Iowa State Cyclones Men's Basketball History
The Iowa State Cyclones played their first men’s basketball game in 1907. The team has been affiliated with an intercollegiate conference — currently the Big 12 — since the NCAA formed in 1910, when the Cyclones' conference was known as the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
A total of 43 Cyclones have been drafted to the NBA, including 11 first-round picks. Olympic gold medalist Tyrese Haliburton, Olympic bronze medalist Jeff Grayer and Ames native Fred Hoiberg are among Iowa State’s alumni, and the latter returned after a 10-year career in the NBA as the Cyclones’ coach, winning the Big 12 twice and Big 12 Coach of the Year in 2012. Iowa State is currently coached by T.J. Otzelberger, who led the Cyclones to a conference tournament championship in 2024 and two Sweet Sixteen runs during March Madness in 2022 and 2024.
The Cyclones have a long-running in-state rivalry with the University of Iowa Hawkeyes, which encompasses all sports and is known as the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series. The annual Hy-Vee Classic, named for the local supermarket chain, features Iowa State challenging Drake and Northern Iowa in alternate years. The Cyclones' closest Big 12 Conference rivals are the Kansas Jayhawks.

Always great to see a game in Hilton during conference season
The energy at iowa state basketball games is amazing. It was great to be a part of Hilton Magic!
Great time! Will definately go again. Seats were up high but we could still see great! Not a bad seat at Hilton!
Hilton Magic is fun to experience - you can't describe it - you just need to experience it.
I bought the "family pack" tickets that were supposed to come with a hot dog and drink, only to find out that ALL of the concession stands ran out of hot dogs in the middle of halftime. You would think that they would have planned better for all the fans that bought those type of tickets...
Iowa State has been playing great. Seats were good and the environment was great.
If you're an ISU fan, there is nothing like a basketball game at Hilton. Even though the opponent was over-matched by a long shot, the student section and crowd still got into it.
It had been 7 years since I saw a game at Hilton. The Cyclones showed me what I was missing at Hilton this year. Cyclones went on an offensive EXPLOSION!!! Seemed like every 3 pt shot went in with ease. They simply could not miss! At one point, the Cyclones were up by 27 points!!! WOW!! Hilton Magic at it's BEST!
The place was packed, loud and I loved it. Hilton Magic is the greatest influence.
Loved the Hilton Experience. My son, 9 also loved it. He couldn't believe how big the players are in person.
Atmosphere is electric in Hilton Coliseum. No bad seats. Very easy to get to and park. Excellent venue and so fun when ISU wins!
I was highly impressed with the way the people in attendance was so knowledgable and into the game. The student section was a blast to watch. For me it was a pleasure to see the players I read about in the paper up close and personal for the first time.
Great atmosphere and just a great place to catch a Cyclones game.
Great game. Just brought my tickets via my ipad and they scanned them at the door. Very slick!
The only saving grace was those K-State kids. Otherwise, woof.
It was a nailbiting kind of game. Very close and extremely exciting!
The seats were great--you could see all of the action clearly & we were in the upper deck.
It is always exciting to attend events at Hilton. The fans are so exuberant. The players played well as a team and that is always exciting.
ISU basketball game was great....easy to get tickets....seats were awesome!
Had a great time a the game. Nosebleed seats were the best available, and these were purchased months in advance.
