About

Hadestown at the Walter Kerr Theatre

While based on the oft-told Greek myth of Eurydice and Orpheus' descent into hell, Anaďs Mitchell's folk opera ‘Hadestown' just might deliver audiences to musical-theater heaven. A dozen years in the making, ‘Hadestown' was first performed as a stage production in Mitchell's home state of Vermont. In 2010, to enthusiastic acclaim, she released it as a concept album featuring indie-folk stars Ani DiFranco, Greg Brown, Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, the Low Anthem's Ben Knox Miller, and the Haden triplets (Petra, Rachel, and Tanya). Mitchell expanded the album into an Americana musical quilt with the help of Tony Award–winning director Rachel Chavkin (‘Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812'). It premiered off-Broadway at New York Theatre Workshop on May 6, 2016, and ran through July 31. March 2019 marks its Broadway debut, with opening night planned for April 17.

About the Show

In ‘Hadestown,' Mitchell inventively updates the myth of Eurydice and Orpheus to a post-apocalyptic setting reminiscent of the Great Depression. The narrator, Hermes (Tony-nominated André De Shields), calls it "an old tale from way back when." While economic misery and environmental calamities afflict the land, the underworld has become a model of full employment thanks to Hades, who wants to construct a wall to protect the jobs of his mining minions.

While Eurydice (Tony-nominated Eva Noblezada) seeks economic security in the overworld, her beloved Orpheus — played by denim-clad singer-songwriter Reeve Carney, originator of the title role in Broadway's ‘Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark' — possesses a more poetic soul. Amber Gray plays Persephone, queen of the underworld, who cherishes the summers she is allowed to spend "on top." When Hades (Patrick Page, the Green Goblin in ‘Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark') convinces Eurydice to join him in Hadestown, Persephone convinces her husband to give the couple one last chance to leave the underworld together.

A blend of classic storytelling and contemporary concerns, ‘Hadestown' reverberates with relevance. It's also a heartfelt celebration of American music in all its emotional richness and down-to-earth pleasures. And don't worry: In ‘Hadestown,' the devil has only some, not all, of the best tunes.

    Capivating, Creative, Moving

by Shugalize on 4/24/19Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

The performance was stunning. Every actor lived his or her role deeply throughout the musical, telling the story beautifully and convincingly. I appreciated the highly professional and skilled group — the quality of every vocal part was superb, the acting became life. The stage, though not large, was used with great creativity, supporting the season and location changes seamlessly. I brought my 15 year old niece who performs at the Palm Canyon Theatre in Palm Springs to Hadestown and we were both extremely pleased. Thank you.

    Must see

by P. E. on 4/24/19Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

The show was amazing, the music was fantastic, the stage was awesome. Hades and Hermies really commanded the show and Orephies was fantastic as contrast to Hades. This is definitely a must see show and is one of the few shows that you really want to go back and see again.

    Beautiful, heartbreaking, inspiring

by Chris on 4/23/19Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

Some experiences are hard to describe. The individual notes would be the staging, the music, the acting, and the story. These notes were woven together so compellingly stepping outside the theater was a shock. Hadestown is a world in and of itself.

So nice I saw it twice

by KC on 4/23/19Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

There is not much I can add to the accolades this show has received except to say that having seen it on Monday night, I went back and saw it again Saturday afternoon. With my New York time being limited, this is quite a recommendation since there is so much rich material to enjoy running right now. But the reasons I felt it important enough to warrant a second viewing were: 1) I originally had an orchestra seat and for second viewing, saw it from the mezzanine. Had great view, but leg room is nonexistent, but audience was so into the show, that the coziness actually worked in our favor. 2) I really wanted to catch this particular cast perform again -- it was perfect, each and every cast member was amazing as was the staging. I'll definitely see it again. Not since Hamilton have I been this in love with a show.

From the very first number, I was pulled in. The set, the music, the story, the performances... I can't say enough about this show. My husband and I bought tickets for my daughter's 16th birthday and we are so happy we did! We are Broadway fans and have seen many shows. This is our new favorite!

    Best. Musical. Ever.

by Rob Corell on 4/23/19Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

As the show opens, the actors and musicians assemble and relax comfortably onstage. The narrator asks them "Aight?" They give a thumbs up and then he checks the audience: "Aight?" and we're good. Had me from that first, inclusive second and kept me gripped all the way through the a capella song after the immediate and enthusiastic standing ovation. Fantastic ensemble piece, exceptional music and storytelling, perfect lighting/sound and the purpose-built rotating stage enabled fluid, natural physicalization. Even though it's a tragedy, I felt joy. Go see it.

Most visually stunning show I’ve seen in years

by Maddy on 4/23/19Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

This show is absolutely stunning from start to finish. Powerful songs, gorgeous set and costumes and a striking story. This is a must see for broadway fans and folk/jazz music fans alike. I can’t stop thinking about this performance. A timeless story that is as relevant today as ever in history bringing forth themes of hope, climate change, love, despair, immigration, freedom, privilege, struggle, and poverty. See this show NOW. It is worth every penny. And the Walter Kerr is a gorgeous theatre with a great slope so there is not a bad seat in the house. I recommend the mezzanine for a great view.

LIKE A SANDWICH; THE ENDS WERE GOOD

by JACK on 4/23/19Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

The opening was great; dancers very good; the lead male and female singer just so-so but my wife and I could not get into a theme that made any sense about the play that was good. We left after ACT 1 and went to Hurly's Irish Pub across the street for our act 2 ; fantastic. This is only the 2nd play we walked out on in 20 years Can't recommend you see this, but everyone has their likes/dislikes

    Go see this show

by Kat on 4/23/19Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

The acting. The music. The technicality. The story. Everything about this show is beautiful, engaging, well told and...did I mention beautiful? I cannot say more good things about Hadestown - Anais Mitchell is a master song writer, and Rachel Chavkin brought an old story back to life with an astonishing level of creativity. "Wait for Me" alone gave me chills.

Go to Hades(town) - You'll be glad you did!

by P. L. on 4/22/19Walter Kerr Theatre - New York

Trust me - invest the time and ticket cost to see this new musical - you'll be very glad that you did. A couple of years ago, a talented fellow decided to relate American history of the revolutionary era using rap music and it seems to have done well, so why not repackage Greek mythology in the style of a New Orleans jazz club? By all rights, that should be as successful ... and in my mind it is! Kudos to Ms Mitchell, who has spent years on the development of this retelling and blending of stories that most of us hadn't encountered since high school (if at all for many) - it works! Everyone on the stage is working at a minimum of 200% energy, and the net result is an unforgettable performance that will stick in your awareness for years to come - not just by the actors, but by the on-stage jazz combo that is every bit a part of the cast. EXPERIENCE THIS!
