About

The world inside Tupac Shakur’s music and lyrics blazes to life in an entertaining new musical!

Broadway has always given voice to popular culture and social change.  South Pacific, West Side Story, Hair, and Rent are among the hits that hit home.  Now Broadway gives voice to the lyrics of Tupac Shakur, whose music has sold over 75 million albums.

Holler If Ya Hear Me is a riveting, non-biographical story about friendship, love, change, family and hope—an original work that is at once a love story and an unretouched picture of life in the streets.

The seating in the orchestra level of the Palace Theatre has been reconfigured to create a more intimate experience for the audience.  The stage has been moved closer to the audience and the seats are now stadium style, making every seat prime viewing.

Holler If Ya Hear Me brings together some of the theater’s most prominent creative talents.  Directed by Kenny Leon (A Raisin in the Sun, Fences) with an original book by Todd Kriedler (Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner), with choreography by Tony Award® winner Wayne Cilento (Wicked, How to Succeed…), and musical supervision by Daryl Waters (Bring in ‘Da Noise, Bring In ‘Da Funk, The Color Purple, Memphis.)

Don’t miss this chance to experience the sheer brilliance of one of the 20th century’s most prophetic and influential voices whose message continues to echo throughout our culture today.

The show will begin promptly at the time stated. No late seating.

    "I'm Hollering"

by CBM4 on 7/20/14Palace Theatre New York - New York

I saw “Holler IF You Hear Me” last night and I’m inspired to Holler because I Heard. I heard the story and anguish of the plight of the young African American man trapped in the prison of urban ghetto violence. I heard the cries of the African American woman struggling to be respected through a genre that has profited by degrading her in the eyes of her own children. I heard the words of a modern prophet martyred not because of religion or civil rights but because of a capitalistic system that values dollars over souls. I heard MUSIC that resonated in my DNA to prove that dramatic story telling is not limited to the status quo. I heard an audience cheer and moan and clap and snap their fingers and grunt and shout and yell out Bravo because there arose a voice familiar enough to relate to in real life. I holler because last night I heard yall loud and clear. Yet in the midst of my own personal epiphany I couldn’t help but notice those there who could not hear. The scripture came to mind from Matthew 11:15 “He who has ears let him hear!” Why could they not hear? Perhaps their inner eyes were blinded by the beat or the lack of extravagant costumes, sets or the expected spectacle that accompanies the thought of a Broadway Musical. Perhaps they remain closed minded to rap, hip-hop or urban noise and funk. Perhaps because they did grow up listening to Tupac or running the streets or dodging bullets to get home from school they just couldn’t relate. Whatever the reason there remains a veil that dulls their senses and prevents them from hearing or relating to what was being so eloquently said. Theater is so much more than an art form. Theater is a cultural archive of society forever capturing a snapshot of a moment of time in history portraying who we are, where and how we live but most importantly what we feel. True Art forces you to feel something, ponder the moment and regurgitate those emotions over and over again. Therefore I Holler because I Heard You.

    Tupac lives on

by Borngod on 7/20/14Palace Theatre New York - New York

Where do I start?...first off I saw it twice...my girlfriend brought me here and i didnt expect it to be such a beautiful, intelligent display of how his musical works were interwoven to the storyline plot of this play. The actors/singers/dancers were top notch professionals black & white!....its just sad it had to come to an end due to lackluster sales but i know that was due to poor press which i find ridiculous due to the numerous outlets of online and hard media that it couldve traveled through. Pac would've been proud!

The talent, the music, the story was lovely!

by TLC52 on 7/17/14Palace Theatre New York - New York

The talent that was displayed in performing Tupac's amazing songs is noteworthy. The performers bought his songs to life with such power and grace. The direction and staging is also noteworthy. Each story line transitioned into song seamlessly. Every actor's contribution to this wonderful performance deserved the standing ovation it received.

Great integration of music with drama. There was a message that could be embraced by all ages. Thought provoking, real, yet uplifting. I have already recommended others to see.

The play was awesome and it is unfortunate that many people are not going. It tells an important story affecting many of our youth in inner cities and using Tupac's lyrics as the soundtrack is so cool. I along with others in the audience was bopping and singing along with the actors. Go see it now. You will not be disappointed.

The story line was overwhelmed by all the singing. Additionally, the lead character was very unintelligible when "singing".

It's great to see hip hop and the choreography in Broadway. The dancers were awesome. The acting superb. For me it took a little long for the story to develop in the beginning but I enjoyed how it all came together. The ending was totally shocking! Overall I enjoyed the show. I'm a huge Saul Willians fan, he did a great job too.

by Terrie1408 on 7/14/14Palace Theatre New York - New York

The story line and message is appropriate today, we need to continue the dialogue and seek solution to ills that's killing our youth, way of life and community. The music and dance numbers kept me at the edge of my seat. Saw the show twice within weeks ....; it was awesome!

    Dear Tupac

by Novasmom on 7/13/14Palace Theatre New York - New York

A genius finally gets his due accolades for the ability to take the English language and finesse even the most raw and uncomfortable truths that must be told! Coupled with his unique "swagger", Tupac's art of storytelling was light years ahead of most of his peers, yet right on par w even some of today's most eloquent speakers. There should be college courses based on his writings to be culturally competent and interesting to diverse student bodies. I am thrilled to have gone to Broadway to experience this masterpiece. I will more than likely go to experience "Holler" again! It's that amazing!!!

    Worth seeing!

by DanceMomProf on 7/11/14Palace Theatre New York - New York

Don't let the media reviews stop you from seeing this work. Though there are definitely flaws - a bit too long, strange scenery and lighting choices, predictable story - the words and music and the absolutely incredible and incredibly committed cast all made me so glad I decided to see this show. I hope it "has legs," since it deserves to be showing for a long time to come. The night we went, the cast got a well-deserved, enthusiastic, and rousing standing ovation. I am in my 50's, but I went with a group in their twenties. We all were glad we went!

    Tupac would be PROUD!!!

by Jaieny on 7/11/14Palace Theatre New York - New York

I have recently introduced the world of Broadway theater to my husband. We have seen several plays so it was no surprise that for our 12th wedding anniversary that I would buy tickets for us to enjoy another evening in the city. We, being of generation HipHop, saw the commercial ads for 'Holler If Ya Hear Me' and knew it was next on our list. The show didn't disappoint us and we were captured from the opening act . It was as if we had taken a trip back to the early 90's. The lyrics, sometimes sang, other times naturally rapped were a constant reminder of the greatness of Tupac as an artist and person. The back story, though familiar, was intriguing and held us. The actors were lively and the set was just as ordinary as any city environment that speaks of struggle, education, music, community, and love. It is a must see!!!

Whether you are a Tupac fan or not, Holler If Ya Hear Me is worth seeing. The singing, especially the women, is outstanding. The way Tupac's songs are interwoven into the story line is creative and powerful.

Saul Williams and company were amazing. Hip hop and Broadway are natural partners, and Holler If Ya Hear me is a great production.
