Never seen Ian before. He still sings great and he gives it all for two hours! His band was quite good. I'm sorry I've missed him in the past.

    Ian Hunter was Amazing!

by LoungeLizzard on 2/1/11Galaxy Theatre - Santa Ana

71 years young, and going as strong as ever. His voice was great, and the show was exceptional. Ian seems to like the venue as he has played it before. Highly recommend seeing this icon whenever you get the chance!

    Hunter x 2 = A Good Thing!

by Ocram on 2/1/11Galaxy Theatre - Santa Ana

I was fortunate enough to see Ian Hunter the prior evening at L.A.'s Key Club (see my prior review of that show). Though I hadn't been to the Galaxy Theater for quite some time, I wasn't disappointed. Ian's second Southern Cal concert was just as impressive, and the frontman appeared to be a bit more loose -- even sipping wine and champagne toward the end of the evening. The setlist was nearly identical, except that we were treated to "Boy" (from Ian's amazing solo debut) in lieu of "Michael Picasso", and "Letter to Britannia from the Union Jack" as the kick off of the first encore. Ian also omitted "River of Tears" and moved "Girl From the Office" to the second encore. All in all, an incredible experience from one of my all-time favorite artists -- and one who deserves so much more recognition than he gets. Go buy his records, NOW!

    Ian Hunter!

by Bucky58 on 2/1/11El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

Ian was great as usual. He never dissapoints. The spacing was a little strange for one of his shows with almost all the music in the first half except two classic songs (Irene Wilde & Clevelend Rocks) from the last few CD'S he put out. But then to finish off the main set plus not one but two encores consisting of 4 songs then 3 songs he played all vintage Mott the Hoople and a couple of his own songs. He could not have ended the show any better. Can't wait to see him again!

Won't soon forget this performance.... if ever.

Excellent venue - excellent performance by one of the legends of rock n roll. Ian Hunter is 71 years old and still has it. Amazing talent as a singer / songwriter / performer.

    El Rey Rocks!!

by DrJackal on 1/31/11El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

Ian Hunter in a rare performance at the El Rey Theatre did NOT disappoint his eager fans. Playing a tasteful mix of newer songs and older classics, his performance was well paced and vital, not a nostalgia act at all. His newer material is very strong. He saved most of the Mott the Hoople hits for the latter part of the show, and his two powerful encores left the audience satisfied. I was glad to finally get to see him after being a fan since the 1970s.

    The British Bob Dylan Returns

by Ocram on 1/31/11El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

Ian Hunter is simply an amazingly gifted songwriter who has been unfairly overlooked for decades. His body of work speaks for itself, and the faithful were treated to a wide variety of that work, including several cuts from his latest excellent effort "Man Overboard". His touring band was tight, focused and brought a great groove to the tunes. I can only wish that I have the stamina, energy and ability to enjoy myself the way Mr. Hunter did at the Key Club when I'm his age (70). From the opening notes of "Sea Diver" (an early Mott the Hoople song) to the surprising inclusion of "Dancing On the Moon", this was a night to enjoy one of England's all-time best exports. He even covered "Somewhere" from West Side Story as the opener of his first encore, and then treated us to a second encore set, during which he blazed through a tasty Mott medley.

IH at El Rey - Jan 30, 2011

by Rantastic on 1/31/11El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

Ian and Rant Band played a great show. Ian's pipes are in great form and he has amazing energy. A number of standard songs and some surprises in the set list. Started a little late but played a good long and strong set. Band sounded tight too. Ian had one gaffe in the lyrics. He asked the audience for the line (of course we obliged) - gave us all a good laugh.
