    Great voices on stage

by DHA on 12/24/19Bardavon 1869 Opera House - Poughkeepsie

This is the third year we have been to the Bardavon to see Handel’s messiah. We have seen it in many venues over the years. I’m sorry to say we will not go back next year for the following reasons. 1. I do not like the audience singing with the chorus. 2. I feel the only time the audience should stand is during the Hallelujah chorus, instead of the several additional times that they did this year. The performances were excellent. The theater is a lovely venue and very comfortable .

    Appalachian came to Poughkeepsie....

by MGF on 11/19/19Bardavon 1869 Opera House - Poughkeepsie

by way of the Hudson Valley Philharmonic. Jay Unger and Molly Mason, country music stars, orchestrated blue grass music with the orchestra for a wonderful first set. The orchestra followed with the perennial favorite Copland's "Appalachian Spring", which was just close-your-eyes-and-dream perfect. Finally the true star of the evening was Zuill Bailey performing series of pieces by contemporary composer, Michael Daughtery. This work, about Hemmingway's most famous books, was commissioned for Zuill Bailey and he was tres tres fantastique in his performance! Props to the Bardavon theater and the Hudson Valley Philharmonic for bringing classical and blue grass into one seamless program!

    Handel's Messiah

by Pam on 12/26/18Bardavon 1869 Opera House - Poughkeepsie

A childhood friend and I saw the HV Philharmonic's performance of Handel's Messiah. I was so very pleased and satisfied. I was in chorus for 3 - 4 years in high school, and we even recorded an album of Handel's Messiah, so a performance like this as an emotional attachment to it. And, of course, Hallelujah was the best! Everyone in the room (including the audience) sang their hearts out! I had no more room for more goosebumps and it brought tears to my (and others') eyes. Thank you, great time! Classical music is my favorite for Christmas. I was so ready for it after that show!

    I was very leased

by Deb on 12/20/18Bardavon 1869 Opera House - Poughkeepsie

I was very happy with the performance and also all the info that was provided by Ticketmaster before the program. They made it very easy to contact the theater about issues that I had. Also, the directions and all the other info made going to a performance very easy.

    Wonderful evening

by DHA on 12/18/18Bardavon 1869 Opera House - Poughkeepsie

This is the second year we have attended this performance. The orchestra, chorus and soloists were excellent. The only criticism I have is the addition of standing and singing with the chorus. I found this took away from the event. This was not done last hear and I hope it won’t be done next year. I prefer to hear the chorus sing rather than the people around me.

    Outstanding

by MikeFishkill on 10/19/17Bardavon 1869 Opera House - Poughkeepsie

The Joan Tower piece was Picasso's Guernica painting turned into music. During the James DeMars piece R. Carlos Nakai's flute made me feel like an eagle soaring over the buttes and canyons of the Navajo nation. Many thanks to the conductor Randall Craig Fleischer and the Big Read for making this season's Hudson Valley Philharmonic kickoff a great success.

R.Carlos Nakai with orchestra was fabulous

by BMAps on 10/17/17Bardavon 1869 Opera House - Poughkeepsie

I would have sat and listened all night, or gone back the next day; the orchestra was perfection, Native American flute bonus was magnificent. The conductor was superb. Highly recommended.

    HVP The Ninth -- BRAVO!!

by SML58 on 5/2/17Ulster Performing Arts Center - Kingston

I've heard many performances of HVP and have never been disappointed; however, their performance of Beethoven's 9th on Saturday was exceptionally awesome!! I brought my sons, ages 10 and 12, and they were captivated. The choirs (Cappella Festiva and the Vassar Choir) and soloists were all incredible, and my kids especially loved watching Randall Fleischer conduct. BRAVO!!!

The only time I have ever seen a conductor hopping while conducting. It was great! My wife and kids are big fans. See you next season!!!

Not what we hoped for, sadly

by Cimarosa on 3/22/16Bardavon 1869 Opera House - Poughkeepsie

We were attracted to the concert by the program, including the idea of seeing images of the northern lights during Borealis. Unfortunately a lot of the orchestral playing did not seem up to a professional standard, despite the professional-level ticket price. Both of the contemporary pieces struck us as rather pretentious and not very enjoyable. The projection for Borealis was speeded up and gimmicky, It is sad to feel disappointed by our intrepid local orchestra. But we won't be spending $100-plus for another concert any time soon.

The Aurora Borealis show was the highlight for me. The way it was set to music was beautiful and unforgettable.

    Very moving!

by ownedapinto on 12/22/15Ulster Performing Arts Center - Kingston

This was the first time we attended HVP Handel's Messiah. What a beautiful experience! The talent on the stage was incredible! However, I was not expecting the audience members to sing along. It was a little strange hearing just one soprano or one bass singing behind me - it was a little distracting from the angelic voices on stage. But, since I now know it's encouraged, the audience participation would not keep me from attending again. This was just the "recharging" my husband and I needed!

    "America" and Ansel Adams

by Anonymous on 4/14/15Bardavon 1869 Opera House - Poughkeepsie

Philharmonic played beautifully tho I could do without the "Rite of Spring". The photos by Ansel Adams were an ingenious stroke that really enhanced Brubeck's piece. Thank you for a great nite!!!

    Sold-out night at The Bardavon

    by Virginia0421 on 4/14/15Bardavon 1869 Opera House - Poughkeepsie

The Hudson Valley Philharmonic is a local treasure based at The Bardavon that I don't think many people know about. They perform a half-dozen times a year and are always a treat to see. This particular performance and program was the best one I've had the pleasure of attending yet. There was a variety of classics and a visual for the Brubeck Symphony to make things interesting. The concert also opened with a phenomenal performance by Su Jin Lee performing Dvorak's Concerto for Cello in B Minor and finished off with a bang with Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring. Each piece was played brilliantly to the delight of the entire audience. I really hope they play more robust programs like this in the future, the sold-out crowd attests to its appeal.

    HV Philharmonic provided exhillirating sound

by NYrangerFrank on 4/14/15Bardavon 1869 Opera House - Poughkeepsie

I was intrigued to listen and see the HV Philharmonic perform the Brubeck score for the Ansel Adams slide show. That was certainly good and entertaining...but what stole the evening for me was the 'winner' of the strings competition who sat in for the first two pieces of the evening. Sorry, I do not have her name, but her command of the viola provided dessert for the ears. The interplay between her skilled musicianship and the HVP was memorable.
