About Harlem Gospel Choir

Harlem Gospel Choir on Tour

Raise your hands and praise the Lord when the Harlem Gospel Choir comes to town. An internationally renowned ensemble known for big voices and an even bigger spirit "inspired by God to be even more inspired," Harlem Gospel Choir packs all the energy of a mass choir into a nine-piece ensemble that includes two roof-raising contraltos and four titanic tenors. Expect an energetic night of hand-clapping, foot-stomping excitement as the choir performs a repertoire that includes gospel hits both old and new, traditional music and the occasional pop hit. The choir has toured extensively across the United States and abroad, becoming the first American gospel group to perform in Australia, New Zealand, China, Russia, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Serbia, Slovenia, Samoa, Thailand, Burma and Morocco. They have performed for three Presidents (Barack Obama, Jimmy Carter and Nelson Mandela), two Popes (John Paul II and Benedict XVI) and the United Nations General Assembly. And they have recorded with Keith Richards, the Chieftains and Trace Adkins, among many others.

About Harlem Gospel Choir

Entertainment-industry veteran Allen Bailey formed Harlem Gospel Choir on January 15, 1986, which also happens to be Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday. The choir's nine-piece touring groups, accompanied by two instrumentalists on drums and keyboards, draw from a pool of some 40 members. They divide and conquer by touring the world while maintaining an all-you-can-eat Sunday-brunch residency at Sony Hall in Manhattan's Times Square. A typical show includes Kurt Carr's "In the Sanctuary," Israel Houghton's "You Are Good" and Kirk Franklin's high-octane "Looking for You," along with gospel standards such as "Oh Happy Day" and "Amazing Grace." The choir also does astounding things with Beyoncé's "Halo" and traditional numbers such as "When the Saints Go Marching In" and "Every Time I Feel the Spirit." As Allen Bailey modestly told Ohio State University's The Lantern about this tuneful spiritual vessel, "We only have one superstar in this group and that's Jesus Christ, superstar."

The event was pretty nice, the food was good and the atmosphere was very good, the only complaint i have is that the seating arrangement was very tight! and i did not like the fact that the event sold alcohol during a gospel gathering. Other than that, my wife and i had a wonderful time!

  • Music & food good - VENUE SUCKS

by SirLaughalot on 2/15/10B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 1 out of 5

They pack too many people into the club, too many people at a table. It was too crowded and too hot to enjoy the meal or the music. Is money THAT important? At $40 a pop, and basic breakfast/lunch food, you can afford to take a few chairs out of the place so that people can enhoy their meeal and the music. I won't do this again...cost too much for so little comfort.

  • Harlem Gospel Choir was Inspiring!

by troublebymeredith on 1/18/10Jo Long Theatre - San AntonioRating: 5 out of 5

I need 5 more stars available because 5 stars is not enough. I felt like I was in church only better because everybody was standing up. The voices together were amazing and each voice seperately was unbelievable. They know how to engage and include the audience. I ended up on stage twice and truly felt a part of the group especially because I was dressed just like them. The people sitting behind me thought it was planned. I went with two of my sisters, one nephew, two nieces and a great nephew we all had a ball praising the Lord and we all enjoyed the tribute to Michael Jackson. Our seats were incredible and my only regret is we have to wait so long to see them again and although I do not know how long we will have to wait, I know it is too long.

This acoustics were very poor. The female voices sounded squeaky.

  • Harlem Gospel choir

by Nicknalmlemd on 1/17/10Jo Long Theatre - San AntonioRating: 2 out of 5

Even though this was the abreviated choir, 9 out of 40 choir members, it lacked spiritual luster. More than half of the show was secuilar songs, ... Kool and the Gang, R-Kelly and Michael Jackson. The creator of this miniature choir bragged so much about himself and the choir. I had wished the full choir or more of the members were present.

  • Take the Gospel Out of the Title

by TwittercomRiverwalkSATX on 1/17/10Jo Long Theatre - San AntonioRating: 2 out of 5

The Harlem Choir did a fine job entertaining but left me very empty in terms of the Gospel music. The Harlem Gospel Choir's choice of songs were dated (I Believe I Can Fly) and conjured up bad thoughts about the song writer R. Kelly. The Michael Jackson tribute was fine -- I actually enjoyed it. One suggestion is to lose the Billie Jean song -- it has no inspiration and really a poor song selection for a Gospel Choir. Jackson's "We are the World" was great, "Man in the Mirror" was appropriate. Finally, the "Celebration" song by Kool and The Gang is dated...and not gospel -- and the Gospel songs performed were written in the 70s and 80s. Maybe I expected something different -- but I felt the Gospel Choir failed to deliver Gospel. I thought in segments it was like they were playing church vs really being an example of the church.

