HERBIE HANCOCK IN CONCERT:

Few jazz artists have achieved the degree of crossover success enjoyed by legendary post-bop luminary Herbie Hancock. Beginning with 1973's seminal Headhunters, Hancock unleashed some of the most innovative and accessible jazz funk of his generation, and he continues to innovate both in the studio and on stage. As one of jazz's most beloved living legends, the opportunity to see Hancock is the stuff of fan dreams, making his 2014 appearance at the Hollywood Bowl one of the most coveted concert events of the summer.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born in Chicago, Hancock was recognized as a child prodigy from an early age, receiving a classical music education and performing with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra as early as age 11. Despite not having a jazz teacher, Hancock developed a unique harmonic sense by ear, earning a reputation with his exceptional piano playing that ultimately caught the attention of Miles Davis. After joining Davis's Second Great Quintet in 1963, Hancock enjoyed a period of tremendous success and growth as he forged a unique and influential style. His association with the Blue Note label resulted in some of the most popular jazz records of the '60s, but it wasn't until the 1973 release of Headhunters that he would achieve international superstardom. The album marked a watershed moment in the development of jazz funk, skyrocketing to the top of the Jazz Albums chart with now-classic crossover hits like "Chameleon" and "Watermelon Man." Always one to experiment, Hancock pioneered the use of electronic instruments in jazz, and the results, such as the synth-heavy hit single “Rock It,” found head-bobbing fans across the globe. With more than 40 studio albums and a half-century of touring under his belt, Hancock's continued presence on the road in 2014 is sure to be the stuff of legacy and legend.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Herbie Hancock wove all of the jazz classics he made famous in to new arrangements that gave his ensemble a platform to demonstrate their superb individual talents. The group played over two hours and then played an encore."

"Great Show... A nice mix of Herbie Hancock's jazz classics, some newer songs, and an improv piece. Very innovative encore especially if you want to see someone doing a jazz solo with Conch Shells!"

"Virtuoso musicians treated us to unexpected and unimaginably difficult rhythmic interplay. Each player was completely in control of his instrument and contributed equally to the magic of the event. At 71, Herbie brought the fire and burned up the stage."

    Herbie Hancock + Lang Lang

by Jcotten on 8/9/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Both musicians are really amazing in their expression and interpretation of music. However, I think the concert was good, but could be better since many part of the concert there are some obvious timing issues occur...Good but slightly disappointed.

Herbie Hancock & Lang Lang were a major treat!

by BenbolioBoy on 8/9/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

This concert was the perfect marriage of classical and Jazz with the added attraction of the LA Philharmonic orchestra in really fine form. Lang Lang was incredible! A virtuoso performance with amazing style. Herbie Hancock is still one of the coolest guys around with the hottest jazz, and a revelation with his classical chops! A perfect night at the Bowl.

the concert was one of the best collaboration of Classical (Lang Lang) and Jazz (Hancock). Both of them are amazing pianist and fit each other so well. LA symphony Orchestra also provide incredible back up - awesome as always. Both performers have such a great personality, they made the concert became such a memorable night! I would totally go see it again!

    Disappointed by a legend

by DavidAndrew on 8/9/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I'm a big fan of Herbie Hancock, so when I found out that he was playing at the greatest venue on earth (The Hollywood Bowl), I immediately bought tickets for the family. Of my family of four, three of us are musicians, my father being a pianist, I knew he would be ecstatic for the show. Sadly Herbie turned out to be a disappointment, he was playing with the legendary young pianist Lang Lang along with the LA Philharmonic, both institutions are namely classical, and Herbie, despite having extensive classical training, is considered a jazz icon. As Lang and the LA Phil played beautifully, and meshed nicely, Herbie was attempting to improvise over them, this was a poor choice as not only did it corrupt the original piece, but it confused the audience as well as the players. Besides Lang Lang's solo piece which was played perfectly, the entire show was a dud.

    hypnotic

by shakshuka on 8/9/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

The combination between Lang-Lang's virtuosic and light style of playing and Hancock's well-timed and rhythmic structures gave rise to a magical performance. In the first half, the two played (together with the LA philharmonic orchestra) a concerto for two pianos by Vaughan-Williams, an obscure piece which i was not aware of previously. This resulted in magical 25 minutes of truly hypnotic nature. In the second half, the two played both alone and together, going over a range of styles (classical, folk-chinese, and a free-style improvisation with allusion to several known pieces by Hancock). Then, Rhapsody in Blue by Gershwin came along, with a wonderful performance of both pianists and the orchestra, This was a rather broad interpretation of Gershwin's piece, leaving a lot of space for the two to express their own music and style. This final piece drew long standing ovations from the audience. What a wonderful evening.

