Iowa State Cyclones Women’s Basketball History
The Iowa State Cyclones fielded their first women’s basketball team during the 1973-74 season and subsequently joined the Big Eight Conference in 1976. Iowa State became a founding member of the Big 12 Conference in 1996 and have since won three conference tournament championships and one regular season conference title. The Cyclones qualified for their first NCAA tournament in 1997 under coach Bill Fennelly, who has continued to build the team into a national powerhouse over three decades. Among their 23 NCAA tournament appearances, Iowa State advanced to the Elite Eight in 1999 and 2009 and reached the Sweet Sixteen most recently in 2022. In the meantime, the Cyclones played in two editions of the Women’s National Invitation Tournament, in 2004 and 2006.

Iowa State Cyclones at Hilton Coliseum
The Iowa State Cyclones women’s basketball team plays in Hilton Coliseum at the Iowa State Center in Ames, Iowa. Opened in 1971, Hilton Coliseum has since undergone several renovation projects to improve the gameday experience, including an update to the lighting system ahead of the 2016-17 season and the installation of an expanded center-hung video board in 2024. The arena currently seats 14,267 and hosts Iowa State's men’s and women's basketball, gymnastics, volleyball and wrestling programs. The arena was named for James H. Hilton, who served as Iowa State president from 1953 to 1965.
