Hip Hop Til Infinity: An Immersive Trip Across 50 Years

by Telma O. on 9/18/23Hall des Lumières - New York

I love Hip Hop. The beat, the vibe, the energy… I loved the show. The location was a great choice, the venue is beautiful and very easily accessible by public transportation. For the duration of the show I felt immersed in this magical world of nostalgic images and sounds from the past and also more contemporary scenes. If you like Hip Hop, I highly recommend it.

A Disservice to Hip Hop History

by popstarr on 9/17/23Hall des Lumières - New York

The history of hip hop is rich with characters, stories, and lore. Sadly, this exhibition is a cheap cash grab whose sole purpose seems to be to make a buck of the backs of the legends who created the genre. To call it “immersive” is laughable. Would have been much more successful if it went deeper into the content to try to educate rather than titillate.

    Fun Experience!!

by Kay on 9/17/23Hall des Lumières - New York

I had an amazing experience at the HHI exhibit! It brought so many nostalgic feelings and memories. Made me feel like I was in a place back in time in the Bronx again. What I would say is that, although I appreciate the representation of women in Hip Hip shown, I wish there were more footage or representation of the other huge record breaking Female MCee’s that paved the way. Other than that it was a beautiful experience.

    Hip Hop til Infinity!

by China on 9/15/23Hall des Lumières - New York

We loved it! Amazing graphics, music and sensory experience. The archival footage was so cool, brought the early years to life. The downstairs exhibit really highlighted the connection between Reggae and Hip Hop. Highly recommend!

Hip Hop Til Infinity is incredible! Gorgeous projection mapping in an historic NYC space. Learning about the birth of hip hop and seeing how it has expanded nationally, and then internationally is mind blowing. Beautiful visuals paired with your favorite songs. It's a party. HIGHLY recommend!

Dope - But I Wanted More!

by Imajen on 9/13/23Hall des Lumières - New York

It's a celebration of the FIFTY YEARS of hip-hop. Understanding that it's a lot of ground to cover, the 40-minute presentation is dope, but my goodness, I didn't see Afrika Bambaataa, Run-DMC, the Fat Boys, Kurtis Blow, Sugarhill Gang, Treacherous 3, Doug E Fresh, Salt N Pepa, Ludacris, Big Daddy Kane, on and on and on. So many of my favorites left out! We needed a whole segment on conscious rap, a whole segment on DJs/turntablism, more on graffiti and breakdancing. Where was Beat Street? That movie changed my whole life! They did brief segments on the West Coast and the South, and they only showed a pic of Ludacris on the wall. Too much focus on the new sound for me, like you could have easily left out Tyler the Creator or just threw him up there for a few seconds. I needed a fuller story. My favorite part was called Heavy Spitters and featured Rakim, the greatest MC to ever grace a mic, IMO. Also featured Nas and others to show the development of hip-hop from simple to complex. This whole thing should've been two hours long, and I would've sat there all day. DJ Clark Kent does the music. Mad Skillz does the narration, and they're both fantastic. The effects/lighting/imagery is wonderful as well. Downstairs was a documentary narrated by Quest Love of The Roots. There was a lot of focus on the Jamaican influence of hip-hop. There's so much more that could've been shown down there. Plus, at other exhibits I've attended in the same space, they had a photo booth downstairs. This would've been a perfect time for an old school hip-hop backdrop. And in the smaller, mirrored room were clips running from Video Music Box. There were some gems, including freestyles from Mos Def, LL Cool J, Busta Rhymes, Special Ed, Nas, etc. The gift shop was also great, but $100 for a t-shirt? Ridiculous. They had some really special/cool stuff, but I wish there had been more for those of us on a budget, like post cards, magnets, notes, etc. I saw only one key ring for $7. The rest was mainly books, records and specialty items. I would love to have seen a commemorative poster. I would've bought that and framed it! One thing I loved was a small box with two flip-up hinges that houses 45s of the entire Low End Theory album by Tribe Called Quest. It was sick!! The box looks like the album cover, as do the 45 covers inside. They're thick and well-done, and the records themselves are red. BOMB! I also saw Eric B & Rakim figures that I loved! Lots to love. Just wish there was more. Hip-hop is such a vast and vibrant culture that has literally influenced the world for half a century. I appreciate the efforts and the love that went into this, and it was worth seeing. I was just a little disappointed that it wasn't longer.

    Great experience for groups

    by LC on 9/8/23

Went and stopped by with a couple friends and was such a fun expereince for a group (especially if you like music). I've been to other immersive shows and typically find them to be pretty boring and lackluster. This was exciting as a hip hip lover and a unique, new experience! Worth checking out!

    by Gus on 8/29/23

REALLY COOL!! I have been to a few of these experiences and overall they are all super boring - This was visually GREAT, music score was fire. Downstairs is also such a dope celebration of the DJ and the mini museum is really cool. If you are a fan of Hip Hop definitely check this out!

    Til Infinity and Beyond

    by AMW on 8/29/23

I couldn’t think of a better venue to put on this event. My only complaint is that I wish the main part was a little bit longer, with a little more detail, but it was a really, really cool experience. Don’t forget to check out the downstairs as there are at least 3 separate “attractions” Even though I didn’t cop anything, the merch was great, and had a lot of different items. Overall, great experience and I highly encourage any hip hop heads to check this out!

    Horrific

    by Reviewer on 8/25/23

Do NOT and I mean DO NOT purchase a ticket to this. This is absolutely terrible, there was nothing to it, cannot believe they are 1 charging anybody for such a thing and 2 that they can even consider this informational. It was basically just an open space with projections on the wall of nothing of importance. TRUST and do not waste your time or money.

    I loved it!

    by Dee on 8/25/23

It was an amazing experience! The music and venue space were fabulous! The visuals were stunning. I enjoyed the rooms showcasing memorabilia and the Vault. One thing I found lacking was a room/space dedicated to the women of Hip Hop or a video montage of them. Overall though I loved it and plan to go again!

    A tourist trap.

    by MB on 8/7/23

Boring projections combined with an extremely succinct history of hiphop. A middling application of the available tech. It will take you about an hour and change to see everything. The room with cassette tape and magazine collections feels like some guy cleaned out his closet and put it in on display. Extremely underwhelming considering the cost. You’re better off watching youtube clips and finding a decently curated spotify playlist. 50 years of hiphop history deserves better than being an overpriced tourist trap. Avoid.
