Haken In Concert

In prog and metal circles, few young bands have made more of an impact than Haken. The London group wield a sharp eye for adventurous arrangements and instrumentation, and they aren't afraid to take risks — whether they're exploring sprawling post-rock on 2014's Restoration EP or incorporating inspirations from synth-heavy 1980s prog on 2016's Affinity.

Tapping former Periphery bassist Adam Getgood to mix 2018's Vector was an even smarter move. In his hands, head-spinning tracks like the single "Puzzle Box" — whose music includes Tool-caliber chugging, intricate hard rock, and synth-driven rhythmic scrambles — offer a fresh spin on progressive metal. Vocalist Ross Jennings often sounds like a dead ringer for Incubus' Brandon Boyd, in the way he never loses the melodic edge to his keening vocals, although his range is such that he can also turn on a dime and be gruff when need be.

Jennings and Richard Henshall co-founded Haken in 2007. The band — whose name has no particular meaning, members have said — put together several demos and started playing out. From there, things accelerated quickly. Haken first inked a deal with Sensory Records, which released the band's first two albums (2010's Aquarius and 2011's Visions). The band then jumped to Inside Out Music starting with 2013's The Mountain.

In 2016, the members of Haken served as live instrumental backup in Mike Portnoy's Shattered Fortress, the ambitious project helmed by the former Dream Theater drummer. Not only was that a sign of respect from one of progressive metal's biggest names, but it also underscored Haken's monstrous live abilities.

Incredibly, the band navigates disparate tempos and styles with ease in concert — don't be surprised to catch an air drummer (or three) having a ball in the crowd, as Haken's members themselves smash stereotypes and add charismatic flash to their performances.

    Awesome band, Boring crowd

by Dan on 3/11/24Center Stage Theater - Atlanta

The band was awesome, as expected! Would have preferred a standing-room only venue. Everyone just sitting in seats at a show like this just didn’t seem right, and took away from the ability to really get into it.

    Incredible

by Hobby on 3/9/24Center Stage Theater - Atlanta

I love their music. I was skeptical of how good they would be live, especially the vocals. But Haken were incredible. Blew away any expectation I had. The vocalist sounds amazing, better than the record. The band is tight, music is truly heartfelt. Highly technical, no missed notes. Great show and energy. We need more US tour dates!

Band was amazing sound was mediocre at best

by Jh on 3/8/24Somerville Theatre - Somerville

Could only make out drums and vocals in the upper ranks. The musicians were killing it though. Super impressed by that vocal range continuously delivering the entire night. Good energy and awesome little interludes. It was a fun night.

    Awful: off-key yelling; erratic drummer

by Andrew on 3/4/24Somerville Theatre - Somerville

First, in the very busy Somerville Theatre lobby, the table (limiting accesss to balcony stairs) and wall display of T shirts said: heavy marketing! Within 3 minutes of their start I was annoyed with the singer's not much modulated yelling. 3 hours of his yelling, continually, cringingly, off pitch! Drummer is the absolute worst drummer I have ever seen. Yes, battering around his kit all night, but he could NOT put more than 8 beats in succession to support rhythm without deciding to break it up! His erratic high hat (often a drummer's pulse) showed he isn't capable of establishing a steady pulse. The instrument sound was a mash of noise. Recently saw Dakhabrakha here, similar seats. Clear rich harmonies, percussion instruments, cello, accordions. Musical creativity of a high order. Absolutely the polar opposite of this yelling mess. Awful.
