About

Fairy tales ROCK, especially this story featuring the fearless sibling duo of Gretel and Hansel! Still reeling from the disappearance of their mother and classmates, Hansel believes with all of his heart that he’s found a way to rescue them deep within The Forbidden Forest. Doubtful, the streetwise Gretel follows in pursuit of her dreamer brother. When they come across a candy house, their bond and beliefs are put to the test until love saves the day.

This story is brought to musical life through the talents of The Grimm Brothers Band performing a live rock and roll score. Nationally produced playwright Ernie Nolan teams up with GRAMMY -nominated ‘kindie’ artist Justin Roberts to create a wickedly delicious musical treat for the entire family.

Great Family Play for Young Children

by OakParker on 1/2/15Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

My family (including my 3 yo and 4 yo) really enjoyed the play! We all liked the music-we even purchased the soundtrack and listen to the songs in the car. My daughters did not seem to find the storyline too scary, even with the mean witch. It probably helped that the girls were able to meet and take a photo with the characters after the play. The witch doesn't seem so scary when you're sitting right next to her.

    Hansel & Gretel Outstanding!!!

by carkaicalalacam on 1/2/15Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

What amazingly talented actors/actresses you will see in this play! Beautiful voices, accomplished instrumentalists, believable characters! Entertaining for children and adults. The Broadway Theater Playhouse was the perfect intimate setting for great visuals and actors playing out into the audience. My age 3 & 5 year old granddaughters loved it! And we did, too! It was the highlight of our 4 day visit to Chicago. We will definitely be back to see what else the Emerald City Theater has in store for its audiences!!!

If the market were for children, it was very confusing. We took 3 grandchildren and they were bored--as we left, there were no wow smiles and "Could we see it again?" It was too loud with lots of shouting and loud music. The children were too grown-up looking and the very tall man in the lady's costume playing the part of the witch looked ridiculous. The traditional story of Hansel and Gretel had too many liberties taken--no candy house to speak of, no Hansel in a cage, no big oven. Where was the Hansel and Gretel story? It was hardly recognizable. We were disappointed in the cast, performance and storyline, and felt it was a waste of time and money to drive from Wisconsin to show our Grandchildren such a ludicrous and bizarre production. It was a total dissatisfied let down.

    Great experience!

by MB29 on 12/30/14Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

The length of the show was perfect for the age of the audience. I wish that the songs would have been a little more kid-friendly and easier to understand. The kids were still able to follow the story line and enjoyed the plot. My nephew was amazed with the fact that the musicians were also keys actors in the show. Meanwhile my niece really enjoyed the dancing and movement on stage. Although our seats would be considered great, I would recommend not sitting in the first 5 rows. It felt like we were too close and the performance was focused on the audience behind us. A couple of times the actors came into the crowd and the kids found it hard to follow/ see them. Overall, worth seeing...such a great experience for kids and adults alike!

Hansel & Gretel is a fun telling of the old story. Cast was good at getting the children interested and involved in the story. The sing-along at the beginning was a great way to get their attention focused on the stage. We didn't take any children with us but enjoyed the show greatly.

    just ok

by abotti1 on 12/30/14Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

The play was just ok. I was thankful that the story was rewritten in a more kid friendly way. I was disappointed in the manner in which it was produced. Since they are also trying to market the songs from the show, the band took up a large portion of the stage leaving literature room for the actors to tell the story. It felt cramped. My daughter laughed some but overall wasn't very thrilled either. If you just want to take your kids somewhere to get out of the house, this will do.

Fabulous for the whole family! Super cute and hilarious. That cat was the best cat I've ever seen. The actress really channeled her inner cat.

Show was only 1 hr 15 min but was great! Very fun music! A lot of space between the rows for a small theater. Not a bad seat in the theater. Our children enjoyed it!

    Audience Ages

by IAintGotAName on 12/26/14Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

This was, in fact, a very fine performance. I only rated it 3 stars because I expected the story line to be relatable to a 6-year-old. It wasn't. II'd like to suggest recommended ages for future performances.

Hansel & Gretel (Chicago Broadway Playhouse Boring

by GrandpaLarry on 12/23/14Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

Though supposedly targeted at children, this adaptation was too dialog heavy and boring for our 5 and 7 year old grand-daughters. You can imagine how boring it was for us older folks. The set decor was uninviting--isn't that what the candy house in the woods was supposed to be--really inviting?

    a fun morning

by Fench on 12/23/14Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

well acted, interestingly presented version of the story; a little scary for little kids but fun. I especially liked the actors meeting with the children after the performance.

    Interesting adaptation

by Mrssims on 12/17/14Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

The music was great for adults but my 7 year old grandson was tired of it 3/4 thru. Another song was painful. The characters and sets were clever but songs are difficult for young children to understand lyrics so the crowd was antsy near the end. All in all a good day but could have been better.
