iDKNOW rocks, venue was a disappointment
by Riotous Living on 1/31/22The Depot - Salt Lake CityRating: 3 out of 5It's been a while since concert attendance was possible with all the pandemic related concerns so, when I heard that iDKHOW was playing locally we jumped at the chance to support one of my favorite new bands. Unfortunately, overall it was a bit of a disappointment - not the main band but other issues. It was my first time going to a show at The Depot in SLC. IT's in an historic building but it was really a let down on many levels. First of all, doors opened at 6 pm but there was no explanation as to when the show would start or even if there would be an opening band. It was a cold evening in SLC (in the low 20's) but the long line moved relatively quickly despite the heath and ticket checks to get in. We finally got in just after 7 and took a look around. It was GA so bascially standing room only. I had checked into ticket upgrades but the site said no upgrade available; however, upon arrival we found that there was VIP seating. The opening band - Robert Loud - took the stage just after 8 for a 30 minute set. Unfortunately, in a self-fullfilling prophecy of sorts, the opening bad was a real disappointment. Musical talent was evident but songwriting was unimaginative, repetitive, and uninspired. One song ended up being okay but the others were a let down. Robbie's voice was unable to reach the notes without cracking. Maybe it was a general related to the venue but the sound system was sub-par at best. The singers void was garbled, bass was way to overpowering to hear any musical nuances but again, I'm guessing there weren't many to hear anyway. iDKNHOW took the stage just after 9 and started off with the music we were there to hear. Despite the sound system's failings, they put on a great, entertaining show. Dallon was obviously in his element and Ryan and Anthony kept pace with him. The music was elevating with the crowd able to sing along to most of the songs - Audience participation, cultural references, and great music thrilled the home town crowd. The set list covered many iDKHOW songs as well as delving back into the music from the Brobecks. The show lasted about an hour with another 15 minute encore. In summary, the headliners were great despite venue shortcomings. I doubt I'll attend another GA event at The Depot but I Dont Know How But They Found Me did not disappoint.