    A Failed Marriage

by Bumdorks on 8/9/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

The Phil opened with Marriage of Figaro, which was the best part of the whole evening. Then Mssrs. Hancock and Lang entered and proceeded with an almost unlistenable mixture of piano duets and symphony. Maybe we are just not sophisticated enough to appreciate this stuff. But, it seems like the audience "wanted" to like it and though it was important and significant, so they just acted along with the performers. The bowl is great but I guarantee that if you were alone in your car and any of these songs came on the radio, you would switch it immediately. Love old and even new Hancock, like classical and the Phil. Hate the two together.

    Herbie Hancock/Lang Lang

by CindyL on 8/9/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Absoluately fantastic!!! The most incredible rendition of "Rhasody in Blue" I've ever seen or heard. The energy and synergy between Herbie Hancock and Lang Lang was extraordinary. Possibly one of the best H. Bowl concerts I've been to in the past several years. Also great acoustics -- the LA Phil sounded fabulous.

Herbie Hancock and Lang Lang not much bang bang

    by beech57mike on 8/9/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

The first half, was long and uninteresting. The audience was lost to music that was not defined in it's direction of where it was going. I felt it was " a cop out" so to speak for the artists to kill time in the first half of the evening because of the huge musical challenge that they faced. The music was totally "impressionist" and was rooted mainly in a pentatonic format. That style of music for the length of time played just dips the listener's ears into a musical abyss. The second half was finally what people paid to hear. Lang Lang started with one of his signature pieces and the evening grew in a musical challenge between the artists. I have to say that Herbie stepped up to the plate in the second half and played quite well.

    Not so much

by masterp on 8/9/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Went to the Herbie Hancock concert with my wife last night -- It was a beautiful night and the picnic/champagne concept was lots of fun. As far as the music however --- NO JAZZ!!! I was expecting a full band.. drums, bass, etc.. The LA philharmonic was great and of course Herbie and Lang Lang are gifted pianists -- but was expecting improvisation and jazz combinations from their performance.. Instead, we got 50 minute pieces from Gershwin that were so 'heavily classical' that we really didn't enjoy it! Too bad --- we spent LOTS of money on tickets, transportation, and food. P.S. Josh Grobin made a surprise guest appearance -- he sang a pretty song, but the arrangement was too bizarre for us to enjoy (because of the 2 pianos/classical style) - It was almost as if the melody and backup pianos were in 2 different keys! (Yes, I am a musician).

Herbie and Lang Lang: Magical Moments

    by KwanYin4 on 8/9/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Saturday night, Hollywood Bowl. Herbie, Mr. Cool in his white tux, was commanding and eloquent. Lang Lang, in his sparkly black jacket, was bouncy and fun and a nice counterpoint to the master Herbie Hancock. The first number together, Vaughan Williams piano concierto, was romantic, soft, meandering, perfect in this outdoor venue. The Los Angeles Philharmonic, with conductor John Axelrod, was up to the task of accompanying these two piano virtuosos. I loved Axelrod's obvious delight, especially while conducting "Mambo" from West Side Story.

Excellent concert! One of the best ones I have seen. It is so grand, great, marvellus. Absolutely a high class concert. It is such a pleasure to watch two great pianists and performers play. I would recommend it to everyone I know. I also like the settings of hollywood bowl, the atmosphere is very nice and cool. I would take my family to more hollywood bowl events. Also the good thing about hollywood bowl is there is shuttle bus. It is convenient. I am so looking forward to next concert in Hollywood bowl.

Mr. Herbie Hancock...yep! Mr. Herbie and Mr. Lang

    by Henryd8 on 8/9/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Beautiful music was played in a great atmosphere of the Hollywood Bowl last night. The legend Mr. Herbie Hancock with the company of the classical piano of Lang Lang filled the air and made the crickets sing in tune. It was surprising to see a mix of Jazz improv with some classical oriented songs of Lang Lang. And to see a different tempo for the famous Cantaloupe Island of Hancock was also a unique feature of the event. Both eminent piano players engaged in what I would call a gentleman's duel in the piano, but all with a good sense of humor. Lang Lang's finger's as well as Herbie's were some times hard to follow over the keys of the piano.

    Awful!

by Bobina on 8/9/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Not at all what we expected! No jazz or 80's, only classical, which is fine, but not when you expect to hear "traditional" Herbie Hancock. Left halfway through the show.
