About

Haken In Concert

In prog and metal circles, few young bands have made more of an impact than Haken. The London group wield a sharp eye for adventurous arrangements and instrumentation, and they aren't afraid to take risks — whether they're exploring sprawling post-rock on 2014's Restoration EP or incorporating inspirations from synth-heavy 1980s prog on 2016's Affinity.

Tapping former Periphery bassist Adam Getgood to mix 2018's Vector was an even smarter move. In his hands, head-spinning tracks like the single "Puzzle Box" — whose music includes Tool-caliber chugging, intricate hard rock, and synth-driven rhythmic scrambles — offer a fresh spin on progressive metal. Vocalist Ross Jennings often sounds like a dead ringer for Incubus' Brandon Boyd, in the way he never loses the melodic edge to his keening vocals, although his range is such that he can also turn on a dime and be gruff when need be.

Jennings and Richard Henshall co-founded Haken in 2007. The band — whose name has no particular meaning, members have said — put together several demos and started playing out. From there, things accelerated quickly. Haken first inked a deal with Sensory Records, which released the band's first two albums (2010's Aquarius and 2011's Visions). The band then jumped to Inside Out Music starting with 2013's The Mountain.

In 2016, the members of Haken served as live instrumental backup in Mike Portnoy's Shattered Fortress, the ambitious project helmed by the former Dream Theater drummer. Not only was that a sign of respect from one of progressive metal's biggest names, but it also underscored Haken's monstrous live abilities.

Incredibly, the band navigates disparate tempos and styles with ease in concert — don't be surprised to catch an air drummer (or three) having a ball in the crowd, as Haken's members themselves smash stereotypes and add charismatic flash to their performances.

    Beyond Expectations

by HakenFan on 3/4/24Somerville Theatre - Somerville

An evening with Haken was easily one of the best shows I've ever seen. The opened with Fauna in its entirety and played it flawlessly. They even added a few interesting musical interludes (movie themes) here and there between songs. After that, they continued to play, take a short intermission, and then deliver another 1.5 hours of music. It was a lot of notes. The Haken guys compose, arrange, and orchestrate so well that it never feels like "too many notes". The crowd was clearly appreciative and would have stayed for another 3 hours if that was possible. I'm still buzzing from the show 3 days later!

    Amazing

by Shaw Strength on 3/4/24Somerville Theatre - Somerville

Haken is one of the best live acts going! Awesome live show and the setlist was great! I saw them in CT and NJ. One thing I would say is that the backing vocals need to be higher! Ither than that the sound was on point!

They were great. They were on point with all the songs they played, especially with the new material. Definitely would recommend seeing them to anyone thinking about it.

Just What I Was Waiting For

    by Bea123 on 3/1/24Roxian Theatre - Pittsburgh

The day after 2020 lockdown, we were supposed to see them with Devin Townsend. Well, we saw Devin Townsend over the summer and almost exactly four years later we got to see Haken. They were utterly fantastic, all live and a full Evening with Haken. They are now in my top performances - along with Porcupine Tree, Opeth, and Apocolyptica. Their merch was the first concert I’ve been to that every shirt was great. Now, you may be wondering why four stars instead of five if they were so fantastic? Well, they were the only group playing and started 30 minutes late. The other part is the lights were brutal. Take sunglasses if you plan to go.

An Evening with Haken in St. Charles!!

    by Alexa T. on 3/1/24

They sounded phenomenal. I flew to St. Charles, IL to catch them and I was blown away. Performed and sung better in person than they did on any of their albums. If I had one complaint, it would be that the bass was mixed too quietly. I couldn’t hear a bass solo that I should have been able to. Aside from that, everybody there loved them! They came back when we all cheered for an encore and got a performance of Visions that was fantastic. Glad I got to see them do a double set. I’ll be waiting for their next tour to see them again.

Haken in Toronto: A Solid Performance with Room for Growth

by Darva on 2/28/24The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

Haken's concert in Toronto showcased the band's technical skills and diverse musical influences, and the sound quality was excellent. However, the performance lacked the energy and engagement that one might expect from a progressive band. While the musicianship was impressive, the show felt somewhat lackluster, and I found myself struggling to stay fully engaged. Nonetheless, Haken's potential is evident, and with some adjustments to their live performance, they could easily raise the bar. Overall, I would rate the concert a 7 out of 10, with room for improvement.

    my first heavy metal concert

by Indyshort on 2/26/24Old National Centre - Indianapolis

This group has a lot of talented musicians! Although it is not my music genre of choice, we enjoyed the concert. Hopefully word will get out that this is a great band and when they return to Indiana, they will have a bigger fan base.

A night of Rockin and Proggin like no other

by AlexB2112 on 2/25/24Delmar Hall - Saint Louis

One of the best concerts I've been to, and i go to a lot of concerts. The music, incredible and played extremely tight. I have no idea how a band does so many time signature and chord changes and never misses a beat. Vocals, incredible Sound and audio, incredible Energy, ecstatic Beer, definitely good! If you like a good hard rocking proggy band that keeps the audience at the edge of their seat, Haken is for you! 10/10 would see again. If they went on tour with Dream Theater i may actually be lifted to heaven.

    Ohmygod

by BustaLimes on 2/24/24Bogart's - Cincinnati

I bought tickets for this show for my partner, two close friends, and myself. We all really enjoy this band, and they in no way disappointed. The sound, the lights, the venue, the energy. I could write a book about how amazing this show was. But in short, the venue was a 10, the band was a 10, and the staff working was an 11. I would pay for this show a million times and never regret it. I did not have a single moment that was stressful or unexpected. I "won Christmas"according to my friends for buying them these tickets. Amazing. Amazing. Amazing. I can't say it enough! The best show I've ever been to, easily.

    Great show

by KurtB on 2/24/24Delmar Hall - Saint Louis

Haken was great. There were two sets. The first included their full new album Fauna. the second set was a song from each of their albums. The sound was really good. It was a little loud for the venue so hearing protection was needed. The band was spot on with all of their songs. Vocals were great. I would definitely see them again.

    Excellence!

by Progist on 2/23/24Delmar Hall - Saint Louis

If you have the chance to go see An Evening With Haken...DO IT!! Their sound was flawless and amazing, they played for almost THREE hours, and no stone was left unturned. They took us on a musical voyage with songs from each album...but only after they completely blew us away by playing, Fauna, in its entirety. This experience was everything and more!!

    Amazing Live

by RickC on 2/22/24White Oak Music Hall - Downstairs - Houston

I highly recommend going to see this group. I was so happy the encore song was Visions. They did an amazing job live in Houston. I would go see them again. I flew from Florida to see them and it was 100% worth it. Pure professionals.

Fantastic performance in uncomfortably crowded seats

by Spaz on 2/21/24Tannahill's Tavern and Music Hall - Fort Worth

An Incredible 3 hour set! Starting with their latest album in-full, from start to finish! I wish I could have enjoyed every second of the performance, however the fold-out seating left me and everyone else in the venue with barely enough room to stand-up, let alone allow someone to shuffle past you...so my concert experience was constantly disrupted by awkward foot traffic and bumps from neighboring concertgoers. This should only reflect poorly on the venue, not the artists, but I found it to be very unaccommodating seating for the audience.
