Happy Together Tour in Concert

When the Happy Together Tour rolls into town, a beautiful kind of magic trick occurs. For just a little while, the cares of the current world seem somehow to melt away as the sound of a free, colorful era long gone rises up in the air once more. It gives us all a glimpse of what it was like to live in that golden moment of the 1960s, when the glorious vocal harmonies of The Turtles and their contemporaries came bursting out of just about every radio and jukebox in America.

When Turtles frontmen Flo & Eddie — and the rest of their '60s pop/rock compatriots on the bill — step up to the microphone, the years melt away as the hits of the Aquarian Age come back around. It's enough to make even the most jaded listener believe in the possibilities of flower power again, for at least as long as the concert lasts.

Happy Together Tour Background

Few bands embody the spirit of classic '60s pop like The Turtles, fronted by the legendary Flo & Eddie, aka Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan. A quintessential exponent of the summery-sounding, harmony-heavy "sunshine pop" coming out of the West Coast in the mid-to-late '60s, The Turtles stamped their name on pop/rock history forevermore with indelible hits like "She'd Rather Be With Me," "You Showed Me," "Elenore," and, of course, the immortal "Happy Together."

In 1984, Flo & Eddie mounted the first Happy Together tour, bringing the sounds of the '60s to a new era on a bill with The Association and other like-minded peers. Over the years, a lofty list of '60s heroes have joined The Turtles on the tour, including The Cowsills, The Buckinghams, Gary Puckett & The Union Gap, Chuck Negron of Three Dog Night, and The Classics IV, giving contemporary audiences a taste of that old-school magic.

    Turtles were great

by Rulty on 7/15/11Keswick Theatre - Glenside

The show was a lot of fun. The Buckinghams were good, the Grass roots were ok, they need a better lead singer now that Rob Grills is gone. Mark Lindsey has a lot of energy and sounded very good. The Association could drop one of their guys. The Turtles were fun.

    Happy Together 2011 incredible

by KlaatuBob on 7/14/11Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom - Hampton Beach

While times have changed, and band members have changed, The Happy Together Tour had some original members from 4 of their bands, and members with more than 25 years with the 5th band. The music was great. The stories and jokes were wonderful. The song selection was unbeatable. Winner this time around (not that it's a contest) is Mark Lindsay for the most amazing voice!

For any fan of 60s music this was a real treat..original musicians from 5 great bands. Sure they are a bit older, but it was a fun night with amazing songs....all their biggest hits. Brings you right back in time as everyone sings along.

A wonderful walk down memory lane!!

by spikekatie on 7/12/11Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom - Hampton Beach

This show is highly recommended for anyone who grew up in the 1960's!! The sold out show opened with "The Buckinghams", followed by "The Grass Roots", then "The Association", "Mark Lyndsay" (former lead singer of Paul Revere & the Raiders) and finally "The Turtles", who interlaced humor, along with their hit songs. Impressive was the energy and seasoned vocal talent of these performers, many of who are in their mid-sixties! It is doubtful that many of today's performers will have the stamina to perform at such a level 45 years from now! "The Buckinghams" and "The Grassroots" were my favorite acts, with "The Association" probably the weak link in the show. The finale included all of the performers taking the stage together and each performing a brief encore of one of their big hit songs. I was surprised to learn that the "Happy Together Tour" is in it's 25th year! Overall, the show was a thrill and worth the pricey tickets! ($60.00) Go see them while you still can!

All your good time memories come back!

by NHFan55 on 7/12/11Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom - Hampton Beach

Every performer was terrific. All the songs I remembered they sang. The crowd really enjoyed this event. The venue was comfortable. I had the best time and even after all the years that went by I got the chance to shake a hand or two at the stage. Sure glad I went!!!

    Awesome bands from the sixties!

by Notfadeaway on 7/12/11Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom - Hampton Beach

All the bands played and sang great at Hampton Beach on Sunday night! The back-up musicians were also incredible! Terrific sound mix, you could really hear all the vocals! Mark Lindsay is a fantastic showman and in great shape. The Turtles, with all their humor, sang their songs with perfection! The Buckingham's and Grass Roots actually rocked a lot more than I had expected! The Association's harmonies are quite complicated on their recordings and probably hard to duplicate live but they nailed it on a couple of tunes. If you liked these groups in the sixties, don't miss this show. You will not be disappointed!

