Hershey is terrific. I saw him do Chopin and when I found out he would be doing Gershwin a few days later I rushed to get tix. He is an accomplished writer, actor, pianist, historian with a marvelous sense of humor and a dynamite ability to engage an audience. Bravo Hershey!!!!!!!!!
Hershey Felder is a consummate professional and a great talent. My husband and I love Gershwin, but had no idea what a glorious evening we were about to have. The story is rich with the history of New York City and early Hollywood. The characters are exquisitly drawn. Poignant, sparkling, thrilling and nostalgic. A difficult story to tell, and yet done pitch perfectly. This performance is gift.
I came with no expectations...and left blown away. What a wonderfful evening of performance, jokes, education, warmth... I'm signing up for Hershey's Chopin show now!
What was surprisingly nice about the show, was how much historical information was presented about Irving Berlin. i knew I loved the music. The audience singing along with the Berlin classics was also a pleasant surprise. An the audience could sing. Tthe only fault I found with the show was that show could have ended with a rousing rendition of " God Bless America" and possibly with "White Christmas". mixed in.
Prior to seeing Hershey Felder As Irving Berlin, I was unaware of Felder. Well, he proved to be an exceptional performer who had me totally transfixed by his portrayal of Berlin. He related the story of the exceptional songwriter who overcame his humble beginnings to become one of the giants of American Popular Song. When he assumed the personae of Berlin, Felder was wonderfully effective. In addition, he is a fine pianist/singer who made each song come alive. Particularly effective was his emphasis on how much Berlin, who was born in Russia, loved his adopted country. When he sang the verse to "God Bless America," I was moved to tears as the words spoke of a nation that has in many ways regretfully disappeared. I could not help thinking of how heartbroken Berlin would be to observe the America of today that does not resemble the exceptional land that welcomed him, and provided him with the opportunity to succeed in the face of overwhelming odds. It struck me that most Americans under 30, or perhaps even 40, would not know the name of Irving Berlin, nor most of the songs that he blessed us with other than "God Bless America" and "White Christmas." That is a sad fact of the low level of our contemporary popular culture.
