About

Hall des Lumières is a permanent digital art center showcasing entirely new, custom-curated experiences based on the work of different world-renowned artists, starting with the debut exhibition, Gustav Klimt: Gold in Motion.

Shorter, complementary digital experiences will accompany Gustav Klimt: Gold in Motion. These will include an exhibition featuring works by Friedensreich Hundertwasser, an Austrian painter inspired by Klimt; a contemporary creation by the interdisciplinary studio Nohlab, titled 5 Movements, which will guide visitors to explore space and time through a performer's five different types of body movements; and a contemporary creation, Recording Entropia, exploring the vast possibilities of the human mind.

Hall des Lumières will be located at 49 Chambers Street, inside the elaborate former teller hall and vault level of the historic, landmarked Emigrant Industrial Savings Bank opposite Manhattan's City Hall Park. Go to halldeslumieres.com for more information.

    Couldn't enjoy it

by J on 9/20/22Hall des Lumières - New York

Really could not enjoy the whole experience. Someone stole my wife’s phone during the exhibition and we spent most of our time talking to staff and security trying to locate the phone since someone inside the venue had it and was turning off the sound on the find my phone app. By the time it all got resolved the show was basically over.

    Moving Experience

by J.H. on 9/19/22Hall des Lumières - New York

The whole Hold in Motion experience was phenomenal. Gustav Klimt’s masterpiece came to life under genius of computer technology, and symphonic lights and music!

I was disappointed and would not go again.

by Fancy Nancy on 9/19/22Hall des Lumières - New York

The venue is not the best, projecting images on the walls of an old bank with pillars and multiple teller windows? There is not place to sit except the hard marble floors, which become increasingly uncomfortable during the "presentation," especially for the older people (getting up off the floor can be comical, too. The "downstairs" was a disappointment, too. I went to BOTH of the Van Gogh immersive exhibits in NYC. Even though I thought the one at the Pier was also disappointing (and a waste of money), the one on Vesey Street (at the same time) was AMAZING! Truly outstanding, and no comparison -- SO much better -- than the Van Gogh at the "pier" or this recent Klimt exhibit.

    Van Gogh was better

by Vafl on 9/19/22Hall des Lumières - New York

Instead of having explanation of Klimt works at the end it should be as you enter. Also, as magnificent as bank building is all its architectural features are distracting. I was honestly bored. My cousin went downstairs and came back up to fetch us. The exhibit was much better seen once it was viewed in a blank room with unobtrusive features.

    left wanting more

by d. T. on 9/18/22Hall des Lumières - New York

lovely venue and knockout video immersion but comparing it to the other recent immersive experience - the Van Gogh show - this was very one-note. Van Gogh offered history, text, vignettes, etc in addition to the immersive show. Totally didn't understand the connection between the subsequent dance movement video to the Klimt event. Beautiful stuff in the gift shop but too pricey

    A dazzling golden experience

by Art lover on 9/18/22Hall des Lumières - New York

From the breathtaking interior space of the building where the shoe was held, to the mind blowing digital views of the artwork brought to life, it was a great experience. Such an innovative way to view artwork beyond a painting on a wall.

    1/3 Gustav. 2/3 everything else

    FAB-ULOUS!!!

by Orchid on 9/18/22Hall des Lumières - New York

The venue chosen was amazing- incredible architecture!!! All employees, from the point that we were in line were extremely pleasant and helpful. We had some issues with the tickets purchased on line, and they solved it properly. The show itself was out of this world and I highly recommended. The only suggestion I have is that not enough seating was available for the elderly (it was cordoned off), since the show was an hour long. Also, drinks or food should not be permitted in the venue (some younger people just left their cups on the floor). The availability of being able to visit the vault, also was incredible!

    Creative Use of Lighting Techniques

by Jann on 9/18/22Hall des Lumières - New York

Highlighting the interior of the site, Emigrant Bank was nicely done. I wished there had been more Klimt.

    A Golden Experience

by Alan on 9/17/22Hall des Lumières - New York

My wife and I attended the very first show of Gold in Motion. It was also the opening of the Hall des Lumiere's after a 3 year restoration of the 1907 Emigrant Savings Bank. This was a deeply moving retrospective of Gustav Klimt's many different periods of work. It was much more sophisticated than the Van Gogh show. The music and sound system we're extraordinary and the lighting and digital presentations were far advanced from the first attempts in the Van Gogh shows. There were displays downstairs in the amazing building but we were told incorrectly that there was no elevator service and I had an injury which precluded my climbing the many stairs to the other displays, the only glitch in an otherwise flawless afternoon. I would go again. Yes, that good

Got to see this on the first day. Show is an hour long but you can stay as long as you like. Enjoyed the entire thing. Highly recommend.
