    Unique and REAL!

by whalecounter on 11/10/09The Music Box at the Fonda - Hollywood

Imogen was amazing! I was so happy she performed, especially considering that she'd cancelled the previous day due to illness. This was my first time attending an Imo concert and I was pleasantly surprised to see her come on stage to introduce her opening acts, while she was still in the process of hair and makeup. She was so normal, for lack of a better word, and i felt like she was addressing us as her group of friends, rather than an audience. Imo sounds just like her albums. What's amazing is to watch her put everything together - all the electronics she uses. You can see the passion in her movements as well as listening to her voice. She's really unique and I love that. The only reason that i did not recommend amazing was that she seemed a bit unprepared for the concert - which she admitted- as she had not practiced as much as she'd wanted. She was also really nervous and forgot the words in songs a few times. Admittedly it was quite cute to see her get nervous, as any of us would if we were performing for so many people, but at the same time, I'd come expecting to see an artist who was used to performing. So, it was a tiny bit frustrating, but again Imogen is an amazing singer. Her voice alone is just so beautiful. I thoroughly enjoyed the concert and definitely recommend you attend, especially if you like to see how she makes music, visually, versus auditory.

    Disorganized Fun

by SlowestZombie on 11/10/09The Music Box at the Fonda - Hollywood

The concert was cool, but there was so much downtime between songs that most of the energy and excitement got lost instead of built up. I definitely enjoyed seeing a very real side of putting together music and wouldn't want that gone completely though. The best way I can think to describe it would be to say I wish there was about 50% more preparedness. Also, a lot of people toward the back seemed to be complaining that the mic wasn't turned up enough. The mic was actually fine during the music - it's only between sets when there was a lot of mumbling, trying to remember lines and checking equipment where the audio was a little low. During the first opening act I had a hard time understanding the lyrics to the songs - both problems probably could have been fixed with better sound testing and planning though. If all this stuff gets cleaned up once the tour is in full swing, definitely yes go see it. If not, it'd be hard for me to recommend it. Tim Exile was great and is the reason I decided to say Yes on the bottom line that I'd recommend this event. I would have enjoyed the event overall even more from the balcony where I could see what's going on on stage a little better and have a seat. It just wasn't the kind of "push your way to the front of the stage" event I'm used to, but something to enjoy in a more relaxed and casual way.

    Magical

by Trevr on 11/10/09The Music Box at the Fonda - Hollywood

Imogen Heap is like a mad scientist, trotting around the stage twisting knobs, pushing buttons, and singing in beautiful, haunting tones. She admitted to being less-than-prepared (coming off a flu sickness), but her humor, charm, and childlike sense of play more than made up for any lyrics she may have forgotten, or songs she may have had to start over. She treated us to almost 3 hours of raw, stunningly beautiful music. Along with her for the tour are friends Tim Exile and Back Ted-N-Ted, electronic musicians who'd be worth the price of admission alone. Too bad the venue was standing room only; watching her in a makeshift, love-crazy mosh-pit was probably fine for most, but a few people cut out early due to sore legs and backs.

    Can't wait til April!

by musiclover23 on 11/10/09The Music Box at the Fonda - Hollywood

It was awesome to see Imogen for my second show of hers. I saw her I think two years ago at the Wiltern and it was my FAVORITE show I've ever been to! She was totally ON! Last night's show was more intimate because of the smaller venue. She basically said she was working out the kinks for her new songs and intruments/equipment, so I'm definitely looking forward to seeing her next April (she hopes) when everything's worked out and maybe it'll be a bigger venue---I think her music carries better in a larger place and the visuals complete the show, which were hard to see from the extreme right side of the standing room floor. Good stuff!

    An absolutely unique artist

by cdax on 11/10/09The Music Box at the Fonda - Hollywood

The wonderful, surprising thing about Imogen Heap was how human she was onstage. She made mistakes during one or two songs. She was just coming off sickness so she felt her voice wasn't all there. But through it all she was personable, hilarious and entirely, unforgettably human.

    Wonderful as always

by Autohypnosis on 11/10/09The Music Box at the Fonda - Hollywood

The first show of Imogen's "Ellipse" tour was brilliant, as her concerts always are. She played most of the new album as well as plenty from "Speak for Yourself." Can't wait till the next time I get to see her.

1st night of the Ellipse tour...

by brnidmel on 11/10/09The Music Box at the Fonda - Hollywood

Imogen is clearly very talented live (my first time seeing her as such) but it was the first night of the tour, and as she stated...a learning experience for the rest of her shows. It was pretty funny watching her fumble a bit and get her bearings and share it with us all right there; it was as if we were chillin' in the studio with her. Her music was great, her vocals were great and her overall personality is awesome; she'd be fun to know. Her band-mates were her opening acts and sadly, they were both horrible. The other downside to it all is that The Music Box at the Fonda Theater is standing room only (floor) and so 3+ hours was FAR too long after lining up outside as well. It was treacherous standing for so long through the awful openers and then Imogen not starting until almost 10:30...she played for almost 2 hours though; would've been better to have spared us the first hour or so of not-her. :)

Rehearsal with no flow of songs left me jitterish

by Dee9 on 11/10/09The Music Box at the Fonda - Hollywood

as brilliant as imogen is and of course quirky and lovable to all her fans, i cannot believe how poor her show at music box last night was. in short, i am wondering why we paid full price tix for a 'rehearsal'. she mumbled incessantly in between songs projecting here every neurotic thougtht and didnt seem to have any idea what she was doing - there were not any 2 songs that flowed into each other - every song stopped with a 5 min pause in between. its a pity, when she finally pulled out her keytar and performed 'hide and seek', it was a magical moment but many people had already started leaving, and understandably so. unfortunately, the only lasting energy for me and my five friends was a feeling of frustration and neurosis from a very poorly planned performance. i'll take comfort in her records and never go to another show again.

    Nearly perfect...

by nbwulf on 11/10/09The Music Box at the Fonda - Hollywood

Hands down this was one of the best live performances I've seen in a long, long time. It wasnt polished, but those additional candid start/stops added to the charm of the show. We could have stayed and listened to her play for another few hours... simply stunning. My only complaint... and I'm sure this more on the venue vs. Imogen... was the general lighting person. This person operating the basic white lights/spots along the front of the stage seemed to have no clue how to operate the equipment. Multiple times Imogen or the opening artists were walking into dark spots that remained dark for more than a few moments. It's rare when lighting can be that distracting and take you out of the moment, but in this case it did several times.

    RAW TALENT

by Anonymous on 11/10/09The Music Box at the Fonda - Hollywood

Imogen Heap was probably one of the most talented artist I have ever seen in concert. She played about 20 instruments. Even though she was unprepared and repeatedly explained that to us, it was probably one of the best shows ever. She took the time to interact with the audience. I cannot wait until she comes back in April!!!!

This show was absolutely amazing. The venue, Music Box at Fonda, is such a great venue!! Imo was awesome as always. Only downside, some guy next to me kept poppin off gnarly gas. Other than that, two thumbs way up.

    Standing for 4 hours...not fun.

by graztaz on 11/10/09The Music Box at the Fonda - Hollywood

The tickets said that their would be seating? yet we had to stand for 4 hours..the pain, the agony....i actually like and respect imogens music, but I could not understand a word she was saying and neither could the people next to me...lol..i think it was due to the english accent, she wasn't speaking to clearly a lot of the time, it was somewhat fast and mumbled... I really liked how she got the audience involved in her songs though, that was great. Pity about the standing for 4 hours and not being able to understand her words...