    Everyone was 'Happy Together'

by ArtWriter on 7/12/11Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom - Hampton Beach

I hadn't been to the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom since seeing the Righteous Brothers years ago. I really didn't know how the seating might be or what to really expect from the performance. Entering the ballroom was easy and painless. There were ushers to assist in finding your correct seat. Two people were found to be seating in wrong seats (intentionally or not). The seating was a bit crowded but somehow it worked. You could sit relatively comfortably even with overweight people at next table. Food and drink were easy to obtain from the bar or from a waiter/waitress. The prices weren't out of sight. The gold seating is the best! I was probably five tables from the front (don't share my secret) and was able to see and hear the performers very well. There was probably only one instance when the band was so loud I couldn't hear the lyrics. The performers were fabulous, what a line up! I thoroughly enjoyed the concert and have spoken well of it to friends already!

    Distorted view

by TVTomT on 7/12/11Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom - Hampton Beach

We arrived early to get settled in our seats and was seated by an usher. JUST when the show started, 4 people showed-up saying that we were in their seats. In the middle of a dark, crowded room, an usher tried to re-seat us. After we had climbed over people, chairs and tables to get to our seats (while the show was going on), it was difficult to get comfortable because everyone else was correctly seated and we were sideways. Oh well...as for the show...I love seeing the old bands and hearing hits from the past. They all worked hard and put on a good show....BUT...all rock bands think that louder is better...and that might be true for acid rock bands but I don't consider the association, the turtles or the grass roots punk rock. Maybe Mark Lindsay fits that genre but loud is OK as long as you don't reach the point that it's just noise. It was not just me as everyone around me agreed...why do have to reach the point of actual DISTORTION so the song is not recognizable. In the end, I would have given this 5 stars if the seats were facing the stage (impossible to adjust with the room available) and if I could actually hear the singers. Maybe they feel they can't sing anymore so they have to drown them out. I don't think that's the case but I wouldn't know... You might think I'm just whining about loud music...but believe me, that's not the case. I love my music loud and raunchy with the more booming bass the better but just not to the point of distortion...it's just not what music is all about.

    We were Happy Together!

by Diane55 on 7/12/11Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom - Hampton Beach

The place rocked with a smiling, singing, involved audience. We went with a group of old friends and the music made us feel young and alive, we had a ball and will do it again hopefully with more of our crew.

    Oh What a Night!

by SWhiplash on 7/12/11Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom - Hampton Beach

Each of the 5 acts did a 30 minute set of their best hits. It was like being at an all-star game as we were treated to nothing but their best. At the end they came out one group at a time for a great final. It was a great trip down memory lane particularly for those who grew up in the 60's who are now in their 60's.

    Happy They're Together

by DucPilot on 7/12/11Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom - Hampton Beach

This was a great show. Yes, I know that some of the bands have changed personnel and not everyone was there but the back-up band did a great job filling for those not present. It was the essence and the heart and soul of great music from the late 1960s, music that still stands up to the test of time today. This was "classical music" in the true sense of the phrase. These bands set the standard that others had to match. The Grass Roots were an unexpected bonus to the show. The line up was the Buckinghams, Grass Roots, The Association, Mark Lindsay, the Turtles, and the finale had everyone on stage.

Back To A Time That Was Great

by Jacksongram on 7/12/11Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom - Hampton Beach

Thought that the Grass Roots were incredible. They sounded just like they always did. Loved Mark Lindsay. Can't believe he is in his 60's. Still a great performer. Really enjoyed the Turtles, but felt their show was too short. Did not enjoy the Association. The lead singer did not sound good at all. Time to retire that band. Buckingham's were really good.

The Buckinghams and Mark Lindsey surprised me!

by TJeff on 7/11/11Toyota Presents the Oakdale Theatre - Wallingford

The two least known groups were the two that were most satisfying --the Buckiinghams and Mark Lindsey of the Raiders. I exected t be disappointed by Mark Linsdey, but instead was floored by his energy and good, old rock and roll. The Raideirs had many great hits --not often heard today on the radio-- that sounded surprisingly edgy and current. The Buckinghams surprised me too. The two originals were youthful, and their voices sounded as good (or better) than their records. Yes, the Turtles were great, and the Association sang their hits (but struggled a bit --could have used one more good voice). And the Grass Roots sounded good even without their lead. But I counted the surprises as the best.

Happy Together made us happy together

Concert was surprisingly good. All but 1 act [The Association] still have good voices.
