GUY IN CONCERT:

New jack swing favorites Guy rode a string of R&B hits to fame in the late ‘80s, cementing their status as icons of the genre with their appearance in Mario Van Peebles aptly-titled 1991 film New Jack City. Boasting an impressive catalog of Top 5 R&B classics from their heyday, the group continues to dazzle at their live shows, often touring with other choice era acts like Al B. Sure and Tony! Toni! Tone! On the road again in 2014, Guy is sure to have plenty of booties in the aisles as they treat fans to electric renditions of funky hits like “My Fantasy” and crowd-favorite “I Like.”

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Formed in Harlem in 1987, Guy pioneered the burgeoning R&B subgenre new jack swing with their self-titled 1988 debut LP. The album went double platinum on the strength of three Top 5 R&B hits, raising the group’s profile and leading to writing gigs for a variety of artists including Bobby Brown and Boy George. 1990 sophomore LP The Future contained another string of hits, topping the R&B chart and landing the band a featured role in the 1991 gangster classic New Jack City. After a hiatus in the ‘90s, the band reunited for 2000’s Guy III, which contained their biggest pop hit to date with “Dancin’”. Back on tour in 2014, Guy will share the stage with a host of other legendary R&B acts that includes Salt-n-Pepa and El Debarge.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

“Guy was incredible, Aaron and Damian started the show with “I Like!” They snapped, Aaron Hall still has it, he came out his shirt, he pumped the floor on stage, he came out into the crowd and sang “I Miss You”… Finally Teddy Riley hit the stage, the crowd went wild.”

“Guy- great energy…Vocals were good. Showmanship great!”

“Guy was good, Aaron Hall is a character! It was so cool to hear Teddy Riley too!”

    New Jack Swing Jam

by pretty66 on 2/18/13UNO Lakefront Arena - New Orleans

The performers were fantastic! The venue, however, was NOT. We arrived there at 7:30, since the tickets stated 8:00 start time. We had to stand outside until about 8:15-8:20 before we were allowed in to find our seats. Apparently, a sound check was NOT completed because every performer sounded really muffled through the mic, but the music was TOO loud. At one point, Teddy Riley's mic was not even turned on. Also, it seemed that the show didn't flow too well - there were lots of breaks and the DJ didn't keep the crowd going in between acts. If this concert had been ANYWHERE else, it would have been MUCH better. I enjoyed the songs and the performers, though - just wish the sound quality would have been better.

I was so looking for to this event. Arrived on time but had to wait in line for over 1 1/2 hours for rehearsal time is ridiculous.

My husband really enjoyed this concert. A true throwback! Dancing in the aisles and singing all night. SWV and Guy did their thing.

I was upset that the program was scheduled for eight, yet we all had to stand outside in the cold til 9 o'clock, then wait an additional thirty minutes before the host came out. The music wasn't loud enough for most of the acts, and then the last act played songs that weren't recognizable and entirely too loud for us to even understand. I expected more for what I paid.

    Disappointing

by Queentoy on 2/17/13Arie Crown Theater - Chicago

I was disappointed overall with the concert. One of the singers of Dru Hill walked off the stage. One of their members was too out of shape to even stand longer than 10 minutes. Al B Sure was too out of shape to sing longer than 15 minutes and he didn't even sing mostly his own songs. He did a long tribute to Heavy D. SWV was okay. Tony Toni Tone was alright, but Raphael Sadiq wasn't there. Guy did okay but Teddy Riley didn't have much of a role.

by mrjones0043 on 2/16/13Arie Crown Theater - Chicago

Dru Hill threw down, SWV lived up to their name, Tony Toni Tone amazing (as expected) GUY was cool...which brings us to Mr. Al B. Sure (smdh) can you say hot damn mess? he was terrible, the only thing that saved him from being ran up out the Chi was the DJ's mini tribute to Heavy D (really dude) then had these two young cats on stage with him that didn't know the words to his song(s) clearly 25yrs or younger and didn't even introduce them...he says "...sorry but thats my time,I'llbe back too see you again real soon Chicago." I think I speak for everyone here by saying NO THANKS AL!!!!!

    Awesome old school jam session

by DTeam2 on 2/16/13Arie Crown Theater - Chicago

The experience was nice; the DJ created a party atmosphere in between acts which was great; there were some technical difficulties with the mics which they couldn't seem to get corrected but overall it was a fun time and nice to reminisce with some of our favorite groups

    SWV was GOOD!

by Teri1Grl on 2/16/13Arie Crown Theater - Chicago

DRU Hill sucked! Nokio walked off the stage during mid performance and from the beginning seemed he didn;t want to be there. JAZZ OMG!!!! sat down practically the whole time they were on stage and was breathing so hard in the mike!! and it sounded like they song their whole performace with a track. Al b sure SUCKED!!!!! Vocally HORRIBLE!! No stage prescence and they spent alot of time in the crowd so for about30min no one in the balcony could see anything..SWV was good but one of the members took her shoes off for the whole performace!!Aren't they professionals?? GHETTO! toni tone tony was OK.. I left after their second song because I just couldn't take it anymore!!!!!!! It was like watching my heros die!

    Next time I'll pass.

by JustJay7 on 2/16/13Arie Crown Theater - Chicago

Al B. Sure was garbage. He's pretty much been reduced to a hype man. SWV was forgettable. You get the feeling that two of them hate each other and the third just puts up with it. Tony! Toni! Tone! is now a good tribute band, since Raphael is no longer with them. Guy was the best. Not that I expected them to go on forever, given there were five groups, but man their set was short.

AL B Sure was not sure!

by Anonymous on 2/16/13Arie Crown Theater - Chicago

As a husband who loves his wife dearly, I was looking forward to going to the New Jack Swing Valentine Jam to reminisce about the time we fell in love and these artists where going to provide that platform. Let me start off by saying the transitions in between acts was some of the worse I've seen in years. Dru Hill, SWV, Tony Toni Tone, Guy performed well. I did expect their sets to be little longer. Al B Sure on the other-hand was one of the worse performances I've seen. He could barely be heard, did not sing well at all. He treated the concert like it was last minute decision to attend. The energy was horrible. I would recommend replacing him with an act that can actually sing. His set was also the shortest at about 15 minutes. I did not pay to see that. Would not recommend this tour.

    Dose of Nostalgia:New Jack Swing

by SexyChocoDiva on 2/16/13Arie Crown Theater - Chicago

Jazz, of Dru Hill was awesome;Al B. Sure, should have stuck to his music;Co-Co, of SWV voice has become phenomenal over the years;Raphael Saadiq's cousin, of Tony! Toni! Tone!,was a great replacement; and Aaron Hall,of Guy,needs to accept that he is no longer 27 years old. The DJ & Soto, made the night with the songs they played,it could have been better,if they would have done a better job of the sound system. When is BBD/ New Edition coming back?