  • Harlem Gospel Choir Lost Focus?

by Trishkaboom on 1/17/10Jo Long Theatre - San AntonioRating: 2 out of 5

First half is what I came to see and probably should have left at that point because the second half left something to be desired. A tribute to Michael Jackson was just a bit too much. I'm a BIG fan of Michaels too but this was not what I wanted to see. One or two songs, okay but please, not the whole second half! And can someone please tell me when Billy Jean became a spiritual song. "The Big Boss" said when the Choir played for the Pope that the Pope made a comment: "the Choir was more than a show, it was a feeling"....I'm wondering , did they forget and start doing a show? Did fame and big name invitations cause blinders to go on the eyes regarding the mission? Also totally disappointed in the CD I bought...All Michael Jackson songs...where is the gospel in this choir?

  • VERY FEW GOSPEL SONG

by FOREAL4U on 1/17/10Jo Long Theatre - San AntonioRating: 1 out of 5

I though that I was going to hear gospel songs and instead hear was pop. A lot of Michael Jackson songs were sung and none of the gospel songs that I pay for were sung. Very dissapointed in the entire concert. If I wanted to hear pop songs I would have went to the local bar or better yet, went to a Church and heard gospel and gave them my ticket money of $50 bucks....

  • Sunday Gospel brunch was perfect !

by ladybird2007 on 1/4/10B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

lots of food available for the brunch. Really nice gospel show. We ate very well, danced and sang a lot ! I strongly recommend this show.

  • Great gospel choir experience

by Gary26 on 1/3/10B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

Read many good and bad reviews on this show. The food and the show was good, as long as you go there with the right perception of the show being a gospel food and the food being soul food! Would recommend.

  • The show was great - Be careful with the seating

by Tourist0000 on 12/29/09B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 1 out of 5

In all fairness I have to give 4 different ratings: The Show - 4 Stars The Food - 3 Stars The Service - 2 Stars The Sitting - 0 Stars, they first put me in a table behind a column and only after saying that I would leave imediatly they found a center stage table. How about that. It just ruined the moment

  • very disappointing

by VeryDisappoint on 12/28/09B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 1 out of 5

for the $42 that we paid per ticket, one would expect that one of the two elements - the performance or the brunch would at least be worth it. Neither was. The food was bland, watery and tasteless for the most part, and the tables were overcrowded. The performance itself lasted less than 1.5 hours, the songs were for the most part covers of pop songs and they talked way too much between performances. I expected a much grander performance, with much more heart and soul, and not some pop concert-like entertainment. At the end, when you gave them $5 suggested donation, they wouldn't even lift their heads up to smile for the picture...Extremely disappointing, would not recommend this event to anyone.

  • Great!

by 1Anonymous2 on 12/28/09B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

We had a great time, even though it was COLD outside and the cue was really long to get in. The music was great and we could have enjoyed about an hour more! Keep it up.

  • Fun and affordable family day

by NJDave on 12/28/09B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

I'd recommend this to anyone and have taken two different groups of family. The singers have great voices and personalities. The food was about average, but I love brunch period. B.B. King's in general is one of my favorite venues.

  • Great music and food. Watch the drink prices!!

by NYVisitor1 on 12/15/09B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

This was a "rockin" experience. I'm not a very religious person, but I was shouting Amen and Hallelujah right along with the rest of the crowd. The Harlem Gospel Choir was tons of fun to watch, listen to, and enjoy. Brunch was truly southern (I know...it's where I live) and delicious. WARNING: DO NOT ORDER alcoholic beverages unless you know the price first. Our party of 4 ordered 7 drinks. They were doubles (i.e. "tall", not packed with alcohol); bloody marys, screwdrivers, etc. The cocktail bill was $178.00. WOW!

  • Not enough gospel song

by Idaho1963 on 12/7/09B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 2 out of 5

I'm sorry to say it but after a visit to a baptist church in Harlem this was not good enough. Too little gospel choir song and too much "entertainments" and celebration of anniversaries.

  • by Marinamar on 11/30/09B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 3 out of 5

It was tottaly different than me and my mom expected. While the lady spoke we could not hear anything she was saying thefore understand a word. She looked funny even though I couldnt say. The band was very poor making it look very amature. We have the concept of a choir with a lot of people.... there were not a lot of people on stage.... that was definetly not a choir. They chose modern music to sing so people stood up and danced. It's a fun show but definetly not a gospel choir kinda show. The food was good. The seating very good. The service very good.

  • If you love Praising God, this is it!!!

by TNParker on 11/9/09B.B. King Blues Club and Grill - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

I simply enjoyed the Gospel Choir. They had me clappin, stompin, and I simply remembered as I do quite often why I fell in love with Jesus. Now the food was o.k. the peace cobbler which is my favorite needed a lil' help from heaven, but overrall both myself and my husband had a blast. They really know how to engage the crowd as well!!
