HERBIE HANCOCK IN CONCERT:

Few jazz artists have achieved the degree of crossover success enjoyed by legendary post-bop luminary Herbie Hancock. Beginning with 1973's seminal Headhunters, Hancock unleashed some of the most innovative and accessible jazz funk of his generation, and he continues to innovate both in the studio and on stage. As one of jazz's most beloved living legends, the opportunity to see Hancock is the stuff of fan dreams, making his 2014 appearance at the Hollywood Bowl one of the most coveted concert events of the summer.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born in Chicago, Hancock was recognized as a child prodigy from an early age, receiving a classical music education and performing with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra as early as age 11. Despite not having a jazz teacher, Hancock developed a unique harmonic sense by ear, earning a reputation with his exceptional piano playing that ultimately caught the attention of Miles Davis. After joining Davis's Second Great Quintet in 1963, Hancock enjoyed a period of tremendous success and growth as he forged a unique and influential style. His association with the Blue Note label resulted in some of the most popular jazz records of the '60s, but it wasn't until the 1973 release of Headhunters that he would achieve international superstardom. The album marked a watershed moment in the development of jazz funk, skyrocketing to the top of the Jazz Albums chart with now-classic crossover hits like "Chameleon" and "Watermelon Man." Always one to experiment, Hancock pioneered the use of electronic instruments in jazz, and the results, such as the synth-heavy hit single “Rock It,” found head-bobbing fans across the globe. With more than 40 studio albums and a half-century of touring under his belt, Hancock's continued presence on the road in 2014 is sure to be the stuff of legacy and legend.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Herbie Hancock wove all of the jazz classics he made famous in to new arrangements that gave his ensemble a platform to demonstrate their superb individual talents. The group played over two hours and then played an encore."

"Great Show... A nice mix of Herbie Hancock's jazz classics, some newer songs, and an improv piece. Very innovative encore especially if you want to see someone doing a jazz solo with Conch Shells!"

"Virtuoso musicians treated us to unexpected and unimaginably difficult rhythmic interplay. Each player was completely in control of his instrument and contributed equally to the magic of the event. At 71, Herbie brought the fire and burned up the stage."

    Herbie's show left me empty

    by 2374 on 6/16/10Eastman Theatre - Rochester

We were very disappointed with the Herbie Hancock Show. The musicians were great, but the choice of material left us empty. Didn't care for the singing and the volume was overwhelming. Would have much preferred the acoustic setting with a trio or with Wayne Shorter.

    Herbie Hancock

by Whatdoyouwantnow on 6/16/10Eastman Theatre - Rochester

Good concert overall. However, the blending of music in the 2nd half was not that appealing. It took some of the best sounds out of the blended portions that were put together. I'd like to Hear Herbie Hancock play Herbie Hancock music!

Eclectic, fabulous, great show with lots of energy. Lighting was almost as impressive as the music. A very worthwhile performance. I just wish we weren't glued to our seats - a bit of a dance wouldn't have gone amiss.

    Rehersal at the Eastman

by TomJazzlover on 6/16/10Eastman Theatre - Rochester

I attended with great anticipation the Herbie Hancock performance at the Eastman Theater only to be very disappointed. Herbie tried without success to give a a view of his soon to be released project. He shared with us the outstanding list of artist that appeared on the album. Then he used people who maybe skilled musicians but not one was able to deliver a vocal that was acceptable. The absolute worst was Herbie's version of Sam Cook's "A Change is going to come". The vocalist was just not capable of delivering the soulful vocal the song deserved. I will confess that at the beginning of the night Herbie warned us that this maybe a rough ride. I had no idea how bumpy a ride it was going to be and at 10:15 it seemed like someone yelled fire in the auditorium people where falling over each other leaving. I heard later that he played until 11:00 PM. I guess even greatness can have a bad night.

High energy show from Herbie Hancock

by Funmusic on 6/16/10Eastman Theatre - Rochester

Herbie and the excellent musicians touring with him were clearly enjoying themselves and the audience during this 2 1/2 hour show of non-stop music. They covered a wide range of styles and played with energy and enthusiasm throughout. This may be hard to believe but some of the grooves were so contagious that if this show were played in an outdoor setting in a less conservative town I would expect many people to be out of their seats dancing. The opportunity to hear this level of playing does not happen very often.

