you could barely hear his vocals and absolutely could not hear the lyrics. They took a few of the songs and slowed them down.. draining almost all of the life out of them. I kept hoping that the next song would represent what I love about them, but they never came through. My wife and I actually decided to leave about 1 hr into the show. I've never left a show early in my life. It wasn't the worst show ever, but it really wasn't representative of what they put out on the albums.

  • Meh

I thought this was going to be classic Iron & Wine. Sam Beam and maybe a couple people playing backup, but just very basic folk music. Did not expect to get a band of 11 people and the Pink Floyd-esque 10 minute songs. I think Sam Beam is very talented and he did sound good, but I would not have gone if I knew this was what I was getting. The Low Anthem was awesome as usual, however.

Not a horrible show, but not all that exciting. There were some interesting arrangements of older songs. Overall, I am not a fan of their new sound and It really came out during the concert.

  • Iron and Wine was amazing and NoMo added some jazz

by VoldyVoldyVoldemort on 3/19/11Fitzgeralds - HoustonRating: 5 out of 5

This show was absolutely perfect aside from one annoyance that came in the form of an audience member but even that could not over shadow the greatness that is Sam Beam. If you ever get the chance to see him in concert. DO.

  • Iron & Wine at Radio City was amazing!

by MellowTiki on 2/12/11Radio City Music Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

An amazing band at an amazing venue!!! Iron & Wine was so great. It was a surprise to see the new band members, and to hear how they had revamped many of their old songs, but they still sounded great. And the ultimate cherry on top, was Sam Beam's ridiculous encore performance of The Trapeze Swinger!!! I've now heard it live twice, and it gets better every time. Loved this show! Edie Brickell sounded great, too.

  • Iron & Wine was amazing!!!

I saw Iron & Wine perform for the 1st time at the Newport Folk Festival in 2009 and it was just Sam and his acoustic guitar back then and I fell in love with his sound. So when my boyfriend and I got tickets to the show in NYC I was so excited! He had a big band with him this time around and I thought the sound was just incredible! It was really neat to hear all the different instruments playing together in harmony. I did not recognize most of the songs at the concert yet it was an amazing show so I went right home and bought the new CD. It rocks! I would totally recommend that you check out Iron & Wine if they are touring in your city.

  • Iron & Wine progresses with new album, new sound.

by args on 2/7/11Radio City Music Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

    Amazing re-invention of old songs and well-crafted and written new tunes. Horns blaring, harmony rising, tight orchestration and a beautiful voice defined the show at Radio City. Sam Beam is an artist. Constantly pushing himself to grow and change, he's in my humble opinion, one of the better singer/songwriter/composers out there today.;

Sam Beam's concert at Radio City Music hall with his new band was amazing. I've seen him perform solo, and now with his band, and both times it has been a pleasure to watch a great musician at work. If I had any complaints about the concert, my complaints would be about the hecklers, who were rude and unappreciative of great music and a gifted musician.

Very good! Set the mood for the rest of the night.

Iron and Wine put on the utmost awesome show i've seen yet! Loved how he started out with his normal sound and then introduced his new band and sound. New sound made me want to get up and dance but unfortunately i had to remain sitting so i wouldnt upset anyone behind me but the concert was absolutely amazing

  • Great, if you like musicians, not regurgitation

by movedtobrooklyn on 2/3/11Radio City - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

At one point in the show, Sam made the comment that a song should be alive, not static. Now either you like this concept, or you don't. I can see how anyone that came to the show interested in hearing I&W's "greatest hits" presented in the format in which they were recorded would be disappointed. Many of the songs were presented with different arrangements, and some of them didn't work ("Cinders & Smoke" to a bassa nova beat). Let's face it, not every musical act is talented enough to even try to do this. For me, it was very engaging to watch a musician treat his past catalog organically and felt like a truly "live" performance because of it. I go to shows to see what the muscians are like between songs and to hear something different than off of iTunes. Different strokes....

  • He Is An Amazing Man!

by sambeamrockedmysoxs on 2/2/11Radio City Music Hall - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

The show was amazing from begining to end. Edie was really chill and funny throughout the show and her set rocked. One of the few artist that doesnt need flashing lights and half naked dancers to totally take your breath away, same goes for sam. Once sam took the stage though it was a mind blowing experience. His voice trescended time and space. He proformed songs from both his new and old albums it every single song shined. His band was spectucular as well, compeletly spot on and perfect the entire set. He joked and laughed with us. When he performed naked as we came there was people in my row crying including myself. After the show I was determined to meet this beautiful man and visonary, and the experience was nothing short of EPIC. He was sweet, humble and totally 100% appericative of his fans. He signed my album and I got to hug him! nd take a pic. I spoke to him a lil bit about my family and my 5yr old autistic son, he is a really huge fan as well. His music seems to speak to him and calm him when ever he is having a bad day. When I told him he was totally touched and I have nothing but love and respect for this man. Truly a wounderful musican and person. I cant wait to see him next time he comes to New York.

  • Iron & Wine & the Parliament Funkadelic

by SNOHUGR on 2/2/11Radio City Music Hall - New YorkRating: 2 out of 5

Okay. So, the new record is different, and I get that. Sam has worked through his sorrows/discovered antidepressants, whatever. I can appreciate artistic growth and evolution, and I enjoy the new album on its own. However, there was no need-NO NEED- to go back and reorchestrate (destroy) thoroughly beautiful and meaningful songs with peppy backup vocals , awkwardly random electronic sound effects, and (gulp) a full-on brass section. Until now, I believed Sam Beam could do no wrong. Sam is simply asking a lot of his fans to make this stretch- too much for this fan. My expectations for the show were impossibly high, but I was utterly disappointed with the cheesiness, to the point where my only recourse (other than walking out) was to text my friends in the audience in critique of Iron & Wine's immediate demotion to "adult contemporary". I couldn't decide whether his backup band was the E. Street Band, P-Funk or Paul Simon's band from the Graceland tour. The only song that even remotely embodied the passion and honest essence of the arrangements that enamored his fans of the past was the encore of Trapeze Swinger- Just what someone anticipates when going to an Iron & Wine Concert: a boy, a beard, and his guitar. I would respect this venture a lot more if he'd simply changed the name of his project. Suggestion: Rusted Iron Root Wine & the E Street Band.

Sam Beam put on an amazing performance at Radio City Music Hall! Everything he played was beautiful and memorable. I can't wait to see him again. Also, our seats were fantastic! Thanks for putting on an awesome show, Iron and Wine!
