Guster in Concert

In their early years, veteran Boston alternative rockers Guster brought a scrappy, back-porch DIY feel to their shows by performing in a stripped-down setting with hand percussion, playing bass lines on a regular guitar. When they toured in support of albums like 1995's ‘Parachute' and 1997's ‘Goldfly,' this approach proved infectious, earning them as much of a following as their early singles like "Airport Song" and "Demons" had attracted. By the time they released the ‘Lost and Gone Forever' album in 1999, though, Guster had expanded their sound both stylistically and in terms of their instrumental arsenal. They retained their tuneful, hook-laden, pop-friendly feel, but their music became richer, and their shows reflected that evolution, with drum kit replacing the percussion, real bass guitar playing the bass lines, and a fuller vibe achieved overall. Current Guster concerts incorporate elements of that early approach, with drummer Brian Rosenworcel switching back and forth between drum kit and percussion. But the humor that's always been a part of the band's aesthetic hasn't receded, and Guster shows always have a feel-good atmosphere.

Guster Background

Guster was formed in 1991, when the original band members (Ryan Miller, Adam Gardner, and Brian Rosenworcel) were all attending Tufts University. Though their sound was based around concise, melodic, pop-friendly alt-rock tunes, Guster found a following with jam-band fans early on. They self-released their first two albums, 1995's ‘Parachute' and 1997's ‘Goldfly,' but after nabbing a deal with Sire Records in '98, ‘Goldfly' was reissued. ‘Lost and Gone,' released in 1999, was the album that changed things for the band. Overseen by legendary producer Steve Lilywhite (U2, Dave Matthews Band, Peter Gabriel), it expanded on the stripped-down, homemade sound of Guster's earlier recordings, and earned the band a whole new audience in the process. The hits "Barrel of a Gun" and "Fa Fa" emerged from the album. Subsequent releases were increasingly successful, and 2003's ‘Keep It Together' boasted the biggest hit of the band's career: "Amsterdam." It was around this time the band expanded to a foursome with the arrival of multi-instrumentalist Luke Reynolds, who was replaced in 2010 by Joe Pisapia. But for a band that's been refining its sound for as long as they have, Guster has managed to remain remarkably true to its initial impulses, consistently creating hook-heavy tunes full of forward momentum and breezy fun in equal amounts.

    Good show but …

by Mark on 4/2/24MGM Music Hall at Fenway - Boston

Great theatrical performance by Gunter. Bad sound by the music hall. Muddy. Too much bass. Unclear vocals. They are usually good. I don’t know where they went wrong. Fire the sound engineers

by Lmfsw16 on 4/2/24MGM Music Hall at Fenway - Boston

Guster is a fantastic band whose music had stood the test of time. Relaxed, chill, silly—the band is so friendly and real. Can’t help but have big smiles and fun energy when they play. Thank you Guster for the “We Also Have Eras” tour! Please do it again!! So fun to relive the music from our college days and hear some great new stuff too.

    Good for my soul

by uwleahsara on 4/2/24MGM Music Hall at Fenway - Boston

Great show all around. My first concert of the year and my first one at MGM/Fenway. Every seat at MGM is good, with clear views of the stage; the sound is great and i could feel the music! Merch and bathroom lines were a little out of control, but I appreciate that there was a lot of staff on hand to direct traffic. I have loved Guster for more than 20 years and they always put on an energetic, emotional, and hilarious show. Keep it up, boys!

    The Golden Era

by JNog on 4/2/24MGM Music Hall at Fenway - Boston

Guster's "We Also Have Eras Tour"was like no other Guster show before. Everything was simply magical, from the Thundergod hanging from the ceiling, to the many costume changes and the setlist that hit all the right spots! The only downside was the speakers at the venue blocked our view of all the content they projected on the back screen and said speakers were also pumping 115dB of sound directly into our faces since we were in the balcony (Used my Airpods for Adaptive Noise Canceling which worked great though). Other than that, the venue was great! Seats were comfortable generally, and drinks were priced as expected (too high), but I had a good view, I felt like the venue was secure and the show was great.

by Maggie on 4/2/24MGM Music Hall at Fenway - Boston

I've been going to Guster shows for decades now and they never disappoint! The guys are still able to hit vocally, they're funny and engaging, and they play the hits. What more could you want?

    So good.

by CentralMAya on 4/2/24MGM Music Hall at Fenway - Boston

Concert was excellent - so happy to hear this local-ish band return to Boston! View at MGM left a lot to be desired. MGM needs to state that seats are obstructed view.

    Great Show

by Bil on 4/2/24MGM Music Hall at Fenway - Boston

First time seeing Guster for me. I'm mostly a "Lost and Gone Forever"Guster fan with appreciation of the other big hits. I recognized 80% of the songs they played... and loved the ones I didn't know as well. Their showmanship was great... I always love when someone can laugh at themselves and clearly they have a great sense of humor. So glad I didn't miss this show and as always MGM Fenway is a great venue.

    Amazing/Magical show

by Kim G on 4/2/24MGM Music Hall at Fenway - Boston

Guster's "Eras"show at the MGM ranks as one of the best concerts I've ever seen. The show was clever, entertaining and I loved how they went through their history, album by album. The set list was perfect and I was super impressed with the venue as well (it was my first time there). I was concerned because I had floor seats, but I found that we weren't super packed in and there was room to roam around and stretch out. There were also no long lines at the bar or bathrooms. I will continue to see Guster every time they tour and can't wait to go back to MGM for another show!

    Amazing concert—venue not so amazing

by Sullycyn on 4/1/24Brooklyn Paramount - Brooklyn

Guster was phenomenal as always. New & old music, humor, fun—it’s all here! This venue, however, is NOT a favorite. They line people up early, only to create a last-minute parallel line that permits latecomers to enter (for GA) at same time as those who waited for hours. Once inside, the check-in process for tickets and bags is inconsistent and repetitive (why did they want to scan my tix repeatedly?). The merch line is in corner and goes up stairs (what if you’re impaired?). Plus side: bars everywhere. I would come here again for a top band like Guster, but otherwise I’ll avoid it.

    There is only one GUSTER!!!!

by RnR-Rich on 3/29/24Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre at the Count Basie Center - Red Bank

What a great show and super fun time. The band's humor, eclecticism, and musical prowess was on full tilt. I have seen this band several times, beginning in the early 90's and they continue to deliver on the harmonies and elegance of simplicity. When your only complaint at the end of a show is "Gee, I wish they had done this song or that song, is it really a complaint? (Although, c'mon guys Center of Attention, Fa8, or Either Way should always hit the set - at least for my shows :))
