About

Fairy tales ROCK, especially this story featuring the fearless sibling duo of Gretel and Hansel! Still reeling from the disappearance of their mother and classmates, Hansel believes with all of his heart that he’s found a way to rescue them deep within The Forbidden Forest. Doubtful, the streetwise Gretel follows in pursuit of her dreamer brother. When they come across a candy house, their bond and beliefs are put to the test until love saves the day.

This story is brought to musical life through the talents of The Grimm Brothers Band performing a live rock and roll score. Nationally produced playwright Ernie Nolan teams up with GRAMMY -nominated ‘kindie’ artist Justin Roberts to create a wickedly delicious musical treat for the entire family.

Great for the kids during the holidays

by Spiketon on 12/2/14Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

I took 2 nine year old boys who loved the performance . They were mesmerized by the fact the actors also played in a 'rock band.' All actors had double duty playing musical instruments. Very creative production-loved the cat! The music was an important addition to the play. Although the drums were too loud at times. Performance lasted 1:15- no intermission. Great theater. The boys thought it was more fun than a movie and better than the play BFG-which we recently saw.

Sweet and entertaining for adults too

by 4inchicago on 12/2/14Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

We were looking for something to do over the weekend in Chicago -- this play was the perfect start to our Saturday; it has a good dose of humor and is entertaining for both children and adults. Group consisted of a talented cast of 20 somethings who seem passionate about theater, acting and music and want to inspire the next generation.

Hansel & Gretel amazing for entire family

by EvanstonDad on 12/2/14Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

We took our four kids-- ranging in age from 15 to 3 -- to see this show last weekend. All four of them grew up listening to Justin Roberts' amazing music (the youngest is the latest fan), and so there were high expectations. We also had a grandmother in tow, in her late 70s (she had never heard Roberts' music, but we prepped her in the car -- completely unnecessary). So with 7 people ranging from 3 to upper 70s, all of whom I polled, I can attest: this show is great for all ages! Seriously the music is fabulous and fun. If you are already a fan of Justin Roberts' music you won't be surprised that there is one great new song after another, in a range of rock styles and also some real Broadway-bound show stoppers as well. I seriously was humming the songs all weekend after the performance we went to. And it's funny, smart, and entertaining. The production is great -- having seen several "family" musicals in Broadway theaters in NYC, I think this one is totally at that caliber and I would think destined for the big stage. See it now while it's in Chicago and with tickets in the $30 range (they'll be five to seven times that if it goes to NY!) Get your tickets while you can. I also preordered the CD recording in the lobby -- which is in post-production now I learned, so will be shipped to my home-- and can't wait to get it. I want to hear some of those great songs again ("Crumb by Crumb", J Roberts' take on the famous breadcrumb scene, is stuck in my head). What else? The running time of the show was about 80 minutes, without intermission, but our 3 year old was engrossed the whole time, and I didn't see or hear any of the other young kids in the audience distracted either. And let me repeat, you don't need to have kids or take kids to go to this. Definitely a rock musical for all ages, but completely kid friendly (and if you're not kid friendly, you might think twice, I guess). And though I knew Justin Roberts himself wasn't performing in the show (he wrote the song and lyrics), two of my kids were surprised not to see him up there. But the performers are amazing -- great voices, wonderful actors, and most of them doubling on instruments on the side of the stage (which range from electric guitar and drum kit to violin and cello and a saxophone solo that is a showstopper) when they are not. Plus, big bonus, the theater gives out parking validation for Water Tower Place -- so you can park there all day for only $15 if you're driving down with family from the suburbs. After the show, we had lunch at Food Life in Water Tower Place and then walked around Michigan Avenue. Make it a day!

    Great first Big Show experience!

by dolphins02 on 12/1/14Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

I took my nine year old cousin for her b'day... probably one of the best things I have done! She has never been to a real play/musical, and she loved every moment! She enjoyed getting autographs after the show and taking pictures as well. I enjoyed this as an adult as well!

    Wonderful for the Entire Family

by DutchGal on 12/1/14Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

My sister and I were blown away by the wonderful production of Hansel and Gretel. We went thinking we'd endure it for the kids but thoroughly enjoyed it, as did my parents. I wasn't expecting a musical and the musicians/performers were absolutely fantastic. The storyline was well adapted and entertaining for all ages. The music was upbeat and fun and the cast did a FABULOUS job! Afterwards Hansel, Gretel and the Witch signed autographs for the children and were great with them. I would happily go again. My only regret is I did not purchase the soundtrack when we were there.

    I Want My Money Back

by unsatisfiedjadey1 on 11/25/14Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

This was the worst theatrical production I have ever seen. Simply put, it was poorly written, poorly produced and had a very limited budget. It is meant for children, but there was nothing in the story line a child could relate to. I have seen copious Broadway productions and this is in line with a grade school play. Neither one of my daughter (5, 11) enjoyed it and one even requested to leave. They used a quarter of the stage and never changed scenery or costumes. Please do not waste your money. I received discount tickets and feel as though I was ripped off.

Hansel and Gretel really does rock!

by Madridmamacita on 11/25/14Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

Wow! Talented, animated cast and musicians! This rendition of Hansel and Gretel was different from other productions I've seen in that live music is preformed by some of the actors as they go in and out of character. One minute the violinist is playing her violin next she seamlessly transforms herself into the witch's cat! Hansel and Gretel's mother plays electric guitar. The wicked witch was mesmerizing and deliciously evil...and she played the sax! A quality production for sure. Beside the familiar story line with its valuable life lessons for the children, I love that the musicians were part of the production. What better way to show children that playing a musical instrument could be for them as well. Congratulations Emerald City on a great production.
