Greensky Bluegrass on Tour
It might not be out of line to call Greensky Bluegrass the Grateful Dead of the progressive bluegrass scene. Like the Dead, they combine several strands of American musical tradition into a sound that's best experienced in concert and leaves plenty of room for jamming, and, true to form, their live recordings are as enthusiastically received as their studio albums. In fact, members of the Dead have collaborated with Greensky at various points. And while their repertoire contains powerful original material, Greensky have also become known for transforming popular tunes from disparate genres into something all their own. Amid a batch of their own tunes, in concert they might tackle The Allman Brothers Band's "Ain't Wastin' Time No More," Prince's "1999" or Tears for Fears' "Everybody Wants to Rule the World." But whatever enters their set, and no matter the source, it ends up definitively Greensky.
Greensky Bluegrass in Concert
Kalamazoo, Michigan, is the birthplace of one of the most unique bands in progressive bluegrass. It was in 2009 that banjo player Michael Bont, mandolinist Paul Hoffman and guitarist Dave Bruzza formed the first incarnation of Greensky Bluegrass in Kalamazoo. By the time they released their debut album, Less Than Supper, in 2004, dobro man Al Bates and bass player Chris Carr had come aboard as well. Personnel changes have occurred since then, and while the original trio remains at the core of Greensky Bluegrass, they were eventually joined by bassist Mike Devol and dobro player Anders Beck in a lineup that has developed a musical language all its own. Naturally, that language draws most strongly from Greensky's bluegrass roots, but it also incorporates elements of rock, folk, jazz and more. Not only has the band long been a mainstay of the biggest bluegrass festivals, their knack for improvisational excursions has also earned them a place of honor on the jamband circuit. But then, Greensky's ability to engage a multitude of audiences has always been at the heart of the band's appeal. Previously, Greensky Bluegrass has sold out venues to capacity, like Tabernacle and House of Blues.

When I found out GSBG was playing their hometown for New Years, I told the wife We're going. We had such a great time both nights, but NYE was pretty special! 3 awesome sets, the guys decked out in tux's, the balloon drop, confetti, and don't forget Holly Bowling killing it on the piano. I would make the 800 mile trip from Va. every NYE to party with the boys!!
I highly recommend seeing 6reensky Bluegrass if given the opportunity. Holly adds so much to the sound.
Loved the show, the sound, the lights, only issue was the vocals seemed muted or muffled. I've seen them before live a handful of times but this time the sound for the vocals was off. Not the singing of the musicians but the amplification of their voices. Microphone or speaker issue? Otherwise love these guys.
Great light show. Great individual instrumentals. First half consisted of jamming. Didn't recognize any songs. Wasn't up for another set.
The Bellwether is my new favorite venue in LA. BOTH bands knocked it out of the park. Three thumbs up.
It was a great show, but sound was not clear. It was quite difficult to get the words! A good mixing would have helped.
The venue was amazing and so was GSBG. They nailed it. First time to hear The Stringdusters and we were blown away, can’t believe we’ve never seen them before.
Lovely venue, great food, drinks and staffers! Great bands!!
One of the greatest shows I've ever attended! Don't miss it.
The Stringdusters were great. GreenSky Bluegrass was good, but I’m not interested in a live guitar solo, a dobro solo, a mandolin solo, and an organ / piano solo literally every other song. It reminded me too much of a Greatful Dead show.
My wife and I love Greensky Bluegrass and the Fox was a fantastic place to see them perform. They're such amazing musicians and played some of the classic tunes we were hoping to hear. It was unfortunate they turned almost every song into a 10+ minute self-absorbed session of solos and jamming rather than playing the studio tracks everyone knows and loves. Leap Year went on for something like 23 minutes, it was a little ridiculous to be honest... Holly Bowling is an incredible pianist and she really showcased her skills on the keys, but she kind of detracted from Greensky with her addition to the tour. Will definitely go see these guys again when they come to the Bay Area, even with their jamming and solo sessions they were still fun to see.
One of the tightest bands you’ll ever get a chance to see!
Avondale Brewery is a beautiful place, great venue. We enjoyed the facility and the availability of refreshments. Greensky Bluegrass is an amazing group and worth every second, penny, or whatever you need to compare it to. Go spend all your money to get tickets and see them. My group will definitely be getting in more Greensky shows. Thanks Greensky Bluegrass for an awesome Friday night in Birmingham AL!
First time seeing Greensky Bluegrass, and they did not disappoint! Great show!
The outdoor venue is very sweet. The music wonderful. How ever we had not seen the instructions on the Live website describing what could be taken into concert. Ended up losing some beverages.
Had never seen GSBG and they are amazing musicians with such talent that never tired as the night went on. The opener, the Wood Brothers were just as entertaining and both bands possess a stunning stage presence and write relatable lyrics. Marymoor park is one of the best settings to see a concert in the PNW!
What a great night of Bluegrass! and a beautiful venue!!!
Greensky put on one hell of a show - hoping it wont be as long in between for them to be here again.
What an excellent venue! Thoroughly impressed with the ROSE. Excellent sound, seating, space concession, bathrooms. Of course Greensky jams as always.
