Great show sounds just like if not better than the CD. Wish she would come to California more often
You don't have to be a rockabilly fan to dig Imelda. The band is great and the crowd loved it. Imelda has an amazing voice and the energy was WAY up.
Wow! This show was just amazing. I had a better experience with this show than I did when Wanda Jackson played @ El Rey. The show street 45 minutes later versus the one hour at Wanda's show, with the amazing and handsome band Omar and the Stringpoppers. The opening act sure got the audience ready for Imelda May. She on the other hand was magnificent!!! Her vocals are amazing and I appreciated how she connected to the audience by giving small explanations about certain songs and smiling at the audience. Both bands were great performers and I look forward to attending any concerts they have or participate in.
After a lifetime of live shows Imelda live at the Ray is hands down the best I've ever been to. Everyone is close to the stage and Imelda and her boys have real fun on stage. The sets are as amazing to watch as to listen to. The best voice I've heard in ages.
The El Rey Theatre is an excellent-sized venue for a close-up experience with an artist; it showcases their talent (or lack of!). Imelda May is very comfortable on stage, making her delivery look easy, and she commands your attention. The audience obviously "got it", as they remained respectful during quiet passages, and even participated well during the dreaded "sing-along"- after all, this is L.Al! Imelda moved between her songs and nuggets from Soft Cell's "Faded Love", to even Howlin' Wolf! Her Irish heritage has given her soul, and an understanding of the blues to pay proper respects to those genres. She often gives props (well due) to her band, including the very talented Darryl Higham, who is also her husband. Before the set, we discovered people came from all over to see her- even one guy from San Francisco. Come back soon, Imelda!
Imelda May was so amazing. She and her band blew my mind away! I had never seen such great performers in my life. I am a musician, and I could honestly say they have the best of the best solo performers and players. Every note, every rythm was unforgettable. Their stage presence was so awesome. This concert blew my mind. Imelda and her band do an amazing job fusing the blues/jazz with rockabilly. I know that personally, I am going to have to see Imelda May and her band again and again.
I had wanted to see Imelda May since i heard her on Graham Norton. I've bought both of her albums and recommended her to friends. The chance to see her in person was AWESOME and she did not disappoint. What a great singer and band. LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT!!! Thanks Imelda for stopping in the states.
Imelda puts on a show! What a great band, amazing singer and the venue of El Rey was the best.
An amazing, tight, rocking set by Imelda May and her band. From blues to rockabilly, Imelda captured the rock essence of each genre, and not just brought it to life, but exploded beyond. I was dancing the whole performance through and could barely tear my eyes away from the stage. They were amazing to watch, amazing to listen to, and I highly recommend everyone check her out. Her Irish accent was charming, I wish she had talked to the audience more between songs. Also, she carried that whole retro look effortlessly. I suspect every guy in the room was in love with her by the end of her set.
She is a white hot performer, song writer, singer, and talent..... no reason why she could not fill much larger venues. In addition to her wonderful talent on stage, the band really does a fantastic support job, and each member can shine individually during songs. She is a star! A musical gift from Dublin, with music that is normally thought of as American, but she obviously has a gift for belting out songs with gosspil, rockabilly, blues, and jazz influences....Awesome!!!!
