Iowa State Cyclones Men's Basketball History
The Iowa State Cyclones played their first men’s basketball game in 1907. The team has been affiliated with an intercollegiate conference — today the Big 12 — since the NCAA formed in 1910, when the Cyclones' conference was known as the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association.
A total of 41 Cyclones have gone on to become professional basketball players, including 18 Top 10 draft picks. Olympic bronze medalist Jeff Grayer and Ames native Fred Hoiberg are among Iowa State’s alumni, and the latter returned after a 10-year career in the NBA as the Cyclones’ coach, winning the Big 12 twice and Big 12 Coach of the Year in 2012.
The Cyclones have a long-running in-state rivalry with the University of Iowa Hawkeyes, which encompasses all sports and is known as the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series. The annual Hy-Vee Classic, named for the local supermarket chain, features Iowa State challenging Drake and Northern Iowa in alternate years. The Cyclones' closest Big 12 Conference rivals are the Kansas Jayhawks. Iowa State is currently coached by T.J. Otzelberger.

Hilton Coliseum is the greatest venue in America for College Basketball.
Great place to watch basketball. Love those cyclones!
I got 2 free tickets giving blood, so I had to buy 2 tickets. Well worth the money and time. I took my three boys (25, 15 and 11) and myself, which none of use have been to a college bb game. Got there around 11:30, doors where not open yet. So we stood outside for about 15 minutes. Weather was nice, so no problem there. When we got in we found our seats, our tickets were in section 206. We then walked around and got the boys something to eat. The game was great, came right down to the last second. ISU pulled it out only because K State missed a three pointer at the buzzer. We all had a great time and would do it again. Thanks
I drove from Kansas City to Ames Iowa to watch the Iowa State vs K-State game at Hilton Coliseum. The atmosphere at Hilton is always good and the ticket prices are the lowest in the Big 12.
The atmosphere was terrific! What a great family event, thanks ISU!
Hilton is a great venue. Great layout, makes getting in and out easy. Always a Cyclone. Experience Hilton Magic for yourself.
Great to see the ISU Men's basketball tean under Coach Hoiberg. I'm really looking forward to the future in this program. Hilton is 40 years old and showing its age, but still a GREAT venue.
Even though the students have gone home for the Holidays, the crowd enjoyed watching and cheering on these talented men. Cy was hilarious, as usual! Fun to have a great high school pep band and half time performers too.
We had a wonderful time at the game. Cy patted us on the back to welcome us in. The cheer and dance squads were great. The Ames HS band did a fine job. My guys said the game was more exciting than they had expected....so that was a good thing.
There is not a bad seat in Hilton...great experience for the whole family.
The score was 76-73 and could have gone the other way.
The game was fantastic and I greatly appreciated the bring a friend promotion that ISU had for their season ticket holders!
I love going to watch Iowa State basketball. This year is more exciting than previous years. The only problem I had was the tickets. Evidently there was a ticket printing issue. The seats we ordered were not the seats we received. Since I did not bring my conformation sheet I did not know where our seats were supposed to be, but was sure of the section, which was not given to us. In the future I will print the tickets at home (for an additional price, of course) instead of picking the tickets up at will call.
We had great seats for this game and the game was FANtastic.
