About

Detroit horrorcore collective Insane Clown Posse has gained one of the most loyal followings in music over the last 15 years, spawning a legion of makeup-wearing fans known as Juggalos. Band members Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope pioneered the hardcore hip-hop world and spawned numerous similar acts with an elaborate live performance that has made Insane Clown Posse nearly as iconic in concert as their actual recorded material. In fact, every year, thousands of ICP fans gather at the Gathering of the Juggalos, a five-day extravaganza that includes wrestling, games, contests and concerts from the entire Psychopathic Records lineup (co-founded by ICP). One of the first indie artists to develop a massive cult following in the 1990s, Insane Clown Posse tour the country relentlessly, and die-hard Juggalos will boast about how they have purchased tickets to numerous shows. The lively performance often features monsters, dancing clowns, girls and the several hundred two-liters of Faygo (from the group's native Detroit) being shot out into the crowd.

Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope are childhood friends who flipped the rap world upside down with their dark and supernatural take on hip-hop. Surrounding the mythology of the Dark Carnival, Insane Clown Posse has crafted a unique style, leading to two platinum and five gold albums over 15 solid years of recording. "The Amazing Jeckel Brothers" is the group's fifth studio album and considered by many to be their finest achievement. "Boogie Woogie Wu," "Halls of Illusions," "My Axe" and "Mad Professor" are among their greatest hits. Insane Clown Posse continues to represent more than just a name or single album. They are an act with a live performance that is one of the greatest shows on earth.

    ICP rocked Mesa

by thirrtypack on 7/12/09Mesa Amphitheatre - Mesa

I drove from Los Angeles on Saturday afternoon to get to the Psychopathic Records Hatchet Attacks concert in Mesa, AZ, and though traffic getting out of LA was horrendous as usual, the trip was well worth it. When I first arrived in Mesa, I checked into my hotel, and the parking lot was full of cars sporting hatchetman stickers; we did a quick check in, and then we drove to the venue. At first, I didn't think I was in the right place. The Mesa amphitheater is tucked in the middle of a beautiful neighborhood alongside the Mesa Convention Center. After we found parking, we heard Blaze Ya Dead Homie performing, and the crowd was responding enthusiastically. We quickened up our steps, and we made it for the last three songs of his set. Twiztid was the next band up, and they played songs almost exclusively from the W.I.C.K.E.D. album, but in true juggalo fashion, the fans loved every minute of it. Twiztid's stage setup was very intriguing. Maddrox and Monoxide each had a podium that made it look like they were on a high school debate team, but each podium was loaded with eight bright lights that would turn on intermittently. The two did not use the podiums very much because the energy of the performance demanded they roam the stage. Twiztid dressed in black dress suits with white ties which complemented their white face paint. Furthermore, Twiztid had a multimedia performance with videos that matched the songs they performed. The video was a mix of Twiztid performing and twisted images that added a creepy feel to the whole performance Towards the end of Twiztid's set, the sun went down, and dusk perfectly set the mood for the upcoming set of Insane Clown Posse. The crowd began migrating to the stage in anticipation of the forthcoming Faygo rain, and the public address system blasted hits to keep the crowd energy growing. The entire audience took part in singing "Juggalo Family" by Dark Lotus, and that made the excitement tangible as the sky grew darker. Finally, the stage crew erected a huge, light ICP in the bag of the stage, and the road crew guided Faygo barrels and trampolines onto the stage. At the sight of these familiar stage decorations, the juggalos in the audience erupted in applause. Eventually, an ominous soundtrack thundered through the amphitheater, and the ICP lights began flashing in rhythm. Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope took the stage with "Boogie Woogie Woo" from the Great Milenko album, and that began the musical onslaught that changed Mesa forever! The wicked clowns performed countless tunes, and they covered songs from almost every joker's card as well as more recent albums. Highlights of the set had to be "Let's Go All the Way" and "Tilt-a-Whirl." The entire crowd sang along as loud as they could all night, and the Faygo never stopped flying. Shaggy and J had an army of support bringing the soda to the stage, and the clowns drenched the crowd with soda bottles flying in every direction from the stage. The end of the show was truly climactic with the first notes of "If I Was a Serial Killer," and that epic song echoed through the Arizona atmosphere for well over seven minutes. Members of the Psychopathic Records family filled the stage, and the Faygo storm grew exponentially through the entire song while J and Shaggs held out their microphones and let juggalos consummate the Hatchet Attacks experience. The show was amazing, and the crowd was relatively well-behaved. Still, I cannot exaggerate how excellent the staff at the Mesa Amphitheater was. Security was diligent and omnipresent, and amphitheater staffers strolled through the venue with portable misters to cool the crowd. Furthermore, many employees made efforts to keep the grounds clean, and if fans left trash and refuse behind, it was quickly cleaned up. Fans of ICP and Psychopathic Records travelled from many places to attend this show, and both the acts and the employees of the amphitheater gave the fans their money's worth and then some. For me, this experience makes any future Hatchet Attacks a must-go.

Twiztid was amazing! That was all.

    by makram1979 on 7/12/09Mesa Amphitheatre - Mesa

Twiztid performed their entire album, W.I.C.K.E.D., straight through and it was amazing! That was the only highlight for me though. The rest of the concert was ruined by the excessive volume from the venue speakers. At points, they were so loud it sounded like crackling paper. If the volume had been adjusted better, the entire show would have been fantastic.

Nice to see a ton of 'Los and 'Lettes from out of town too. being a homegrown desert rat the heat wasn't a huge problem, but it was hot that day... It was a badass show that makes The Gathering that much harder to wait for. See all ya ninjas in Illinois.
