Idaho Steelheads at CenturyLink Arena
Boise, Idaho, is home to one of the premiere teams in minor league hockey. The Idaho Steelheads play in the Mountain Division of the ECHL's Western Conference, and are part of the Dallas Stars organization along with the AHL's Texas Stars. The Steelheads play out of the CenturyLink Arena in Boise, which seats 5,002 for ice hockey and first opened as the Bank of America Centre in 1997. They are coached by Everett Sheen, who replaced Neil Graham in 2019 after Graham took an assistant coaching position with the Texas Stars.
Idaho Steelheads Hockey History
The Idaho Steelheads first took to the ice in 1997 as part of a four-team expansion of the West Coast Hockey League, and are named after a species of rainbow trout indigenous to the area. The Steelheads were instantly successful, making annual playoff appearances under coaches Dave Langevin and Clint Malarchuk, before hiring John Olver for the 2000-01 season. Under Olver, the Steelheads won two conference championships (in 2001 and 2002) as well as having the best regular season record in 2003. The Idaho Steelheads were one of six operating teams and one planned WCHL team to be absorbed into the East Coast Hockey League after the 2003 season, forming the modern ECHL. The move to the ECHL coincided with the formation of a partnership with the Dallas Stars, which has continued ever since, with the exception of the 2004-05 season.
The Steelheads earned the distinction of having reached the playoffs each and every season since their founding, as well as being the westernmost franchise of the ECHL, and the last original WCHL team to exist in their original form. Since joining the ECHL in 2003, they have won the Kelly Cup twice (in 2004, and in 2007 under coach Derek Laxdal). In 2010, the Steelheads won the Brabham Cup for earning the most points in the regular season, but they lost to the Cincinnati Cyclones in the Kelly Cup finals, four games to one. In 2019, the Steelheads placed second in their division, exiting in the first round of the Kelly Cup playoffs after losing to the rival Utah Grizzlies.
very exciting game and glad Steelheads win! Only disappointment was the outrageous cost of the beer. Felt like we were ripped off.
Took my nephew for the first time and my sis n laws bf also first time they had a blast the only thing is my nephews were screaming and cheering and a couple adults that were drinking turned back and said they were excessive and we had to let them know that they are kids and they are enjoying themselves so leave them alone and they sure were drinking being loud and none told them anything but overall we had a great fam time plus Steelheads won 2/22/25 Go Steelheads
We had such a fun night and experience at our first Steelheads game! Lots of bathrooms and food/drink items. We were very pleased with our seats, I’m pretty sure there isn’t a bad seat in the stadium! We sat in the top level
Had a great evening at the Idaho Central Arena watching the Steelies dismantle the Knight Monsters. Spectacular seats, felt like we were part of the action. Just wish I didnt have to get a second mortgage to buy a few beers!
I don’t think there’s a bad seat in the house. Fans were great and lines moved a long quickly enough. Definitely looking at buying into the flex plan next season.
We are Utah Grizzlies' Fans and travel to Boise to play against our rivals the Idaho Steelheads. The Steelheads are great fans, and you can count on getting a fun loving ribbing when you attend. We always enjoy our time in Boise.
As always the Steelheads played an amazing game!!! Cannot say enough good about them! As to the arena, feels like you are in coach in an airplane. You need to make seating more comfortable! Maybe we need a new arena!
So much fun! I will definitely do it again. Not a bad seat in the house.
We really enjoyed the Idaho Steelheads hockey game. Pretty much non-stop action. The reason for the 3 stars and not 5 was that some of our seats were partially blocked by a concrete post. I feel that the ticket selection should list this view obstruction. We would have picked different seats.
in was quick ( maybe open a little earlier then the 6:15ish time for a 7:00 start) fans are awesome.. I had a server !!! ( first time ever)