    70? No Way - He's Amazing!

by DAnthony on 6/16/10Eastman Theatre - Rochester

Tough to believe that Herbie is going to be 70 years old - the guy really is a musical genius - I can't wait to get the new CD due out Tuesday - he gave us a little taste and left us wanting more! He hasn't lost a step and in fact he just keeps getting better! Thanks Herbie (and Tal - she is in her own world too!)

    Herbie Hancock Dissappointment

by livvallatimmy on 6/16/10Eastman Theatre - Rochester

The first 3rd of the show was great, however the rest was a total disappointment. People came to hear Jazz, and other "known" herbie hancock songs. It is understandable that the they must choose tunes to promote their new CD, however more than 75% of the concert was just that. The concert went from a great concert with Herbie doing his thing to Yani or John Tesh crap music. Jazz, that what this festival is, an Jazz festival. For the amount of money this cost me, the concert was a pure disappointment. People were bailing out during the show when he went into his new stuff. The two out of 5 rating speaks for it self, less than half the show was good, the rest a total disappointment.

    Majestic fun!

by jrockitcoolcat on 6/16/10Eastman Theatre - Rochester

Since I saw the first show of the tour I don't want to give it away, however I must say that with 3 strong vocalists, you're in for a treat. The music ranges from a cacophony of jamming to a wonderful pianissimo piano, along with several classic Herbie songs. Be prepared for stunning solos from all the artists!

    Herbie's Lament

by XRIJFguy on 6/16/10Eastman Theatre - Rochester

Sad to say, but Herbie Hancock's show was a disappointment. The set list was uneven with too much vamping. It was the opening of the tour and it showed. That exposed the melodic shortcomings of guitarist Lionel Loueke, who should learn the head to "Round Midnight." Greg Phillinganes' role was unclear, and Vinnie Colaiuta was so high in the mix that Tal Wilkenfeld's playing was largely lost. For a pianist whose melodic and harmonic explorations put him at the pinnacle of jazz pianists, we expected more.

    WOW Herbie

    by TFOY2 on 6/16/10Eastman Theatre - Rochester

WOW is THE word. What an incredible group of musicians (new artists and veterans). This was a fantastic concert that lasted over 2 1/2 hours. Herbie has got IT. He has had IT for a long time. If you get the opportunity, go see him. You will not be disappointed.

Herbie starts his tour in Rochester

by Jazzana on 6/16/10Eastman Theatre - Rochester

Herbie Hancock started out his tour here in Rochester with energy, humor and Herbie style, but with changes. It was almost a 3 hour concert that felt like a really great rehearsal. They worked out some kinks along the way and they really had fun up there. Tal Weidenfeld is an extraordinary young bassist who just seems to love what she does and at 24 years old, has already played with some of the best. Herbie was his personable, easy going self, and it's impossible to believe he's turning 70 in the next month or so. He's revamped some of our old favorites - Watermelon Man, and Chameleon, and played songs off of his new cd. Last night featured new vocalist Kristina Train who has a rich and soulful voice. The crowd loved it and I imagine it will only get better with each city.

    Funked out

by ROCjazzfan on 6/16/10Eastman Theatre - Rochester

I know that a musician must extend his boundaries and continue to grow but when you have a once in a lifetime chance to see Herbie Hancock in Rochester, NY you want more of him, less of his band, especially if they're playing loud synthesized music that just blasts you out of your seat. He was amazing at times and the audience loved him (except for those who left after the first song). I'm glad I went, but wish there'd been more of him, and less noise. I'll still buy the new album based on the taste he gave last night.

The music grows within the love of the human race

by BoneYard on 6/8/10The GRAMMY Museum - Los Angeles

The venue is wonderful, a must if to join for going to a museum sake. It was uplifting to see a musician that is still growing and bending toward different styles. He was magnanimous in the passion and memories from child to current interest. Thank you Robert Santelli and Herbie Hancock for the pleasure and honor to be part of the history called Jazz.. Mary

Unbelievably fabulous. Hancock is charming, reflective, totally genuine and an amazing human being. He was open, gracious, funny and enthusiastic about life. The video that was shown of the new album about to be released should be widely distributed. This musical genius is awesome.
