About

Hall des Lumières is a permanent digital art center showcasing entirely new, custom-curated experiences based on the work of different world-renowned artists, starting with the debut exhibition, Gustav Klimt: Gold in Motion.

Shorter, complementary digital experiences will accompany Gustav Klimt: Gold in Motion. These will include an exhibition featuring works by Friedensreich Hundertwasser, an Austrian painter inspired by Klimt; a contemporary creation by the interdisciplinary studio Nohlab, titled 5 Movements, which will guide visitors to explore space and time through a performer's five different types of body movements; and a contemporary creation, Recording Entropia, exploring the vast possibilities of the human mind.

Hall des Lumières will be located at 49 Chambers Street, inside the elaborate former teller hall and vault level of the historic, landmarked Emigrant Industrial Savings Bank opposite Manhattan's City Hall Park. Go to halldeslumieres.com for more information.

    No Seating / Overall Disappointing

by Christine on 9/21/22Hall des Lumières - New York

Venue does not have seating for elderly people or people with physical disabilities and does not disclose this anywhere on website or ticket. Show is also very small compared to Van Gogh exhibit. I was expecting something similar. The show was also very loud with kids running around and playing which really detracted from the overall experience. The Van Gogh show didn't have any of that background noise. Overall very disappointing.

    Magical

by Gindin Art on 9/21/22Hall des Lumières - New York

The presentation was totally magical. Loved the music as much as the imagery. The Klimt show is only 30 min, which I thought was short for the price of the ticket. Still a wonderful experience and would encourage others to see it.

    Had higher expectations

by Marisabelle on 9/21/22Hall des Lumières - New York

There were too many people and no places to sit at all. Somehow comparing to Van Gogh experience this seemed to be a smaller venue and people were standing like fish in a can.

    Disappointed

by Janaconda on 9/21/22Hall des Lumières - New York

My wife and I attended in the late afternoon Sunday 9/18. We were both disappointed with the presentation as you needed to either stand or sit on the floor. A good number of people stood in front of others and dozens could not see the main presentation on the largest wall. Security people did nothing to correct this problem - if fact they were pretty useless! Bathrooms were inadequate for the amount of people in attendance! Basically we did not enjoy the presentation. We had seen the Van Gogh similar show last summer and it was far superior. The amount of money we spent on tickets was not worth what we got in return. Souvenir was very over priced!

    Good display, poor value

by Katherine on 9/21/22Hall des Lumières - New York

The ticket is too expensive for just a large projector. The projection of Klimt’s work is impressive though

    Gold gold and more gold!

by SUSANNYC on 9/21/22Hall des Lumières - New York

The bank venue is lovely, very historic and well restored. I loved the Klimt, Schiele and Hundertwasser segments, really beautiful and the cascading effects were lovely. Music was fantastic, especially the opera. I didn't see the need for the Contemporaries segment, would have preferred more Klimt and Vienna. Unlike the Van Gogh immersive show at the WFC, the main viewing room is on the smaller side and not carpeted so you have the option of standing/sitting on a cold marble floor for an hour or sitting on creaky built-in benches with obstructed views. You can opt for better viewing in the large basement area, but it will not have the same striking color and impact as upstairs. I didn't do the vault video because it was about 90 degrees in there but the historic exhibition right near it was interesting. All in all, I was very entertained (stayed through two loops) and might return again during the week when it's less crowded.

    Gustav Klimt: Gold in Motion

by dale on 9/21/22Hall des Lumières - New York

The exhibit was beautiful, as was the space. However, after seeing the Van Gogh exhibit several months prior, it was very redundant. Unfortunately, this type of presentation loses its appeal once you have seen something similar.

    Beautiful

by Dawn424 on 9/21/22Hall des Lumières - New York

My son and I went to view the exhibition. It was beautiful. One of the nicest Art experiences I’ve witnessed so far. Very creative, loved the sound effects and music. It put it all together. The only very little disturbance was the sound of the door, opening and closing during the front viewing. If it could be replaced with a curtain. . . Less noise.

    A breathtaking visual extravaganza

What an extraordinary way to appreciate a great artist. We were awe-struck as the stunning images surrounded us, amid soul-stirring music.

    Not Impressed

by TTW on 9/20/22Hall des Lumières - New York

Given the prive of a ticket, I wasn't impressed. As a fan of most arts, this was not an experience that made much sense. The exhibit was disjointed and left me confused about I just witnessed. It was similar to a slideshow curated by someone with no real vision. The hall itself was beautiful.

    Gustav Klimt

by P on 9/20/22Hall des Lumières - New York

I liked the set up but overall the experience was disappointing. I wouldn’t buy tickets again. I was expecting more surprising visual effects and more sync with sound/music. The whole experience was pretty dull. I was expecting to be “wowed” more.

    Gustav - Gold in Motion!

by Kaz on 9/20/22Hall des Lumières - New York

Spectacular! It a long exhibit, but definitely worth staying to experience it again! Stay. Enjoy. Let the images and music wash over you. You will feel lighter and freer upon leaving!

Good but not as good as the Van Gogh exhibition

by Liz on 9/20/22Hall des Lumières - New York

The explanation of what was going on was in a corner in the basement. Move it up to where you can see it as you go in. Put benches around the walls and more seats in the middle. Not all of us can sit on the floor. A few of the scenes could make you dizzy.

    Kinda Trippy

by Mindy on 9/20/22Hall des Lumières - New York

Super cool experience but wish everyone had to sit on the floor (no chairs allowed). I think It would be more submersive.

    Klimt review

by Contessa on 9/20/22Hall des Lumières - New York

Overall it was amazing like Van Gogh. The space felt smaller and the gift shop could’ve had more options.

    Fun time for reasonable price

by AgingHipster on 9/20/22Hall des Lumières - New York

We attended on a Saturday morning. Pluses: beautiful music, large room, well thought out animations, and bonus exhibits too! Minuses: perhaps there should be a minimum age as many toddlers were bored to screams which detracts from the experience - we notably left ours with Grandma. The selfie room was a cute extra.

    Beautiful

by MCS on 9/20/22Hall des Lumières - New York

So much to see, beautiful music. It was a really wonderful experience. I do think there might be some way to keep children from running around. I have six grandchildren so I’m aware that it’s hard to keep kids quiet and still. But I went on Saturday morning and there were a lot of children running around in front of the screen even touching the main screen sometimes. Parents probably think they are exposing their children to culture, but this was really not appropriate. Many people around us seem to agree with this.

    We loved it!

We loved everything about this beautiful immersive exhibit. Well crafted and it made you feel like you were getting a massage.

    Lame

by TicketName on 9/20/22Hall des Lumières - New York

Went on suggestion of a friend. It is not worth it at all. Just a bunch of projections onto the walls, big deal. Much more impressive seeing actual art or walls painted. Not worth going to see this, i can do this on a large screen TV at home without spending $35
